Summit League basketball is complete for regular season. SDSU men will have a rematch with the Golden Eagles on Saturday and the Yotes will play Ft Wayne.

I'd like to think the Yotes were just ducking us, but in reality, they just don't have a very good team.
When they had the 19-0 run in second half, it almost appeared they were on track. The loss will have 4 games on Saturday with a different South Dakota based team in each game. It should be a good crowd for opening day.

I'm glad we're in the bottom bracket. I think a game against ORU and Omaha/Denver is an easier route than USD and NDSU/IUPUI. Considering the USD rivalry, our issues with NDSU, and how IUPUI is playing right now.
A poster on the ORU board had an interesting post comparing each men's team RPI from the end of this regular season to last year. Everyone except NDSU improved. IPFW(+151),SDSU(+45),Omaha(+166),IUPUI(+66),NDSU(-43),Denver(+29),ORU(+9),USD(+23) and WIU(+70). Looking at this shows why the Summit's ranking as a conference has improved. I hadn't checked our RPI for awhile and didn't realize we are at #40.
That's the combined record for the two SDSU basketball teams this season. While it is disappointing that the men had to share the title and the women finished two games back, it's still nice to appreciate the bigger picture for a minute. Then men finished in the top-3 for the fifth consecutive year and the women for the ninth consecutive year. Basically, we are very fortunate to have two rock-solid programs that are worthy of such high expectations. I can think of eight other Summit League schools that would love to be able to match those numbers.
Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the minutia of individual games and lose sight of the bigger picture. This level of success should not be taken for granted. Appreciate it while it is here. See you all in Sioux Falls!
I'd like to think the Yotes were just ducking us, but in reality, they just don't have a very good team.
WIU couldn't miss from behind the arc in the first half. Yotes came back and made it a game. I wouldn't go to sleep on USD, or any team on the men's side of the Summit.
Elsewhere, while the yellow and blue glasses I wear require another SDSU sweep in the SL championships, I admit an occasional, unwelcome thought that it would not be the worst thing in the world if Ft. Wayne (quelle surprise!) won the men's title. It would be healthy for the league if a non-Dakota team were able to come into the Denny and win a championship, IMHO.
Just not this year, of course.
(Obligatory, statutory "I hate IPFW" assertion to reassure anybody who thinks I'm going soft.)
351 D-I schools. The median then is #176.
Top quartile is #1-87. Second quartile 88-175. Third quartile 176-263. Fourth quartile 264-351.
SDSU's rankings (out of 351 D-I schools):
Overall Pomeroy ranking: #68
Adjusted offense: #62
Adjusted defense: #114
Adjusted tempo: #144
Luck: #203
Strength of schedule (Pythagorean): #150
Strength of schedule (Opponent's offense): #174
Strength of schedule (Opponent's defense): #145
Non-conference strength of schedule: #105
Pomeroy rates IPFW #132 overall and #1 in his "Luck" factor.
Omaha is #138 overall, #6 in "Tempo" and #282 in "Luck."
NDSU is #153 overall, #331 in Tempo, and #291 in Non-conference strength of schedule.
ORU is #18 in Non-conference strength of schedule.
IUPUI is #199 overall, #35 in Non-conference strength of schedule.
Denver is #203 overall, #350 in Tempo and #337 in Non-conference strength of schedule.
USD is #212 overall, #48 in Luck and #60 in Tempo.
WIU is #236 overall, #318 in Luck.
League summary, According To Pomeroy:
SDSU: Good, plays fast.
Ft. Wayne: Lucky.
Omaha: Plays fast, unlucky.
NDSU: Plays slow.
ORU: Eh.
IUPUI: Eh.
Denver: Plays slow.
USD: Lucky, plays fast.
WIU: Way unlucky.
Since you're going to ask, Pomeroy's luck factor is, if I understand correctly, the difference between a team's actual results and the expected results based on the team's offensive and defensive efficiency ratings. There is Math involved. Seems to me you could just as well call it "Clutch" as "Luck."

I don't really know if I want to be in the bottom half of the bracket or not.
I know that USD gets up for SDSU but I think it would only be a little tougher to play them than ORU right now. They only have 3 guards so we should be able to take care of them with all of our seniors guards and our posts should be able to hold their own.
I'm not as worried about IUPUI as you are. I would rather play Denver then them but I'd rather play them than either NDSU or Omaha. They did beat us earlier in the year but we were missing 2 starters. I know that it was a month ago but we beat them by 22 points. I would probably rather play Omaha than NDSU but if NDSU is missing 2 starters, it might be the other way around. Of course, we only beat them by 8 points with them down 2 starters so maybe we should just avoid them.
It think it comes down to Daum and 3-point shooting for the Jacks. We don't really have guys that can get to the rack and draw fouls on a consistent basis. Parks has that ability but Nagy has asked him to focus less on scoring and more on the boards and passing, he's done a nice job. Marshall is a great jump shooter, that's what he does, even great jump shooters have bad days (except Steph Curry...enough said). Still, if teams neutralize Mike Daum, which nobody has done thus far, it comes down to guys making open 3's, at least offense does. Need Devine and Theisen to play well enough not to hurt us when Daum is out.
Then there is a the defensive end. Jacks really struggled at UNO at IPFW and even at home against ORU getting stops on defense. For that stretch of time Daum was out with about 9-10 mins left in the ORU game the lead quickly shrank from 14-6 with Telly making a huge defensive play on a dunk or it would have been 4.
Jacks, like most teams, rebound and play defense WAY better when the offense is clicking. I think the bottom is a tougher bracket. ORU has a big time player and enough talent that they will compete. USD doesn't have that. Omaha has the offensive fire power to beat a team based on that alone and should have no problem with Denver. IUPUI and NDSU will likely be a battle to the end with the winner pretty beat up.
Regardless, it's going to be a great tourney, I think as good as any year has been.

We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.

What???? Nagy has asked our leading scorer to focus on rebounding and passing? Parks hasn't played well for a while maybe but it isn't because he has been asked not to score.

It may be a situation of Parks being assigned the best offensive player like Kasperbauer or Landis or Emegano. Parks has that crucial ability to play defense on the best player from the opponent. When he spends that kind of energy on defense, he may not be as explosive on offense. I would be surprised if there are any other instructions about not shooting. It is less likely that the starting point guard would draw the toughest defensive assignment. Moffit often is used for more defense when he is in the game as well and he still finds a shot or two.
