Perhaps, but there's still likely a twist or two ahead before it's completely over.

My feeling is that the state legislature should add a new hockey and basketball arena to that bill (from their oil money) so that they can FINALLY tell the Engelstad people to go pound sand.

The Englestad experiment should be a lesson to both USD and SDSU foundations, about major donors and their influence in operations. Perheps we should be more skeptical of Fred Sanford and son aka Dennis Sanford and his gifts.

Not the money that is evil, it is the strings attached to the money. UND administrators and alumni knew fully the strings attached to the Englestad monies and chose to accept. I would like to think SDSU's administration would make a wiser choice.

Just watch: I think there will be more than a few ND legislators who will give the NCAA the middle finger by voting against the repeal legislation the Governor will propose in November (but the law will be repealed...too much to lose including the Big Sky Conference affiliation).

This fight was over when the lawsuit was settled a while back. I wonder what would have happened if the lawsuit was allowed to go all the way through the court system.

Yes I think the SDSU Foundation adminstrators and in fact they do.d. I recall Dave Marquart, who was suceeded by Steve Esperbach, told me of an generous gift offered to off-set the liberal teachings of the political science department. In the mind of this donor, he thought the department needed to be fair and balanced like Foxs news. This gift was turned down, because it would be messing with academic freedom and a bunch of other issues.

Right now the Montsano representation by President Chicone being on their board seems to still bother some. But I believe Montsona owns DeKalb seed corn and bunch of other providers of crop seeds so I would think they have a big vested interest in the research in the plant science department. The Montsono name seems to conjure up preceptions of pesticides and what not but it might not be a complete view of the company

Englestad among other things hosted a Adolf Hitler birthday party just before his big gift to UND. So yes they realized what kind of guy he was and how strongly he felt about the logo. Since the REA is still in the Ralph Englestad estate, it is a problem, but again the evil revenue supports the athletic department so they are not about to let go of that.

I guess most everyone on this board who donates does so without personal selfish motives in giving donations. No, Money is not evil, but how it is used can be very evil.

North Dakota Board of Higher Education has voted to retire the nickname at the end of the year.... Wouldn't it be funny if UND decides to call itself the "Calvary" just to pi$$ off the activists? LOL

It's been that kind of day today.

So I suppose if fighting sioux is to much, I guess blood thirsty savages is out then. I kid I kid.

Maybe they should just change to the fighting Sue and a picture of a mean lady with a rolling pin about to smack someone. But then your womens groups would all get their panties in a bunch.

What is interesting in this article is that Earl Striden claims the former NCAA head Brands misread a browbeating on former President Kupacella by none other than the late famous RICH NORWEGIAN, Ralph Engelstad. Not mentioned in the article is the Hitler birthday parties for UND big wigs nor the funding to remove an immigrant Lutheran Church near where Englestad grew up board by board and sending it back to Norway to be included in an emigration museum. Ralph can be summed up as the Good, the bad and the ugly.

A friend from UND sent me this link today. Spirit Lake tribal members were apparently not allowed to visit with the NCAA.

I really do not think it would have mattered whether Spirit Lake had been invited or not. Their presence at the meeting would have changed nothing in the agreement that was reached in they court system. This agreement called for approval from the two reservations that were of Lakota orgins. UND failed to meet the requirements of this agreement and therefore the logo must now go. This has nothing to do with discrimination and for the Plains Daily imply it does only makes the sting of defeat linger on in those minds who feel the logo is sacred to UND. Its not and the skinny white haired guy Earl Stringen has sung. Its time to move on.

The weirdest part of that deal is that the chief contacted the NCAA and asked to be included.

I'm thinking that the NCAA would have had no objection to the tribal chief being part of the ND delegation.

So I'm wondering why this guy didn't ask Carlson et al. to be included, or if he did and was rebuffed.

At any rate, it's over and done with.

My modest proposal is that UND auction off their nickname on a periodic basis. Let it by the UND "Rydell Ford Dealerships" for a couple years, etc.

I thought the carwreck was over, but, no! The car has once again lurched from one ditch and is crossing the road to the other ditch: Al Carlson, the State Senator who championed the legislation to keep the name, wrote a letter on Thursday to the State Board of Higher Ed and UND, telling them they should not be disregarding the law. Here's the story LINK.

Carlson's basic point (essentially: until the legislation is repealed, it's still the law so how can SBOHE and UND ignore it?) is probably correct. But, sheesh, what a mess.

I think Al Carlson is driving that car and the steering wheel has come off in his hands and no one knows where this wreck will end up.
