Re: Hot Stove 2010-11: Men's Basketball Edition

Things like this certainly have the potential to reflect negatively on the program. One of the greatest difficulties we have had during the transition to DI has been senior leadership, experience. The loss/defection of these individuals will not help with that.

The positive, as mentioned by others, opportunity for younger and perhaps better players to contribute and move the team forward. I wonder what kind of heads-up our staff had regarding these guys? I got the feeling when I visited with a few of them at the Summit tourney that change was coming.

Re: Hot Stove 2010-11: Men's Basketball Edition

I very well might be wrong, but I view this as a positive.

Mike gave us some quality minutes last year that could easily be missed. But the opportunity to bring in another player w/ possibly more offensive ability remains. That said, Nate Wolters is one of the cornerstones and I can see him logging 30+ minutes a game at PG for the next 3 years.

AC had some great games for us but he seemed to take a step back last year. His heart didn't seem in it at times and if that's the case it's better for him to just do what he did and hang 'em up. Again, the possibility of signing someone possibly better suited to help remains.

I had high hopes for Rader and what I hear was a great outside stroke. The staff has seen him for 2 years now. Nagy and his dad are friends and I imagine Nagy wanted nothing more than Rader to succeed. Nagy pulling Raders schollie means that Nagy didn't think Rader could contribute and I guess we have to trust Nagy here.

Nagy spoke last year of how he wondered if the upperclassmen had been ruined by the beatings they took (especially on the road) early on in their careers. Well, suddenly 5 of those guys are gone. Someone said last year that returning every player from a team that lost 19-straight on the road might not be a good thing. I guess now we're kind of wiping the slate clean and starting over w/ a new team. We'll see...

I would have to agree that the roster may have some holes right now, but mark my words in the next week or so, we will forget all about this day come next Wednesday when the Spring signings happen.

I have not heard of four potential players but a couple that may be coming may just help the bad feeling some may have right now!

The quote in the Argus about Cordova leaving was: "He gave Nagy the news on Tuesday. The coach called it "a bomb." It does not sound like Nagy expected this.

Re: Hot Stove 2010-11: Men's Basketball Edition

I for one am excited, 4 players are out and 4 new players will be in. Probably only 1 or 2 for this year, hopefully JUCO's. We need a backup point guard and backup Post player.

Anybody know of SD players that could walk-on and help this year incase we need the depth? Mitch White? Cory Jacobsen? Adol Aluong?

                  My take:

Cordova's heart wasn't in it anymore and I commend him for opening up his scholly instead of trudging through the 2010 season. As was noted, he played through alot of injuries this year and he is ready to move on. I wish him the best.

Same with Palarca. These two have families and being a D1 b-ball player demands alot of time and dedication, but so does a family and a family is more important. Some might see it as quitting, but I see it as them making the best decision for their futures and I'm sure the decision wasn't easy. It takes a mature man to be able to muster of the courage to do what's right and I don't doubt that it was hard to let down the coaching staff, players, & fans.

Cassaday - Unfortunate that he is leaving this year as we could use him as a backup PF. I would guess he saw himself as the odd man out in the Cordova/Fiegen/Dykstra/Heemstra front court. I wonder if he would have stayed if he knew Cordova was leaving since his playing time would probably go up some.

Radar - Great shooter, but didn't seem to have the athleticism to play SG/SF and didn't have the low post game or mentality to play PF. Had to be a tough move for Nagy but I'm sure he did it believing it was best for James to get out now while he still has 3 years of eligibility.

Like I said, this isn't the end-all. We still have the core of group of Wolters, Sargent, Fiegen, White, Dykstra, Heemstra & Carlson. Add a couple JUCO's and some promising players next year and the move could turn out to be a positive.

I'm sure some will take this time to bash on the program and bash on Nagy, call for heads, etc.. The only real loss here is AC, and after last year is it really a loss because his heart, head and body were not in it? I liked Palarca, he was fun to watch because of his attitude and fearlessness, but I don't view him as a deal breaker. Good for them in choosing to place family above hoops. I'm sure the decision will live with them forever, and they will always have a tinge of regret. But that is their decision.
I feel at peace with this already and I am really looking forward to next season with talented freshman and sophmores.

I know some people are thinking this it's ok we lost 4 players. I totally understand their point of view. Players like AC and Palarca have experience that you cannot replace. Maybe they would not have had the same size role they had this year but they still would be a part of our DEPTH. We lose depth with those two. Injuries and illness are a part of the game and having those two and knowing what they are capable of would be a nice thing to have. Adding freshman or a juco to the mix is fine, but you never know what you are gonna get or how a kid plays at this level until you see it.

I wish them well and hope things work out perfectly for them.

IMHO, Cordova, when physically and mentally ready to play was a difference maker. When he wasn't ready both physically and mentally, he was a liability on the floor. It sounds like, based on the TV notes, that Anthony's heart wasn't into making himself ready for the full demands that would be required. If that's the case, I wish him the best, great that he's getting his degree, and I look forward to seeing him join us here as an ardent SDSU fans.

Palarca size was always the concern, and I was pleasantly surprised by some of his games this year. He's the one that I'd like to see return, as his spelling of Wolters will be needed. Someone else will need to be the "other" point guard, and ready to add when Wolters needs a break. Palarca clearly was that other PG, but someone new will make that case this upcoming season.

Rader and Cassaday were, at best, bench depth. It's interesting that Jacks are getting deep enough to feel that a marginal D-I, but solid D-II or D-III quality player isn't sufficient for that role.

I like the progress that the MBB is making at SDSU. However, Jacks still have a ways to go to be the consistent Summit favorite, like Jacks used to dominate the NCC. Butler's run to the National title game was reaffirmation of why SDSU made this move. Shame that last half-court heave didn't go in for the Bulldogs to take out Duke.

Here's the facts for next year, things we need to find prior to the fall:

We lost over 50% of our minutes, scoring, rebounding, and assists. These are big numbers to overcome with the thought of using two small town Iowa, small school players. In my opinion we need to hit the Nebraska and Iowa Community Colleges that have a history of using players that didn't have the grades necessary for D1. The CC's in Norfolk and Des Moines are logical places to start.

The coaching staff might be a step or two ahead of you - they had a point guard in a week or two ago from Southeastern CC in Burlington.

D-1 men's basketball teams get 13 schollies, max. The Jacks are losing 7 scholarship players in one off-season (counting the 3 seniors). The transition is over, but here we go again, looking for bright spots in the future. There are bright spots and opportunities, to be sure, but waiting for them to play out sure gets tiring. I'm wearing out.
