I never used such a term as judge because I would never take a few posts from fans that way and I never used such a term. As I said I assumed the responses were calling out a fair weather fan but wanted to make sure.

Let me clarify: There was a post about SDSU needing to recruit more innercity players (in this case a few kids from Omaha). The poster went on to say he was finding it harder to support SDSU. The next two posts told him he should not support SDSU anymore. I assumed it was because he/she was being a fair weather fan but wanted to make sure. I'll also be honest I wanted to see how people would react to the post. As the high school coach of one of the "innercity recruits" I wanted to test the climate.

I am just an interested Alum and big fan of SDSU athletics. Our university enrollment for decades has pretty much reflected the population of the upper midwest, that being predominately European American. When the prior president Peggy Gordon Miller was inaugrated, she probably had many tasks for her to take care of. My understanding is the North Central Accrediation Association had for some time been critical of SDSU for having no diversity programs of any sort. Plus Peggy in communicating with students also felt this a need and a Office of Diversity was established and has existed now for about a decade, and there have been efforts to recruit minorities so that our student enrollment would reflect a more diverse make up. Its a slow process. I grew up in Brookings and its been very European American, and a lot of Norwegians Swedes, Danes, Czechs, Dutch and Germans making up the population. It seems in the past though that when a person of color did frequent, Brookings, people used to be very curious. Rather than show blatant racism, we have often shown ignorance about diverse people. Most of this igorance stems from lack of experience in interaction with other racial groups. Basically we are good people. I feel we do welcome everyone no matter where they come from. Its how you live your experience in Brookings is what really counts.

I think if you are talking to Coach Nagy and Cunningham and your student athlete appears to be a fit for the current needs of the program, I would say he would have good chance of being recruited. I think the adminstration understands what diversity is all about and I dont think we are thinking backwards and excluding any possible student athletes. The adminstration is very serious about the Certification process that is associated with becoming a full fledged member of NCAA Divison I. The certification process insures that SDSU steps up to the academic requirements of D1. These requirements are greater under D1. I think too, the sad part is that there are many more prospects than scholarships, so it gets to be a very selective process, and many of us on this board seem to go wild trying to figure out the next move by Coach Nagy when a scholarship is about to be filled.

I hope this helps, and I have no idea who Dakota Kid is and why he made such an ignorant statement is beyond me. I have not always been a big fan of Coach Nagy, but I feel Coach Nagy has done the best under the circumstances in making the transition from D2 to D1.

I didn't say anything about not being a fan of SDSU. As a graduate living out of state it is harder to turn on the internet and read or listen to the team losing. I can't see how recruiting small town Class C SD is going to change that. It is my opinion that big cities are very important in the early stages of D-1 transition.

To me, quality players are important, not where they come from. I get the whole greater population means it is more LIKELY there will be quality players from more populated areas, but that only works out over time and cannot be applied to individual players.

First of all there is no Class C in South Dakota... Second of all I believe Coach Nagy has a pretty good idea of who is D-I talent and who isn't and if they come from Class B or D-I California it doesn't matter. And 3rd of all when you are transitional and in a state like South Dakota you need to try to get as many of the D-I caliber athletes to come to South Dakota. That allows for local fan support and a better chance of fund raising. I will agree though that now that SDSU is getting out of transitional D-I status maybe we do need to start recruiting the bigger cities... But then again I have always been told take care of business at home first then go on the road and I think that statement should be associated to recruiting in a state like South Dakota also.

P.S. I don't think SDSU should offer every border line D-I Athlete in SD a scholarship but I do think that they should try to limit recruits going out of the state to other mid-majors.

Somebody please enlighten me on what is meant by an "inner-city" player. Talk about dumb terms. There are a ton of players who hail from the inner city of Milwaukee. I'm not sure what sort of player that means, though. There are white kids, hispanic kids, black kids, whatever and all play with with various ranges of ability. How is it any better or worse to recruit someone just because they're from the "inner-city" instead of Wall, SD? Would you rather have Joe Krabbenhof (sp?) or somebody from Milwaukee West High or St. Paul North just because we can tell everyone from they're from the "inner-city"? I have very little recruiting expertise. What little I have comes from my ability to recruit fictitional players on NCAA Football 2008 and I have a hard time doing that right...and I cheat. With that being said, I think a pretty sound recruiting strategy is as follows:

1) Recruit the best possible athletes regardless of where they are from.
2) Evaluate a need in the program for a particular position and maybe lean towards recruiting to fill that need.
3) Recruit the best possible athletes regardless of where the are from.

Am I oversimplifying this? Dakotashooter seems to have a handle on this. Do me a favor and tell me how I'm wrong with my analysis.

YOU ARE RIGHT ON THE MONEY!!!

Always go after the best player possible and that is what the coaches are doing! Sure, everyone loves to hear a story about the "local kid" that leads "their" team to the top but you don't take that kid over a more talented player! If the best player is the local kid then have your cake and eat it to!!!

For me it goes back to having more to offer a recruit now than who we are actually recruiting. We can now offer:

1. A chance to play in the Mid-Con!
2. A balanced schedule.
3. A chance to play at "home" for two years in the conference tournament.
4. A chance to play in the NCAA tournament (next year).
5. A first-class education.
6. A welcoming environment.
7. A fan base that loves basketball and is itching to come back and support a winner!
8. A great community in Brookings.
9. A FANTASTIC COACHING STAFF - I'm a believer!!!
10. MUCH, MUCH MORE!!!

Some of these things have always been here but now there is an opportunity for some serious rewards if the team performs at a high level and without that chance it has been hard to get recruits to get excited about coming to SDSU!

Better days are soon on their way!

You lost me here. Haven't we discussed that number to death? Odd game nights. No conference games. Unfortunate incidents. Can we at least agree that having regular game nights and a conference home will start moving those numbers? Or do we have to use some tortured logic to link those numbers to the early scholarships for Fiegen and White?

Let's talk about how glad we are to have a nearly full squad this year. Or how great it will be to have Beran and Berte back. Or let's discuss Kai Williams' nearly limitless potential. What about Anthony Cordova's upcoming debut? Or how the good stuff I'm hearing about our new point guard, Michael Palarca.
