Not saying I agree with the concept but its the facts, I was not a D-I athlete or a college athlete at all, but talk to them, I know of a really good baseball player whose D-I coach told him he couldn't play baseball, actually know of a few of them. And that is in the off-season.
I'm friends with athletes too. Weird.

During the season, they work their asses off. And during the offseason they also work their asses off, but they also have time to party, play video games or do whatever. For example, the best Call of Duty (that's a game for Xbox, old-timers) player I know is a D1 basketball player. During his free time during the off-season, he plays a ton because he loves it. If that passion was hunting and he decided to go a different school so that he would have been able to do that, I would not have blamed him at all.

So to say that an athlete shouldn't make a decision based off of "an outside situation (hunting/outdoors or any other reason)" (your words, my emphasis) is absolutely asinine. If two colleges are equal in the athlete'e eyes but he like the outdoor opportunities that school X provides that school Y doesn't, then he should choose that school. Because the **** someone does in their free time (and student athletes DO have free time) make them a happier person and they will be able to perform better at work, school or athletics.

It astounds me how much more seriously fans (short for fanatics) tend to take athletics than athletes. Which is NOT to say that athletes don't take athletics seriously. They have to in order to make it as far as they do. I just think that most athletes (at least the ones that I am friends with) realize that there is more to life than athletics. Fans tend to think of student-athletes as ONLY student-athletes, when in reality most of them are extremely well rounded people that have lots of different interests.

Good post. Rep pts given. SA are special people because of their athletic talent which makes them special while on campus. Its a special time for SA. How they spend their time is really their business and theirs alone.

I got to know Pete Retzlaff in a few conversations that I had with him. He told of being in a play one time in which a bottle of wine was sitting on the table as part of the play scene. Coach Ralph Ginn just happened to take in this play and subsequently admonish Pete for being in the play where wine was served because it did not honor his image on campus. It sounds kind of square by todays standards, but it only shows that athletes do have other interests and talents and its been that way for a long time.

        Best post in the thread.

Athletes choose schools for many reasons and not all of them have to do with the sport they are playing at said school. I knew several athletes while I was at SDSU and all of them had a life outside the classroom and gym. Weird.

Alec Peters who has an offer from SD-State, has received an offer from Butler, as well as Western Michigan and a boat load of other schools.

Luke Worthington has named his final list and South Dakota St. is not 1 of them. Included on his list are Butler, BYU, Davidson, Penn, and Princeton

Those who speculate what Lane Severyn is looking for in a University outside of basketball (quite comical comments) can relax as he's visiting SDSU today. He was at NDSU yesterday and Wyoming is not in the picture.

Skyler Flatten visited SDSU on Thursday.

Thanks Cadsev. I think being close to these players puts you in the know. Some how, someway, Coach Nagy is going to find the players that can take his program to a new level. These names are not exactly house hold names yet, at least not to me, and maybe thats the way it should be.

Why would he visit today when everyone went home yesterday? The campus will be a ghost town for the next few weeks - isn't the advantage to let him meet up with the players, maybe watch them workout? See the campus is the best possible light - surely an abandoned campus isn't going to blow anyone away.

If Lane's reported progress if reliable and actual, he will be a household name in the world of high school basketball before his senior year is done. Pierre should be an overwhelming favorite to win state in my opinion. 6'7" and 6'9" kids with skills do not grow on trees in this state and Pierre has 2. Not to mention their other big is a Junior is in the 6'6"-6'7" range and filled in nicely off the bench last year.

The point is if he improved as much as reported he might blow up in the recruiting world...because his name is going to be circulated heavily if the reports are true.

There is a quantium leap from Riggs high to the Summit League. Until they sign and get a few games under their belt, we never know what we are getting. I am sorry, but I dont even recall the names of the 4 who left the team this spring. Those 4 could not cut the mustard and are gone, but I recall high hope comments about them. That is not to say the 2 guys from Pierre will fail. They could as you point out be quite successful. I saying now is not the time to get excited and I do not get real excited about recruiting. Its the coach's job. Let him be the deal maker.

Since the offer has been out there for awhile, I am sure Mr. Severyn knows his way around campus, and if the coaches are around to answer questions and confirm that the offer is still on the table, thats all that needs to be there. Also the academic advisors who might answer any questions relating to education should also be there. Did not some one say his parents are SDSU alums?

I believe the team can't have scheduled practices during the summer. They guys can get together on their own, but the coaches can't be there.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

The NCAA contact rules have recently been relaxed, saw comments from Coach Nagy that he has enjoyed more contact with his players this summer. I know they still have limited contact concerning formal team practice but the kid could definitely watch the guys do their own scrimmages etc. My point was about this timing of this visit, SDSU will be very very quiet today compared to earlier in the week, it just seemed like a very odd time to visit, particularly from an in-state prospect. I like that this years freshmen come from all over the country, I hope that the coaching staff continue to expand their boundaries.....
