    Re: 2008-09 Recruits

After seeing our shooting statistics after the last couple of games, maybe Krogman would be as big a need for our team as a big man. We have no threat from the outside to go along with a weak inside game, not a good combination. Never thought I'd say it, but we really miss having Heien on the team this year, he put up alot of quick points in games last year. We need a sharpshooter to keep defenses honest. Maybe Yackley or another guy can step up and be that type of player, but it is another piece that we are missing.

Obviously Louie has some range, maybe he could fill that void....

Sharpshooting is easier when you dont have defense all over you and that is what the Jacks ran into last night. Almost every three attempted was with a deep hand in the face.

I think the Jacks have the shooters, they're just not getting many good, open looks at the basket. They're just not moving without the ball the way they need to to get open. Young players tend to stand and watch. They need to move constantly, set picks for their teammates, and work hard to get open on offense. That's just not happening consistently yet, IMHO.

Does anybody know anything about an 08 commitment from Colorado? I read that over on Terry's blog, and I was wondering if anybody had info like height, position, etc. Depending on his position, it will probably have a pretty big impact on other positions recruitment.

Now on Louie, I will say Cadsev07 that you do help alot of kids with getting a chance to play college ball whether or not they play with you however, I do know that you also will have it out for some kids, and you have a thing against kids who turn it down after playing. some kids deserve it, you started club ball in sd but you have allowed other programs to suceed you. I've talked to louie and other players and they say it just isn't what it once was to play on your team it use to be an honor now its more like a black eye. and not even the best team anymore. I know that your program offers it to kids and some of them turn it down and it is still a great summer club team.

Now on other matters, I think SDSU is perfect for Louie, and I do believe that Louie will go there, great shooter and has that attitude you want in a player.
I however think that if there is a scholarship available i think that Keith Cutler from Platte should be considered he is a sophomore not as tall as the sophomores from Madison but a better shooter and as strong if not a stronger player. Also one of the smartest players I have ever seen play. I have heard that he is a great baseball player and would rather play that in college if that chance arose.
I've heard that Matt Malloy is considering SDSU for baseball if that happens state should really try to get him to play basketball, he is one of the quickest kids i have ever seen on the floor also great basketball iq. I know that playing 2 sports at the d-1 level is tuff but i believe he can do it.

I have not seen either of these two play. Cutler dad was baseball player at state. It would be impossible to play baseball and basketball at the same time. Basketball ends in March, baseball begins in January.

                Re: 2008-09 Recruits

Ya I guess that does make sence I didn't realize that there was that big of an overlap, I heard Malloy has signed at DWU though, great sign for them for whatever sport he decides to play. I havn't heard about this recruit from Colorado but there must be decent size there considering Black Hills State has signed another 6-9 kid from there. They have 2 6-9 freshman from colorado this year, and that is a NAIA school so you would think that maybe Colorado has some D-1 size. Just a possible recruiting market for the future.

On the JUCO list its a tough choice. Do you take that scholarship and give it to a high schooler that from day 1 will learn your style. Or take a JUCO kid that only has 1 or 2 years of elgibility and has been coached in a different system for the past 2 years.

If you look at this year I see 2 freshman that its kind of hard to believe that SDSU was there best option in Callahan and Williams. I also see a JUCO kid in Frias that has played really well. The ? you have to ask yourself with a JUCO kid is, is there tallent good enough now to help the team enough to in sence morgage the future because you will only have the kid for 2 years, and have to deal with alonger transition period. I do however believe if SDSU is going to get a 7-0 it will be the JUCO route because honestly 7-0ers with D-1 tallent out of high school don't go to a college in which they call the arena they play in "Frost Arena" to play basketball. I understand if they do it to level out the scholarship's also. In Nagy I trust

                  Re: 2008-09 Recruits

                  Don't need a 7-footer.

Need an aggressive 6'8" or 6"9 post player with a big strong body, who won't let himself be pushed out of the lane. Taller is better, but 6'8" or 6'9" would do. (Even someone like Berte, who's a bit spindly but knows how to go get a rebound).

