Have you seen Dykstra or Heemstra play? Small town, small school doesn't mean what it used to when you have summer basketball teams that travel the country and play against kids from across the US. Size and talent is size and talent no matter where you are from. I don't think the coaches expect two players to replace 7.

Call me crazy, but I am strangely comfortable with what has just transpired.

We have 2 people leaving for noble reasons on good terms, and two others that were struggling to get playing time who looked to (or was forced to) move on and seek out better situations. Sure we are losing 7 people now from last years team, but...

... we still have one of the best scorers in the league in Clint Sargent; we have an emerging point guard who has the potential of not only being good, but great; we still have 2 hard nose, blue collar players in Moss and Griff Callahan; we have a ton of potential coming from our 2009 recruiting class who now have a year of college ball under their belts; we have two 6'9" recruits that are rated higher nationally than any other Summit League team can say...

...and best of all, there is some real good talent still out there that we very well could be in the running for (cough, cough, Alec Brown).

Probably not the post for it, but what about Larson, is he still going to iowa? if he could he would be able to fill some of cordovas space. I was disapointed to see Rader leave, We only have 1 real 3 pt threat that we have, the rest are still not proven. White most likely can be, Carlson hopefully. Sargent will have a lot of teams gunning for him on the line. I figured Rader could have been a very effective small forward for getting good match ups to get the 3. I guess if he is that slow and his D is that bad its not going to cut it. I just hope we dont get exicted to have a juco come in and take a space just becuse we are out of options. I would not mind seeing jacobson come next year with his 3 point shooting abaility. I really think we have a core that will get the most playing time even if they would have stayed.

          PG Wolters - Carlson
          SG Sargent - Calahan
          SF Moss- White
          Post -Dykstra - Hemstra
          Post - Fiegen

Thats 9 guys that will see plently of time. I am not worried about that group, just a little young. I see a legit PG, I see some scorers, I see some hard nosed defenders, I see shoot blockers, I see rebounders, I see great passers, I see options. Palarca would be nice to have as a back up still, Cordova if he returned to his soph form would have been a big asset, but that is neither here nor there. It is what it is and I think we will be just fine.

Things happen. Sometimes things don't work out or bigger things take your life in other directions. No regrets in that.

My biggest regret on this was inadvertently tripping over Lakes' monumental stupidity in the Argus comment line. However, on the positive side: we can stipulate that the difference between these departures and those in other places is that none of the Jacks are leaving because they stole someone else's property or did anything remotely close to it... all are moving on for honest life reasons.

Good luck to all four young men.

I guess both. I know the staff has continued recruiting even though there were no schollies available. That right there says alot. IMO, I think they knew Mike was leaving, knew they were gonna let Rader go and probably had an idea that Cassaday was leaving as well.

Believe it or not we will be a better basketball team in October. Some very talented kids out there looking for a home and we have immediate vacancy with lots of playing time available. Palarca is the only one I hate to see leave. Best of luck to all of them. I believe we will get three players including a juco point guard, juco center and freshman center.

Dykstra was a verball to Iowa State, before he backed out. Wake Forest gave him a call as well as some other respectable D1 programs (like Davidson, Hawaii, Colorado State to name a few). Heemstra is said to have a higher ceiling than Dykstra even. Not to mention they have played together now for how many years? I know not too long ago they were rated as the top two incoming frosh in the Summit. Sell called Dykstra one of the most hyped Mid-Con/Summit signees ever.

I agree. Frankly, I'm excited that the young players will get more minutes. That will really pay off in a couple years.

Just a couple of thoughts that popped into my head....

I remember a year or so ago hearing that the staff was trying to turn Rader into an inside player. This meant that they were comfortable w/ him as an outside player (defense, shooting, quickness, who knows?). His release might mean that, despite his 6'8 frame, they don't think he'll be an effective inside guy now either.

My other thought is purely my opinion. One of the neatest things, for me, in college bball is the enthusiasm that the end of the bench guys show. You know, the 20-20 guys (guys who don't play unless you're up 20 or down 20). How they jump off the bench at timeouts and come running and greeting their 'mates. It was discussed on here before about how our end of the bench didn't do that this year. Maybe a disgruntled Cassaday and Rader were a big reason why? Not blaming them, just speculating.

I think the loss of kind of laid back veteran guys like AC, Callahan, Kai and Engen will be a good step in us getting back to playing w/ more emotion. There is now a chance for a couple guys to step up and become leaders on this team. Dale? Sarg? Even Dykstra, who kind of plays w/ a little "edge".

Great point. I hope we hear only good things about Palarca in the future, even if he is moving to, ugh, California . I hope we see AC wearing a badge on the streets and blue and yellow at Frost. I hope we see Cassaday and Rader breaking at sweat every night at their next stop and helping guide a team to success. In communicating w/ Raders father he had nothing but positive things to say about SDSU. Best to all involved.

See, I agree. For those that think the AC loss will really hurt I just ask you to remember the (lack of) defense he played alot last year and how frustrating that was. Our interior defense couldn't get any worse most games. I thnk Mike only saw himself playing 10 mins a game since Wolters is no doubt an all-Summit kid the next three years. We could use Raders 3-pt shooting but we have to figure Nagy has seen the kid for two years now and we have to trust him, not what we think we might know.

These moves could hurt us short term but absolutely have a greater chance of making us much better at the end of next year, the following year and beyond. We only lose 3 contributors the next two years!

The page has turned. We still embrace and need the experience of Sarg, Moss and Grif....but this is now the team of Nate, Dykstra, Heemstra and the other pups.

Guys - I need some help here. TV was on 99.1 this afternoon and stated that the decision to take away Radar's scholarship was Nagy's and Nagy's alone, and that Radar wanted to stay.

                            First question, is this true?

Second question, does this happen a lot at other programs that I am just not aware of it? I am a big Duke fan and have seen multiple "transfers" for lack of playing time, but have not seen the removal of scholarship for poor play.

I can understand pulling a scholly if a player is not committing himself to the program. However, I cannot understand doing it if it was because my coaching staff or myself misjudged this young man's talent during recruiting and now I am pulling his scholarship because he is "not good enough to play at this level". I do not know this young man's financial backing, but Nagy could theoretically be taking away his opportunity to gain a college degree.

If the latter is true, my donations to the athletic department will cease ASAP, along with my company's participation in the jackrabbit guarantee match program. IMO, there is simply no excuse for this at our university.

PLEASE tell me I am wrong.

If you are going to go as far as to pull donations/company participation because of this action, I would recommend finding out as many details about the situation as possible before making a decision. I don't have any details, but maybe talking with someone with first hand knowledge of the events could help shed some light on the participants' thoughts and reasoning.

"Sometimes kids transfer," said Bill Rader, James' father and a longtime friend of Nagy. "James didn't transfer. He was told he didn't have a place anymore for whatever reason."

Nagy claims he did that - about three weeks ago - in the best interest of the player.
"It's almost like we needed to push him out and get him going again so he could have a good basketball experience," he explained. "I knew it wasn't going to happen here as quickly as he wanted."

What a bold-face lie. "In the best interest of the player". Yeah right. Obviously this kid was good enough for Nagy at one point, but now, not so much. That must leave a great impression on our future recruits. If you come here and don't perform to level that I "thought" you could, I'm taking away your scholarship.

This is a sad day for SDSU. My money train to SDSU is now officially being "re-routed".
