    I like this part.

“To assume the University of North Dakota and the State Board of Higher Education may ignore a law ... sets a bad precedent and demonstrates a lack of regard for the legislative process and the policymaking branch of government.”

Aren't they just following example from Washington D.C.?

The Spirit Lake tribe is starting a new lawsuit -- they want the name retained.

Oh, for pity's sake . . . let me get this straight . . . it violates the tribe's "Native American civil rights, equal protection rights and religious rights" for the University of North Dakota to NOT use the nickname "Sioux" to refer to their intercollegiate athletic teams.

          Wait, what?

Just when you thought this farce couldn't get more absurd . . .

The term "barratry" comes to mind . . .

We learn new words daily. Filbert just shared one. Here is the Wikipedia link:

It goes to show that this site is more than for SDSU fans.

Today (Tuesday, 11/08/11) the ND legislature is addressing the UND name issue. Here's the latest from the Grand Forks newspaper.
              http://www.grandforksherald.com/even...cle/id/220664/

Some legislators are considering a moratorium or cooling-off period before UND can take on a new name. I think that's just plain wrong for a legislature to get involved in what now becomes (assuming the law forcing retention of the name is repealed), at its heart, a marketing issue. In any event, I think the legislature, perhaps with good intention, unwitingly continues to inflict damage or at least lay the foundation for damage for UND.

I don't even read this stuff and haven't for quite a while. From an outsider's perspective, this is completely embarrassing for UND. They need to get their act together. I hope the Big Sky kicks them out.

I hope the NCAA kicks them out. The NCAA is a member organization and doesn't need to deal with this. Also, they still are going through D-I transition - what's to stop the NCAA from keeping them out of the D-I ranks by not approving their D-I status?

It appears the ND Legislature will be voting on a three year moratorium on picking a new name: http://www.kfgo.com/fm-headline-news.php?ID=0000005911

Next up, the ND solons will consider a bill requiring corn production on non-irrigated land in North Dakota to yield at least 270 bushels per acre. And, the best legislation of all: a new bill requiring all ND children to be good looking.

A significant proportion of legislatures are politicians. Posture can be seen as wisdom.

Surely you jest. I almost fell for the corn production mention, but the other one gave it away.

I once worked for a Tribal entity and when we were adding an addition to a Casino Hotel, our controller made it very clear in the beginning. He said "YOU make the decisions and for GOD's sake, do not give them (tribal council) ANY say in carpet patterns, or colors or any of that. That's what we pay YOU and the Interior Designer for."

                                He was 100% right.

I can't imagine offerring the ND Legislature ANY say in the nickname process (other than the 5-7 years of their lives that they have already wasted on it). Is there any chance this issue ever goes away? I vaguely remember a little hand wringing when we changed our logo - but these people are idiotic and never cease to amaze me.