Loney is a natural strong forward in the D-I game. Bassett will be a pretty solid, if slightly undersized, D-I strong forward in the years to come. If Nagy can somehow turn over a rock and find a true D-I-caliber center, I think that with the rest of the young talent on this team, SDSU will not be an easy team for most college basketball programs to deal with.

Louie Krogman is a great HS player in White River, SD. He has done a lot and will be a nice player on the college level for some program. That program is probably not SDSU, at least as a scholarship player. Maybe he will prove people wrong. At this point of his career, he does not look like a DI player. How can you tell that? Who has offered him a scholarship? Not a letter, but an actual scholarship offer. Who is offereing official visits? Who is putting their money on him at the DI level? That is how you can judge where college coaches think you fit in. That does not make you less of a HS player, just not a good fit for a certain program.

The two Madison kids are going to be playing in SF for the Dakota Schoolers Border showdown tourny this weekend. Also Jake Steffan will be playing in it.

IMO, quality JUCO's will be harder to get now that we are DI. A lot of the quality JUCO players we got in the past were DI quality, but they didn't have the academics to make it in DI, so DII was their best option. We were one of the best schools to play DII ball at, so we got the cream of the crop. Now we are at the bottom of the pile with most quality JUCO players going to schools like K-State and Louisville. I would prefer to go the route of signing high school players. For the short term, to level out scholarships, a JUCO or 2 would be okay though.

Maybe they will, maybe they won't. Remember though, NDSU got Andre Smith as a JUCO, and he had some high major offers and still choose to play at NDSU. Mo wasn't a bad get either, he did exactly what was expected of him... provide rebounding and defense. I'll leave it to the coaching staff to decide on whether a JUCO is worth it or not. I doubt that they are going to throw away a scholarship on a JUCO player that won't pan out this season though, since we have more prospects than scholies.

I also think you'll see better JUCO's signing with us now that we are in conference. Remember, this will be the first year that we can sign guys to play for the tournament during their senior year.

I got a chance to see the Roosevelt/Yankton game last Friday in Sioux Falls. Nagy was there along with his father and former assistant Wilbur. I'm sure his primary reason for being there was 6'8 Colton Iverson of Yankton. He runs the floor very well and not surprisingly is a good shot blocker against players much smaller than him. For some reason his teamates didn't show much confidence in him as they proceeded to launch long jump shots all night rather than get the ball into the large post player. Granted Roosevelt really packed the middle and forced Yankton to shoot from outside rather than get it into Iverson. Roosevelt ended up winning in overtime. I also believe Iverson and his father were at the Jacks game on Saturday. Cadsev has commented on the three freshman at Roosevelt, Larson, Aluong and Bartling. I think all three of these players have a chance to play at the next level. The one I think the Jacks are already coveting is Adol Aluong. This 6'0 point guard was recently moved up to the Varsity and is getting more minutes every game. The thing I was impressed with was his poise in the crunch time. He played the last few minutes in regulation making a big 3 and all of the overtime. He has a long body (will probably grow more) and is very quick. I suspect the Jacks will make a big push for Aluong along with Larson and maybe Bartling if they all continue to develop. If anyone doubts it's time for a shot clock and 18 minute halves in South Dakota you should have been at this game. I sat next to a long time coach watching the game and he commented what a boring game and IMHO felt it's time to make changes.

When I spoke to Coach Iverson at the Mt Marty game he mentioned the Nagy had been in contact. He has 2 daughters currently playing college ball, one for him at the Mount at one at USD. Really a very nice family. I'll leave the recruiting to the Coaches.

As for the pace of all the Yankton games, its painful really.

I was referring more to the pace the Roosevelt team plays. Thankfully they were behind most of the game and they were forced to put some shots up. When they finally got a lead early in overtime I thought they were going to stall the entire 4 minutes. Something has to be done!
