    NDSU keeps cool about league

    By Jeff Kolpack, The Forum
    Published Tuesday, October 31, 2006

If North Dakota State takes a step forward with the Gateway Football Conference in the near future, don’t expect Bison administrators to be throwing going-away parties for the Great West Football Conference. In fact, don’t expect a party at all.

NDSU has too many ties –

both contractually and emotionally – and will most likely take a low-key approach to the impending expansion plans of the Gateway.

It would be a contrast from two months ago when NDSU was accepted into the Mid-Continent Conference, which will be home to all of NDSU’s sports except football and wrestling. An enthusiastic standing-room only crowd was on hand at the NDSU Alumni Center for the announcement.

The Mid-Con is the administrative arm of the Great West. If Western Kentucky, as expected, announces Thursday that it will move to Division I-A football, then the Gateway is expected to move into expansion mode.

The league has already asked NDSU and South Dakota State for institutional profiles. Bison athletic director Gene Taylor admitted the Gateway would be tough to turn down.

Not that it would be easy.

“Take somebody like Southern Utah athletic director Ken Beazer,” Taylor said. “He’s a great guy and he supported us big time to get into the Mid-Con. Then you turn around and possibly say we’ll take your football league and implode it. It’s not a lot of fun.”

If NDSU does get into the Gateway, it would probably be the last major conference move for the foreseeable future. The school’s contract with the Mid-Con stipulates it must stay in the league for eight years or pay a $500,000 buyout.

Valparaiso, which will leave the Mid-Con after this season, owes the league a $250,000 buyout because of improper notice, Taylor said. . . .

If the Gateway does add NDSU and SDSU, the Great West would be down to three teams: Southern Utah, California Poly and California Davis.

Great West commissioner Ed Grom said Monday that the league has already identified potential new members. He said he couldn’t divulge the names of schools, but he said an announcement could come as early as January. The University of North Dakota, which is moving to Division I in 2008, is one likely candidate. . . . (read more)

      Re: SDSU/NDSU to Gateway???

Interesting article from the NDSU side of things. If the GWFC could get an auto-bid, it would be preferable if the GWFC and the Gateway could figure out a scheduling arrangement to help fill many of the non-conference dates. I don't see an auto-bid happening soon and I see UND and USD on the GWFC's horizon, a prospect that many encourage many NDSU and SDSU backers to favor jumping to the Gateway. Even if the GWFC could get its auto-bid, the conference's future is pretty iffy as UC-Davis could look at I-A and SUU always has an eye on the BS Conference.

        Re: SDSU/NDSU to Gateway???

I was reading the new Argus leader's beat writer's blog about some comments Stig made about playing in the Gateway. He said that it is easier getting ready for Cal-Poly or UC Davis because of his familiarity of the team and coaches. It is much harder to get ready for Nichols St. and McNeese St. because the coaches and players have never seen them play before. They are just unfamiliar with most non-conference opponents.

Here is the blog URL http://blogs.argusleadermedia.com/sports/

I know that we have discussed how getting into the Gateway will help with scheduling, but I also think it will help in the familiarity of our opponent.

I really do hope that Western Kentucky announces that they are moving to D-1a on Thursday.

I saw that as well and commented in 2009+ thread. Even with only 5 teams in the conference it's nice to see repeat matchups like GSU in the future.

Today is the day for Western Kentucky's decision to leave the Gateway and move to I-A.

              Gateway chances improve

              By Jeff Kolpack, The Forum
              Published Thursday, November 02, 2006

North Dakota State’s entrance into the Gateway Football Conference will probably gain steam today. The Western Kentucky University board of regents is expected to approve the school’s request to move its football program to NCAA Division I-A.

It would leave the Gateway with seven members. The league has already requested institutional profiles from NDSU and South Dakota State.

“We think we’re going to lose Western Kentucky,” said Northern Iowa athletic director Rick Hartzell. “I don’t think there are any games going on here. We’ve had weekly meetings and phone calls. I think we need to do something with expansion, and one place we’re looking at, obviously, is the Dakotas.” . . . (read more)

Football conference requests information from SDSU, North Dakota State

                Brian Kimmes

Recently, the Gateway Football Conference has asked SDSU for a packet of information, specifically information about the football program. The Gateway conference has also sought information from North Dakota State University.

SDSU Athletic Director Fred Oien said SDSU has been in contact with the Gateway Football Conference on and off for the past five years. He said informal discussions about the possibility of SDSU joining the Gateway conference began six months ago.

The Gateway Football Conference consists of teams from the Midwest, including University of Northern Iowa, Illinois State, Indiana State, Missouri State, Southern Illinois, Western Illinois, Western Kentucky and Youngstown State.

The reason why SDSU and NDSU have been contacted about possible admittance to the Gateway is because of the rumors going on about Western Kentucky. Western Kentucky belongs to the Sun Belt Conference in every sport besides football.

"The discussion on that campus that I've read is that Western Kentucky is considering moving their football program to the Sun Belt, which means they would go 1-A, which would leave the Gateway at seven schools," said Oien. "Conferences, in football, really like to have a minimum of eight (teams). A lot of times, nine works very good in football-only playing conferences, because you can guarantee four home and four away, every year."

"So the conversations between us and the Gateway have been in lieu of the fact that maybe Western Kentucky leaves," he said.

Oien said Western Kentucky is expected to announce its decision by Nov. 3. . . . (read more)

                  Re: SDSU/NDSU to Gateway???

Filbert, thanks for the two links.  The first link was to the Western Kentucky Herald.  I take it that's the school newspaper.  The article in the WKU Herald presents Title IX in a manner I had not understood before.  So, if I assume the reporter got it right, then the heart of the "problem" that D-1A football can solve for WKU is increasing athletic scholarships for men by 22 to bring it into the same ratio as the number of male athletes bears to the number of female athletes.

What?  I thought there were a number of factors considered in the Title IX analysis, one of which was the ratio of male to female students in the school's population...not the ratio of athletes.  If it was the ratio of athletes as it seems to be stated in the article, then some schools would be tempted to simply cut female sports (and thereby keep the ratio of men/women athletes heavily in favor of the men so that the men would get all the scholarship money).

If the WKU Herald analysis is correct, then why have male athletic programs been cut at many schools to achieve compliance with Title IX?  I'm confused.

I had heard that WKU was in a unique position because it had to add men's scholarships to reach compliance with Title IX but the reason for that is due to some other ratio (such as, they had too many female athletic scholarships based on WKU's ratios of male/female in the student population).  At most schools, football scholarships are the big gorilla and cause the most Title IX problems.  Schools without football (e.g. Creighton and others) have a breeze dealing with Title IX.  Schools with big football programs have to come up with ideas, some of which were sad to see (Iowa State cutting baseball a few years ago; lots of D-1A schools cutting wrestling; schools capping male participation and eliminating scholarships in non-revenue generating sports) and some of which were great ideas (SDSU adding equestrian; lots of schools adding female crew teams).

Any Title IX experts out there?  That WKU Herald analysis lost me.

I took a class on Sports Law in lawschool and we discussed Title IX, but since that was 6 years ago and I don't do anything with it anymore I've lost all of the specifics. If it helps, I can answer who at least half of the 12 dancing princesses are from the Barbies Dancing Princesses movie (my daughter's favorite movie)?

It will be fun to see how it rolls out. It's basically a win/win for Jacks fans. Either the GWFC will strengthen with members or they will be in the Gateway. The future is bright 8-)
