Seems as though ND's majority leader wants to have a heart-to-heart with the NCAA... Only problem is the NCAA doesn't want to meet.

Is it just me or is this guy beating a dead horse? And will the ND legislature sue the Big Sky when they kick out UND over ths matter?
Al Carlson has all but declared himself for the US House or Represenative Seat in ND. This bill could cost him votes and he is really in a CYA mode right now. This might explain his strange behaviour.

Article in AL today not much new, except it's a nice summary how this Carlson guy really f@*$ed up and is delusional. Doesn't he know the NCAA is more powerful than the entire state of North Dakota? This "controversy" continues to amuse me.

President Kelly of UND was on the News and Views show, KFGO 790 AM, and told host Joel Heitkamp, that the Sioux Logo had to go. He was asked this by the host and he replied "yes".

I looked at the Grand Forks Herald and the article did not appear, but did not look too closely. Funny part is both papers are owned by same people.

Big Sky Commissioner Fullerton wrote a letter ( see: http://legacy.grandforksherald.com/p...rSchneider.pdf ) ND State Representative Mac Schneider (if my scorecard is accurate, I believe he's a Dem., out of Grand Forks, former UND football player, has come out in favor of changing the Fighting Sioux nickname based because the university has to move forward after the NCAA settlement etc.).

I think that letter is clear. Some UND-nickname supporters will have to claim they cannot read if they persist in positions they advocate.

The Fargo Forum had an editorial praising President Kelly for his stance, it more or less recaps all that has went on in the past few weeks.
Yes Max Schnider is a Dem out of GF and a former all NCC player. Some of you guys on the board should remember him and playing against him.

I made a similar post on Bisonville:

I saw a question on another message board -- "What would happen if the law was repealed and the repeal was referred to the voters?"

Can a repeal be referred? Or, would voters have to initiate a replacement law? [It may not be possible to refer a repeal of a law. If the legislature passes a law and then decides to repeal its law, voters who are in favor of the law may have to try to get the law adopted again by using initiative. I recall looking at a different but somewhat related concept: can an elected body (city council; state legislature) repeal a law that was adopted through initiative?]

In any event, a few people, with a fistful of petitions, could delay this matter further -- not sure how ND law would handle that: would the vote come up in the next general election in November? It sounds like it could be easy to round up the signatures necessary to put the repeal to a vote or initiate a new measure. The petition signers would be a bizarre coalition of people ranging from those who are adament the name be changed to those are sign the petitions just to further the pain up North.

I'm not saying any Bison fans would be so devious...

TV weighed in this morning on whether SDSU will play UND again. I thought Justin Sells gave the proper and complete response to TV's weighty question.

On the eve of the meeting with the NCAA, some UND Native American students filed a new lawsuit against North Dakota, challenging the legislation which mandates retention of the name.

The plaintiffs are not members of either of the North Dakota tribes (Standing Rock; Spirit Lake).

Thanks for posting the Bismarck newpaper article its more complete and clearly states their case against North Dakota. I did notice one member was a member of Sisseton-Wapheton tribe which is in the SE corner of ND/NE corner of South Dakota. Also one plantiff belong to Cheyenne Agency which I believe is Lakota. I think where they are members and what tribe does not matter. The useage is offensive in their eyes and they have decided to do something about it.

A few nickname supporters on UND's fan message board have tipped over.

I wonder when the UND / NCAA meeting is scheduled ... I know it's today in Indianapolis. There should be a statement issued by the NCAA at the end of the day.

No change and the governor now indicates he'll get legislature to act and chance because not doing so would be too costly.
