  • Re: 2008-09 Recruits

I heard from several people that Schilling was the best player on the floor Friday night.

That might be, but on Sunday he was about the 6th or 7th best kid on the floor. And Louie Krogman was held to 8 points. Cody Larson played great against Iverson, beating him off the dribble and with a variety of moves inside. Iverson was obviously tired from his trip to New Mexico, but it was still an impressive performance!

That is what is so hard about trying to project what these kids will do in college. I do not envy the coaches.

They both look good in Blue and Gold.......even if it's not the right shade of color........

Well, they have a couple more seasons in Maroon and Gold and then we get to have them!

Of course I announce MHS basketball, so it's not like I really get to lose them! LOL

Add Washington State to the list of offers for Colton Iverson.

Some more amateur analysis of prospects who played in the Dakota Showcase championship game on Saturday night:
Unfortunately for the Dakota Heat, the best players on the court were Iowa Barnstormers, a team of will-be-juniors that beat the Heat by 15 points (and at times led by more than 20). Particularly impressive was a Cliff Warner, a Nash-like guard listed at 5-10 (that seemed generous) who penetrated and dished off all night. Louie Krogman and other tired Heat defenders had serious trouble keeping up with him.
Cody Schilling was the best Heat player on the floor, a 6-5 guard who takes the ball down the court and plays well around the basket and all over the court. Lots of potential. He would look great in a Jacks uniform.
Jared Vlastain (spelling?) is listed at 6-5 but plays bigger. He's a good jumper. Don''t know if he has much of a perimeter game.
Colton Iverson is a lanky 6-10 who also jumps well. He kind of like Mark Engen now, but with some muscle could be really good.
Krogman had an off game shooting. He clanked a lot of iron but was confident enough to keep putting up shoots. He'll be a good college player, a shooter. He would be a fan favorite in Brookings. There's little doubt about that.
                This space for lease.

It sounds like Colton is having one heck of a summer and has played himself out of our reach. Unless he wants to play close to home, feels his chances of making the "Big Dance" via a Summit League Championship (played in front of the home folks in Sioux Falls) are better then playing at a "bigger" program that plays in a super tough conference, and/or he wants to be a hero who helps to "put the local school on the map". I can dream can't I?

All these reports on summer games are very interesting. I going to leave it all to the coaching staff who do the recruiting. I think if they approach these fine young men in a forthright manner and promise them only what SDSU has to offer, we will end up with good athletes. Of course an improved season in win and losses will make the outlook even brighter.

                      Just to refresh here:

2008 Class -- One remaining scholarship. Staff is looking for a big man to fill the post position. Obviously Colton Iverson fills a need here. To date no other scholarships remain. That could change if someone leaves.

2009 Class -- Commitments for the only two scholarships from Tony Fiegen and Chad White. No other scholarships remain.

2010 Class -- Many scholarships (as many as 4 or 5) and staff is well on their way to finding athletes to fill these needs.

The main focus on the staff this summer is finding a big in the 2008 class. Reading between the lines it doesn't look like they are searching for a guard or wing player for 2008. Of course with transfers and other issues that could arise (never know) from someone being suspended or leaving the team there is the possibility this could change. Again, you never know from year to year but the state of recruitment today is solidly in place. Only one more for 2008 and nothing as of today more to get in 2009.

Does this mean we are not pursuing Cody Schilling any more? I guess not. If the rumor about adding a Juco guard to this years class is true then maybe we decided to move on without Cody Schilling.

That also means no Louie Krogman. Sorry to bring his name up again, I know that he is a lightning rod for discussion, but based upon what I have heard about his size and athleticism, I'm glad we passed on him.

We could use one more big for this years class and I'm glad to hear that we are still trying to fill that spot.

If, as I am hearing, we have signed a JUCO guard from Maryland we are done for '07 and have our team.  The "Big" that Cadsev is talking about is for the class of '08, and would join James Radar (6'7" forward from Colorado who has already committed) for our '08-'09 team.  So, unless something changes we are done with 1s, 2s, and 3s for awhile.  It doesn't look good for those who want to see Krogman or Schilling in a Rabbit uniform (unless they want to walk on  ).

Hopefully we will begin to have limited recruiting slots. Sure beats the turnover of recent years.

Not saying we would or should, but scholarships are one year deals. Most of the time a school will continue the scholarship to team rosters throughout there eligibility. They (school, coach) could give scholarships to whoever they choice. So, I would would say both Schilling and Krogman or anyone for that matter could get a scholarship if SDSU felt they were more deserving than an existing player.
