Flatten was hurt all of last year and if memory serves he played a fair amount as a true-freshman on a solid team.

Flatten is the type of player who his 1 asset is his energy/athleticism similar to Dale Moss. If I remember his playing time wasn't so much good defense as it was lack of focus type of thing, which coming from a true-freshman makes sense.

I thought he played well, I liked when he was on the floor with Daum.... I liked when Daum, Theisen, Flatten and Tellinghusen were on the floor. I thought they were the energy leader

Let's just say defensively we are as bad as you can imagine. In ken poms key defensive metric (defensive efficiency) we are beating 18 teams out of 351. 18 fricken teams and otzelberger is worried about offense??????

      Here are some kenpom#s
      Defensive #s
      3pt % - 37.5% ranked 272nd
      2pt% - 53.7% ranked 306th
def adjusted efficiency 112 ranked 333th
      Def effective fg % 55% ranked 312th

      Offensive #s
      3pt % - 33.9% ranked 214th
      2pt % - 49.6% ranked 150th
offensive adjusted eff 105 ranked 119th
      effective fg % 50.2 ranked 178th

Offensive/Defensive Efficiency – This is the number of points scored or allowed per 100 possessions. There are only about 70 possessions for each team in the average college basketball game, so these numbers are higher that the points-per-game statistics you see used by the media.

Effective field goal percentage is like regular field goal percentage except that it gives 50% more credit for made three-pointers.eFG% = (.5*3FGM + FGM) / FGA

By the way, read the post #58 which has the response to your post and try not to read any more info into the post. Then try to remember a coach telling a player who is leaving the program good riddance. Then put the pat on the back response to your assertion and that the extra time here for Cole Gentry has been a really good time for him. I will agree that Coach Otz was cordial with announcement. However you are a bit naïve to expect me to be happy to see a talented point guard and a good kid move on to another school. Also, I would expect you to respond to your drivel surrounding the coach's contract and the possible transfer of King.
Because we live in a universe where more times than not when someone gets into the dog-house rather than trying to get out of the doghouse they leave. So whenever anyone gets in the doghouse the fans think that they will leave

Not what I was thinking. If I believed King would react in such a manner, I would not be disappointed to see him leave. In the earlier post Old Hare referenced, I also stated that I understood TJ's response regarding King's benching to suggest that the staff believed another player might represent a more favorable matchup relative to Omaha's lineup. TJ explicitly mentioned that King was not benched for disciplinary reasons, although I suppose one could say that a coach deeming a player's offensive performance less than ideal could also be an example of being "in the doghouse."

Lol yikes on the Vernon Adams zinger! In basketball I'm a much more casual fan so I'm more entertained by offense than defense I guess, but either way I'm much for of the opinion that I don't care how we get it done as long as we win.

That being said, this team, this year, is in tatters. I liked watching the transition teams more than I like this. It's often just hard to watch. I'll buy tickets and go, but I'll have a gas mask on. I don't buy for a minute that the cupboard is bare, or this is somehow Nagys fault. I think all we are seeing is a young, inexperienced coach feeling his way through this. The pressure is on, these three years spell the difference between moving up a level eventually, or selling insurance.
I definitely agree talk of buyout contracts are non-sense. Would we fire a coach in his first season under a annual contract renewal option? The coach would have to do something very stupid to have that happen. I dont see Otz replacing Harry Manshiem at State Farm Insurance in Brookings any time soon. Harry I understand is very eligible for retirement, but just has not taken the step. Otz to many of those amazed will
be signing a contract renewal three years from now. Its a matter of getting his program in place. Saying any more would be rehash so will stop here.

Vernon Adams?? A real genuine blast from the past!! I had to do a Wikipedia search to recall who he is. I see he is a QB for
Montreal in the CFL. That little piece of information helps put KEMO post in perspective. I am like thumper in that I follow football more. I think Otz is struggling but see no need of panic. Good post KEMO.

Nothing eliminates panic better than playing oral Roberts. Only 2 wins vs division 1 opponents.

Western Illinois only had 2 Div I wins before we played them.

Our players aren't as good as the players on the other teams. Can't really blame the coach for that. Going to be a challenge to win games, especially on the road. Hopefully Coach Otz can figure something out. SLT won't be any fun if the Jacks aren't there.

IMO one of the biggest issues is not only PG but also SG.

I'm going from more memory so it might not be the most accurate but if you would look at what the Jacks have had in the past.

                            Wolters
                            Carlson

                            Marshall
                            Parks

                            these guys could:
                            1. Distribute
                            2. Get to the rim
                            3. Shoot the Three

I'm not seeing any guards on the roster that can do what those previous four guys could do or even at that level.

Plus Nagy had 0 guards signed for the incoming class and TJ basically had to scramble to piece together what he could with the time he had to bring in some new guys. I'm as disappointed as the next guy with the losses but definitely think he needs time to get his recruits in Brookings. I don't really count this class as his recruits because recruiting is a practice of building relationships and that takes longer than a couple months.

Let the bashing of my post commence

I think that NWHSUandSDSU and others have really hit the nail on the head here: Great guard play is what has made SDSU good for the last five years. Our guards were better than the opponents' guards, both offensively and defensively. That's obviously not the case this year.

I'm super frustrated with the terrible defense (and to think, I used to make light of Omaha's awful defense... now we're worse!) but I also have confidence that Coach Otz will figure things out. It might be next year, but I'd expect things to start moving in the right direction sooner rather than later.

We were spoiled because Coach Nagy had a system that was in place for two decades and we all (certainly myself included) got used to a certain kind of basketball. I'll be interested to see what Coach Otz does with his freshman recruits when they start arriving.
                              Holy nutmeg!

Wow! It seems like everyone quit taking their happy pills over the weekend!

Let's be real about what this game was!

First of all, it was against a team that was 0-3 in the conference that similar to us seems to have potential but it hasn't come through yet. This was a game we needed to win at home.

Second, that first half of basketball was some of the worst I have ever seen a Jackrabbit, or any other team for that matter, play in Frost Arena. The team was flat and played with zero energy. It was going through the motions. I don't give a gosh damn what kind of defense we play. If you play it with that level of intensity you will get crushed! Nobody was getting out to put a hand up in a shooters face. It was like shoot around for Omaha. That is on the players. Zone, man-to-man, trap, or any other. It wouldn't have mattered with that effort. They showed no effort, heart, desire, guts, or whatever term you like. That was the shocking part to me and I'm sure it was a shock to the coaches.

Finally, I am an optimist. Always have been. That team came out for the second half and from the second the ball was put in play until the final buzzer they played with intensity in all areas of the game. That is the type of effort it takes. The players have to want it bad. They did in the second half and damn near came all the way back to get the win. So, who knows what was said at halftime. Maybe nothing. I just know that if they play with that intensity in every game then this team can play with anyone in the Summit League. Maybe they grew up and bunch, the light went on, and they will bring that effort every night and turn this thing around. I hope so.

I loved how in the post game that both Daum and TJ talked about things and asked us fans to hang in there with them as they work through this thing. They deserve that. Giving them criticism is certainly fair too. Let's just keep supporting them and get this thing turned around.

So, it's Monday, let's all take our meds, and get back to a stable place and move forward.
