No, because the only winter activities for Flickertail fans is UND Hockey and ice fishing. This brings them a third thing to talk about.

Frankly I am glad the one tribe and a few others are suing the ncaa. I think und should adopt the tribe name as part of its school name the one that supports it. That way they keep it. That way the one tribe is happy its named after them and third the ncaa can't do anything if the only tribe supports it. Something like the spirit fighting sioux.

I think this post illustrates the ignorance surrounding this issue. How can the three bands on the Spirit Lake Reservation speak for the entire tribe? Use of the Sioux name affects Lakota and Dakota peoples in six states and two Canadian provinces. That without even accounting for the Assiniboine peoples.

If the ND legislature wants to move UND to Ft. Totten and hand over administration of the university to the Sisseton, Wahpeton and Upper Yantonai bands then they would have a clear path to use of Fighting Spirit Lake Reservation Sioux Peoples and that would be about it.

So, now the Sioux are going to SUE the NCAA. Let's let them be known forever as the Fighting Sioux, who love to fight n' sue.

I guess I didn't know they said "Home of the Sioux" at the end of national anthems. SO then I guess it's not just NDSU fans that are jack@$$es. It is North Dakotans as a whole.

I believe this is where the NDSU fans got it from.

And the nuttiness continues in North Dakota. Now a Constitutional Amendment is being discussed by some (one has to hope for UND's sake that those discussing are not serious or a very small group):

My gut feeling is that this amendment will have legs. Politically ND, is similar to SD in political make up. The GOP controls both houses and the governorship. Voting for this amendent is a safe politically but unsafe if you take a stand in opposition. After all this logo and name is more important than membership in the Big Sky. To h*ll with the sanctions from the NCAA.

Change the name to put in little print spirit lake fighting sioux then every one is happy and the sioux who support the name will have it and it doesn't associate with other tribes then. Und spirit lake fighting sioux.

Seems to me that SDSU should sue that tribe to make them change the colors in their logo. That would make just about as much sense as what's been going on in ND . . .

At the same time, who gives the NCAA authority to decide who gets offended and by what? My family has a lot of irish in it yet the fighting Irish are not offensive? Heck their mascot looks like a drunking angry midget, but the call it a leprechaun. But Irish are not a special class so I guess its different. How politically correct or incorrect will this country get to before it says enough is enough.

Well no one forced the Irish from their homes and moved them to land no one wanted calling it a Reservation. IMHO the Native Americans may be the only special class left and perhaps if a portion of them don't want to be a team mascot we should honor their wishes.

Amen, and Goon, did you just come out from a rock somewhere? I thought you had more insight than that expressed in your last post. BTW, all Norwegian not even a Dane in my family tree and I dont find the use of Vikings offensive either, except when they are called viqueens by some on this board Now that one really gets me worked up.

The sad part is the word Sioux is a French word that is not complimentary to the Lakota. That alone would be reason not to use it. Forget the nuts at UND that started using it in the 1930's, they have no concept of tradition.

I agree with others that the comparison to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish is not an accurate comparison. I'm three-fourths Irish except on St. Patrick's day when I add another fifth, preferably Jameson.
