Agree. Not saying it won't or can't happen, but it just seems odd that one poster is basically saying she is backing out of her verbal.

By Mike Smith, Capital Journal staff
FORT PIERRE — When Sam Ostarello knows what she wants, she does not waste any time in taking it.
Ostarello, a 6-foot-2 junior at Stanley County High School, has accepted a full scholarship to play basketball at Purdue University. She is the fourth local basketball player to accept a Division I scholarship in the past two years ... (more).
Making the early commitment to play Big Ten basketball was not as easy as it sounds. Ostarello was also heavily recruited by South Dakota State University of Brookings, who gave her a scholarship offer midway through this past basketball season.
“It was definitely hard,” Ostarello said. “I’ve been close to South Dakota State since they started recruiting me. I was a little shaky telling A.J. (Jackrabbit coach Aaron Johnston) no. We had gotten really close. But you can’t pass up this opportunity. ..." (more)

Maybe we need a class on contract law! Is JackJD up to it? Special coverage should be oral offers and LOI's.

JacksWBB just tweeted "it's a great day to be a Jackrabbit!" Usually this means someone verbaled! Elite camp was either today or sometime this week. Excited to hear who it is!

In college sports, a "verbal" commitment is non-binding. It can be broken at any time. It does not represent any sort of contract.

We at SDSU live a fairly sheltered life when it comes to gaining "verbals" and then following through to signing the NLOI's. Since we generally aren't in the hunt for the top 50 prospects in the country (basketball or football), we don't generally see the nastiness of college recruiting.

At the BCS level, especially football, verbals are broken all the time, sometimes even on national signing day.

Once the LOI is signed, its a whole new ballgame. However, just because someone signs an LOI it does not mean they will be forced to play for that school.

Not forced to play, but if they don't honor a LOI,they can't play for another team for that year,in effect wasting that year.(NCAA rules ?).Am I assuming that correctly?Otherwise,a LOI is pretty useless unless it has consequences if the signee fails to honor the agreement to play for a certain school, and chooses not to.

All our commits for 2014 are verbals I think, they have to wait until Nat'l signing day( early signing period or the late signing period) their senior year to sign?

Amazing how many extraordinary athletes are coming from Pierre. Until Paluch and Lingle, there has not been many with this kind of talent. There have always been a number of good students from Pierre, even in my day, but not that athletically gifted. This has to be a golden era for Pierre Riggs High School.

Correct. I believe the year they sit out also counts as a year of eligibility, but I'm not positive.
