No one is disputing that Mike Daum is a very good offensive player, which is also obvious to every team we play as shown by the double and sometimes triple teams he faces. To really be competitive, we need to have the players to make them pay for doing that. So far, that hasn't happened.

I would say obviously no to recruiting an effective back court. But to compete in the Summitt league with how down it is this year is a different. We definitely should be able to compete and win. Tj didn't inherit the greatest guards, but he did inherit hands down the best player in the conference

There was some chatter that the reason that Gentry redshirted was due to the slim prospect of playing time last year.

I keep wondering how the team would be doing if we had gone after Coach Billeter instead of a flashy P5 assistant... hopefully Otz is the right solution with a higher upside, but I'm having a hard time seeing it. Best case at this point is suck this year, make noise the next two years, and we are back looking for a new Otz. Then a few years of suck, make noise, and repeat. Such is life as a mid-major.

I'm not giving up on Coach Otz, but we gotta get this ship pointed in the right direction.
I respectfully agree to disagree with some of what you said. Billeter, though having had many D1 assistant jobs, I am very happy we passed on him. I think Otz will work if we give him a three year chance. He inherited a rebuilding job and he is doing the best he can given grad transfers and what have you. Its hard to keep focused when we are not winning so that part of your sentiment, I fully understand. Ryan Miller??? No not him, he is so busy managing his brother Mike affairs to have time focusing on a coaching job. Do you suppose that might explain all his moves around the country?

Most of the time assistants are responsible for recruiting and considering we still have klink on our bench to say the previous staff didn't focus on recruiting is kind of foolish. I do not know if klink handled recruiting or not but I do know recruiting is how a lot of assistants make a name.

Yes that is recruiting, no argument here. I am beginning to wonder if Coach Nagy was looking for another opportunity for a long time. After he got the team back on track from the horrible transition, he might have thought it was a good time to get out of Dodge. Think about the Ball State interview for a minute, had Nagy been the chosen candidate, we would have been talking of his departure a few more a few more years back. The transition, though something he fought for, was no doubt hard on himself and his family. I can remember very vividly, a passionate talk about why SDSU should go D1, at Meadow Creek golf course at an alumni golf outing about 2002, so he knew it was going to be a rough ride and he was up to the challenge and he hope everyone else was too. I wonder how far in advance did Nagy know about the Wright State opportunity? Only he knows, but I suspect he knew before the other guy was let go and recruiting for SDSU was not a big concern in his mind. Not picking on Coach, its just how things work out. This might explain the bare cupboard.

The casual fan may have a bit of a problem this year as the men's team struggles for an identity. If you have talked to anyone at the games this year, defense is likely the most often discussed topic of MBB.

I was a bit baffled by that comment, and don't agree with his thoughts. Case in point look at what Logan Doyle is doing at Northern after not even being to get on the court at SDSU. Monaghan was another good example of a player who didn't get much PT here and then was all-conference in the NSIC.

Going by efficiency as in pts per minutes played (PPM),in the order of highest to lowest ,it goes like Daum at .7 pts per min played,Howell at .48, Dykman (.36),Tellinghuisen and Hess at .34,Orris and Wallace at .33, Theisen at .3 pts per min, everyone else under .3,Flatten at .28 is the highest PPM of those under .3 That's pretty much your offense in the games played so far. These are just a representation of the players who get the most pts for their minutes on the floor, nothing else considered such as who's the best defensive player and what not. Those considerations, other than scoring, are very important too, don't get me wrong. But,if you need some points in a hurry, you might want to look at these figures.Of course, players might cool off or get hot as the season progresses,so you have to re-evaluate these figures from time to time.

Another thing to get more wins,is get more chances to score (more possessions),that's rebounding, taking care of the ball so as not to lose possessions, and get some steals and/or force your opponent into turning the ball over. But defense is probably the key to cover up any shortcomings a team may have and keep them in the game.Hopefully,we'll get it figured out sooner rather than later.

Sorry you feel that way. Someone else mentioned that as well other than me. It's not that crazy of a thought...

also people focus on ppg...honestly that doesn't mean a lot because pace dictates that. You have to look at points given up per possession.

Does anyone kind of think TJ now doesn't want to try man 2 man for even 5 minutes because if it works it would actually look bad for him??

We talk about energy every game ...since it's brought up after every loss do you guys think thats on the coaches or the players for the lack of energy?
You might be misunderstanding the energy part. I have seen way too many times this year when there are 2 players within a step of the offensive player and neither player can get a hand in the face and the offensive player figures that no one is going to throw a body or hand out there and starts shooting. That is the difference of many of the games and then 3-4 minutes of defense in the second half of the Omaha game showed a glimpse of effort. I have been very consistent about who cares what defense is played....lets play some defense. Certainly you have noticed the lethargic stretches of defense. If scoring 80 or 90 points does not satisfy your appetite for scoring, you will be enjoying more losses since the other team is scoring more points yet. If we consider the SLT part of the end game, you will find that 67 is the most scored by the winning SLT championship team since 2010 when Oakland scored 90. I am not suggesting Jim Molinari defense, but show me an EFFECTIVE 1-3-1 or 2-3 with some effort that was referred to by Theisen in the Omaha post game interview. The mentality that defense is not important seems more than short sighted.
