Here's the latest development in the state-sanctioned lunacy up north: The ND legislature has now hired a lawyer so that it may intervene in the lawsuit pending with the ND Supreme Court. (That seems to makes sense if one considers procedural issues only and making sure all the right parties are appearing in the action.)

There's been a story in circulation in which the U of Iowa pulled back its invitation to UND for a track meet in April based on the resumption of the use of the Fighting Sioux name and logo. That story is now being reported in the press. http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story...ickname-022712

This info was all from Siouxsports.com:

The softball team also lost a series with Wisconsin and Wisconsin also backed out of a 4 yr deal to play UND in hockey. Also, add in that Iowa decided not to play UND in women's hoops in which they had a home and home planned.

              This is ugly.

Browsing their forum, it seems like the majority of Sioux fans wish they could keep the nickname, but understand that they need to change it for the benefit of the university. That is a position I can respect.

But the few that are completely against changing the nickname come across as complete lunatics. Yikes.

I can't imagine trying to recruit for any sport in this environment.

I haven't been following the situation very closely, but from my limited understanding somebody in ND needs to grow a pair and start standing up for common sense.

I think everyone is getting on board now and may save the day. There are going to be many who continue to insist on the Fighting Sioux nickname or nothing but even the hockey coach has publicly said the old name has to go for the benefit of the university and its athletics department. The wildcard remains: petitioners have placed the issue on the ballot so the voters likely will have the final say (there's also an action pending before the ND Supreme Court which has the potential to kill the issue). Most probably have not thought deeply about it and those who know the harm that will be caused to UND if the name remains have to make sure their message gets out. It will continue to be an interesting issue up to the day of the vote.

I think the combination near-death experience and Come-To-Jesus moment has--perhaps--arrived at last for the UND community.

For the administration or the fanatics? And what do you base that on? (I'm just curious - because to anyone with ANY objectivity - should have had that experience/awakening 6 years ago!)

BTW - remember when we were looking to change our logo, years ago now? Our "uprising" (people against changing our logo) was a pebble in the pond compared to the TIDAL wave these clowns are riding in Nor Dakoda.

Lastly, has anyone heard anything from their native son - Phil Jackson on the matter? Just askin. Go Jacks!!

What I'm referring to is the reality of other schools actually cancelling sporting events and disinviting UND teams from participating in events. This was the inevitable result, regardless of how anyone views the underlying issues of the matter.

Of course, there are those who will ignore even near-death/Come-To-Jesus moments, aren't there?

The NCAA sent a letter yesterday, 2/29/12, restating what will now happen because UND has resumed use of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo (the reason for the resumption: the petition referring the repeal law has the effect of putting the repealer on hold and therefore the legislation mandating use of the name is no longer repealed). Who's on first?

Here's the link (to the Grand Forks Herald) to the letter (note the misspelling by the NCAA of Brian Faison's name: Brain.)

                              http://legacy.grandforksherald.com/p...r Feb 2012.pdf

Whether one likes or dislikes the NCAA, the organization is merely doing what it said it would do in the settlement of the lawsuit with North Dakota a while back (is it about two years now?). Watch for some UND fans to act surprise by this "latest" development.

The letter should (not sure it will) have the effect of bringing some to their senses but it will also risk driving some off the road and tumbling into the abyss.

I agree whole-heartedly. I just think they have let the fringe drive the bus long enough and someone with a brain needs to take the steering wheel and turn that bus around.
