Yes, but with a full house that would look great on national television.

Not trying to be argumentative with this, but to shed some light on the situation. Long post.

The majority were fouls. If the post defender puts their hands on the offensive player (and impedes their movement in any way), it should be called a foul (especially if they have the ball).

The biggest reason people don't think they are fouls is because teams don't go to the post much anymore. When they do the offensive post players aren't very skilled so they are easy to defend without hand-checking. How many back to the basket plays do we see in college basketball anymore? Not many. When Daum gets the ball in the post, his skill set makes him extremely hard to defend without fouling - because he is very skilled, not because refs are calling non-fouls. It is why his baseline drive starting from a back to the basket position is so tough - it is an extremely hard move to defend without your hands. He is just that good right now, and there are very few players in college basketball who play like him.

Defending the Player with the Ball

      What Changed:
Several officiating guidelines were voted in as rules, which raised the expectation and importance in this area. Four types of illegal tactics were cited:
      1. Placing and keeping a hand/forearm on opponent.
      2. Putting two hands on opponent.
      3. Continually jabbing by placing hand or forearm on opponent.
      4. Using an arm bar to impede the progress of the dribbler.

Note that simply touching the player with the ball is not an automatic foul.

      Intended Outcomes:
      • Defenders will need to move their feet as opposed to using their arms/hands to negate an offensive opportunity.
      • Increased emphasis will create a less physical game.
      • Enhancement of freedom of movement principles and a smoother game flow.

With the current set of rules, post players can't guard a skilled post without fouling. It was very frustrating watching Bjorklund play his senior year (first year with rule changes) for the same reason. Bjorklund shot about 40 more more free throws his senior year than his junior year, despite playing about 75 fewer minutes over the course of the year. He also shot more field goals. NDSU pounded the ball to him as a senior, because he was so skilled it was going to result in free throws, a made basket, or both.

FWIW, this rule change would have made it nearly impossible for Griffin Callahan to play DI college basketball. He pretty much always had his forearm on the offensive player, which is what allowed him to guard our opponents 4 so much.

Nice post. I get the hand and armbar thing. When I played you would get mauled down low and the squealy guards would get touched and a foul would get called. There is just a fine line though. If the rules are such that you literally can't defend a player then they need to be reviewed. The "straight up" thing has always been subjective but I just thought last night it was much too subjective. We did get the benefit of calls down low though because we were the only team trying to go down low. Not sure why you wouldn't go down low every 2-3 possesions given the rule changes. Is not helping game flow whatsoever.

Often times in the tourney it comes down to having an X factor. Omaha could have one, we do. maybe NDSU. FW not sure they do. They are sort of a 2 man show. Just a really good 2 man show.

Man I cant wait. sadly our tickets arent as good as they have been previous years. but should be fun. hope to have the kids there for several games.

Good points about Omaha. Coming back to play the day after a footrace game would be extra tough. Yes, a foul-fest would slow that down. However, Omaha seems to really thrive when they have refs that are willing to send them to the FT line over and over. They were among the nation's leaders in FT a few weeks ago (and may still be). I don't think we want touchy hand-fouls called on Parks/Marshall when they are trying to keep up with those quick Omaha guards. Advantage Omaha.

Also known as the lower your head and make contact with the nearest defender offense. So sick of Omaha and that crap. They look like an NBA team out there. Every time they miss a shot they act like they had to have been fouled and they've never committed a foul in their entire playing career.

I think we will see much, much more of it in the future with the way Daum is playing. Unless the rule changes.

I suspect that post defenders today are taught to use their hand/armbar until the offensive player possesses the ball and makes a move. Then they go straight up, trying to quit before they impede movement. This works against most post players who aren't quick enough or aggressive enough to get into their shooting motion before the hand is removed. I think this might get Thiesen into foul trouble, he plays physical D but the offensive player has quicker feet much of the time.

I'm not sure if I like the rules or not. I think it was implemented with perimeter players and perimeter scoring in mind, there just aren't very many good post players anymore. Especially back to the basket post players. For example, how many times did NDSU feed the post as the first option last night? Compare that to Bjorklund's senior year. Their weave offense hasn't changed, they just don't have a skilled back to the basket post anymore.

I don't watch a ton of NBA, but the same type of rules are what allows Steph Curry to be an MVP type player (Allen Iverson might go down as the GOAT if he played in today's NBA). Tons of players from the 70's-90's have come out saying Curry isn't better than players like Isaiah Thomas, but the rule book highlights his skillset. Imagine 90's Bruce Bowen guarding Curry compared to the chasing guys do today. He is a good player, but the era he is in is amplifying his ability too. Lots of people don't remember, but the NBA was having low scoring games in the 90's before their rules changed.

Interestingly enough, assuming USD goes to WIU and ends their season with a win (not a completely safe assumption considering their road record, but they seem to be playing better lately, and WIU isn't playing for anything), our game against Oral Roberts determines who we play in the 1st round in Sioux Falls. Assuming we beat ORU like we should, it sets up a 1st round matchup against USD due to USD beating ORU for the seeding tie breaker, and even if Denver loses, Denver beats USD for the tie breaker and the 6, 7, 8 seeds would go Denver, USD, ORU.

Looks like the road to the championship game could go through USD and Omaha. I could see any of IPFW, NDSU, or IUPUI being the team that makes it from the top half. Going to be an exciting tournament considering the parity this year.

I will be cheering for the USD women and against the USD men on Saturday. I really dont want a USD/SDSU matchup right away. I would need a lot of crown/water doubles to get me ready for the game. And that would be good for people around me. Just a warning, Oldhare.

That is not a problem. I could probably stay with you on the doubles since my wife will have the keys.

Looking good: message to IUPUI, don't choke on the dead elephants.

IUPUI beats Ft. Wayne 80-77. SDSU can grab a piece of the regular season title with a win this afternoon. Still the #2 seed in the tournament though. The Omaha loss is the difference.
