With the addition of SDSU and NDSU the Gateway would easily be the best conference in D-Iaa (or whatever it is going to be called).

Based strictly on location and competition, I would love for us to be going to the Gateway. However, for recruiting purposes the SLC is a much better fit.

Regardless of conference, I hope we continue to play ya'll some into the future, and NDSU also.

      From Bisonville....

The Gateway requested an insitutional/football profile from NDSU and SDSU (just like the Mid-Con process)

        Gateway takes look at SDSU
Football conference might lure Jacks from Great West

Less than three seasons into its foray into NCAA Division I-AA and an affiliation with the Great West Football Conference, South Dakota State has caught the eye of another league.

Gateway Football Conference commissioner Patty Viverito said Wednesday night that her league has requested institutional information from SDSU and North Dakota State as it studies potential expansion in the near future.

The Gateway is preparing for the possible departure of Western Kentucky, which is considering a move to Division I-A football beginning next fall. That school's board of regents will vote Nov. 2 on the Division I-A matter.

"We've had conversations with both North Dakota State and South Dakota State before," Viverito said. "But it didn't really make sense to have any meaningful conversations about Gateway football unless they had a foundation home for their other sports. The planets aligned."

In September, the Jackrabbits and Bison were accepted into the Mid-Continent Conference in everything except football - a sport the league doesn't have - beginning in 2007-08.  .  .  .  (read more)

The Dakota schools would be excellent for the Gateway. Hope you guys join.

Also this board was the first time I had ever heard that Gateway was an average conference normally we are the best.

I wake up everyday and think this, even after the loss to Northern in 98 and to LaCrosse in FB this year (the 2 most painful for me).

Another timely and well put together article by the newest writer at the Argus. I think its great, but watch out, he'll be moving up just like Solari while the current guys keep on covering junior high FB and the Lawdogs.

I think that some of the "average" talk is because the GWFC has the highest conference rating in I-AA. I think that the Gateway is one of the top, if not the premier, conference in I-AA. Some members here like our current conference FB and may prefer that the GWFC add one to three members and attempt to obtain an auto-bid. I think that a lot of SDSU fans have embraced the match-ups with UC-Davis and Cal-Poly and also like the variety of teams that we have played out-of-conference.

I think that the access to the autobid for the playoffs, the reputation of the Gateway, and the guarantee of four home games per season (and a more predictable Hobo Day!) are the major benefits of joining the conference. The limited non-conference slate, which would likely consist of a I-A game and two I-AA schools (unless I-AA gets a 12th game approved), gives us less scheduling flexibility, especially if we wanted to continue playing UC-Davis and Cal-Poly on a regular basis.

In the end, we need to jump at the opportunity to join the Gateway if invited, because of the playoff bid and the conference's reputation. Plus, we would likely be one step closer to the MoValley.

Welcome to the board, BearsCountry, and thanks for posting!

Just about sums up my opinion on this matter. I know one thing for sure, I'll take the Gateway over the BSC anyday. Of course, thats just my opinion.

                      Re: SDSU/NDSU to Gateway???

I think the talk of "jumping to the MVC" or "one step closer to the MVC" sends the wrong message and is ill timed.  We HAVE YET TO PLAY A SINGLE GAME IN THE MID-CON!

My guess is, that when our administration was interviewed during the conference site visit one of the areas they were questioned about quite thourghly was our long term committment if we were admitted.  I would also guess that our administration made a long term committment.  If they didnt, we would not have gotten in.  We owe the MidCon alot for getting us out of the independent muck.  I think as fans we need to support the committment that our administration undoubtbly gave and embrace the MidCon and get on board and knock off talk of going elsewhere even before the ship leaves the port.

For the record, looking at the Gateway is a different deal.  We were co-founders of the Great West.  Everyone went into that deal knowing full well that other opportunities might come about so us jumping ship there would hardly come as a surprise.

As Dennis Miller says, "Of course thats just my opinion, I could be wrong."

Agree--I think our goal should be to make the Mid-Con a multiple-NCAA-bid basketball conference in the next five to ten years--preferably with SDSU being one of those bids.

                          Re: SDSU/NDSU to Gateway???

HoboD nailed it for me. If we get invited to the Gateway, the other GWFC schools will most likely have a "good for you, wish it was us" response because of the nature in which that conference was set up. I am looking forward to making the Mid-Con a much more respected conference over the next several year. Of course, we all know that we can go anywhere from here.

The Gateway would be an awesome step up! Judging by the article in the Argus Liar, its pretty much a done deal if Western Kentucky makes the move.

There would be a lot more games within reasonable travel distance and it is a very well respected and stable conference.

The Great West is a starter conference plain and simple and it's future is rocky to say the least. I think it is Cal Davis that is in the midst of building a 30,000+ seat football stadium. You can't tell me that their long-term plan includes the GWFC. If we leave, other that are moving up will fill those places.

                              Onward and upward!

Not to dis our new conference for other sports, because I'm quite grateful for the Midcontinent, but this really sets some very early bedrock for a future look from the MVC as teams shuffle in and out in the future. This is really very good news for SDSU.
