Thanks for reminding me about Ryan Miller. I had done my best to block that name out of my mind!

Great update though. I wish Colton the best. If he works hard, he has a very bright future!

Excellent info, I had heard the New Mexico rumor previously but I wasn't aware of the connection. Again, only speculation, New Mexico is a long way from South Dakota. I think many of us can relate to opportunities which were turned down because of geography. I want to continue to believe that SDSU has as good a shot as New Mexico at landing Colton Iverson and the support of his family and community.

Jacks and many other schools looking at Kwamain Mitchell a 6'0 Point guard out of Whitefish Bay, WI who graduates in 2008. According to Iowa Preps another player gaining interest from the Dakota Schools is Cimion George a 6'6 post player out of Cedar Rapids Kennedy. NDSU looking at Eric Jorgenson a 6'8 forward from SC East.

Per a friend of the Iverson family, North Carolina, Duke, and most of the Big 12 and Big 10 teams have "expressed interest" in Colton since he played in the M33M tourney. I guess there is suppose to be an offer coming from some major conference program soon. Time will tell.

Paul Seville is the guest on the Argus SportWeb, he has some great things to say about future Jackrabbit Chad White.  Well worth the time to listen:

Went to the game tonight and it was a pretty fun watch.  First time I've been to any Schoolers game.  The Heat ended up winning by about 12 and Colton Iverson did not play.

White had a pretty big first half with about 14 in the first but was pretty quiet in the second half, I think he may have had some foul trouble.  Fiegen had a few nice plays as well, but didn't seem quite as aggresive as White was.  Both could use some time in the weight room, but they have another two years of high school to fill out.  I think we have two pretty decent recruits with these guys, they should be pretty versatile players.  I'd put White as a 2 or 3 and Fiegen at probably a 3 depending on how he fills out.  Both will be able to get up and down the floor and with White's range he should be some nice offense.

Roosevelt center Cody Larson also looked pretty good, still a bit raw and tried to do too much at times, but he definitely has potential.  He also needs to add some muscle, but is mobile and athletic for his size and looks like he is developing a decent mid-range shot.  If he adds some strength, plays within himself, and works on his mid-range shot he'll be hot commodity down the road.

Jordan Miller from Mitchell looked pretty good too, he's 6'5" and has a nice stroke, as all Miller's seem to have, and is really long for his height.  I could see him growing another couple inches, he could be interesting to follow in AA this year.

As for the Heat, it was pretty much all Cody Schilling, Louie Krogman, and Jared Vlastuin.

I was most impressed by Schilling, he is a very smooth player and had nice touch around the basket.  Likes to take it to the hole and looked to be a good finisher.  He struggled with the outside shot tonight, not sure if that is common for him or not, but he looked good either way.

Krogman had a pretty decent game, I'm guessing he put up close to 20.  Had some decent steals and a few boards.  I just don't know if he is quite quick enough to be a solid DI gaurd.  I think he would be a great instant offense type player off the bench, I'm just not sold completely about him being a starting type mid-major DI guard. He may be worth a flier though, the kid can flat out shoot and had some nice chip shot drives to the basket. It will be interesting to see where he ends up next year.

First time I've ever seen Vlastuin play and he's a fun guy to watch.  Had a monster dunk in the first half and tried to jump over a guy in the lane in the 2nd half for another.  He's an active body and played hard.  Like Krogman, I'm not sure if he has the size for DI with type of game he plays as I think he was listed at about 6'6".  He could be a very good DII player though, and may get a shot with a smaller DI school.

I was dissapointed Iverson wasn't there tonight, he was one of the main guys I was looking forward to seeing. Didn't hear anything on why he wasn't playing or if he will play in tomorrow's game at all.

Disclaimer: I'm by no means an expert or scout or coach or anything, these are just my observations from watching one game.  I'm sure some had better or worse nights than usual, this is just my take on how they looked.

Mel Kiper Jr., you can keep your job.

I went to the Dakota Schoolers Invitational tonight to take in the showdown between the host club and the South Dakota Heat and do a little talent scouting. The most important lesson that I learned: This is a tough gig. Coaches must be good at projecting and great at accepting their decisions for better or for worse. I sometimes spend hours regretting ordering the ham instead of the turkey at lunch time.

So without further ado, some observations from a game that featured at least a handful of future NCAA Division I players:

Unfortunately, rising Yankton project Colton Iverson was absent, attending a big-man camp at New Mexico (where Mitchell’s Ryan Miller is an assistant). Enough said.

The Schoolers have two highly touted sophomores from Roosevelt, Adol Aluong and Cody Larson. Because critiquing 15-year olds makes me comfortable, I’ll keep this brief, but it’s obvious why the 6-8 Larson is considering a top 100 recruit in his class. He’s oh-so close to fitting into this body and when he does, he will be incredible. Look out for the Rough Riders for the next three years.

Schoolers starters and Madison juniors Chad White and Tony Fiegen have both verballed to SDSU. White seems smaller than 6-7 and that’s a compliment. He moves really well on the perimeter and has a smooth shot. He also guarded Louie Krogman in stretches. Schoolers founder Paul Seville said this week that SDSU got a steal here and I’m not going to argue. As for Fiegen, he’s also 6-7 and, although he also moves very well, is more of a post. He’s less offensively polished than White, but rebounds wells and has broad shoulders and seems to have spent time in a weight room.

Heat swing Cody Schilling, a senior at Ellworth, Minn., exhibited great quickness for being 6-5 - and that’s good because he’s more of a slasher than a shooter. He said that he has offers from NDSU, SDSU, USD, Wisconsin-Green Bay - pretty much every school in the region that isn’t in a BCS conference. But he said that level doesn’t matter to him. He wants to stay in the region and end up in the right setting. His brother, Curt, plays for Northwestern in Iowa and Schilling said that school is also still in the picture.

Krogman, on the other hand, wants to play Division I. He said the current front runners are Nevada and Montana State, but he does have offers from most regional schools including SDSU and USD.

This is the first time I’ve seen the White River and Schoolers-turned-Heat guard play. He is a strangely polarizing figure. There are lots of skeptics - such is the burden of any prolific scorer - and just as many believers. The old folks in the gym acted like they were watching an And1 mix tape every time he scored .. and he scored a lot, 29 points. Keep that in mind when you read this note that I wrote during the game: “Good height on jumper and shot is as good as advertised yet fewer shots available because of his size.”

That’s the thing about Krogman, who will become the state’s all-time leading scorer early this winter. Listed at 6-1, but probably closer to 6-feet even, conventional wisdom says he’s too short to score at the Division I level and that’s basically the whole of his game. Then you look at the box and realize that he scored 29 on a limited number of shots in a game featuring many (young) D-I prospects.

Points are points, scholarships are limited and I really should have ordered the turkey.

Unless Jordan has grown 3 inches since the HS season he is no where near 6'5"  I would agree though that he may grow quite a bit yet as his feet have always been huge compared to his height. If you watch the 3mm3 video he looks like a boy among men when it comes to playing with D1 type guards though.

Yeah I think you are right, he was probably 6'2". Had alot of names and heights to try to remember, my bad.

I'd love to see Schilling come to SDSU. Iverson and Krogman, too. That would be a heck of core.
