Any team with an alliance to a major conference can be perceived by some recruits as looking "elite." When going on to the next level, it is often all about exposure. Granted, ISU isn't going to win a national championship game, but the players will have to possiblity to be seen nationally on television and perhaps be noticed by scouts who are at games involving Ohio State, Purdue, etc. Just my 2 cents...

Good for SDSU for going after him. The men are doing a much better job of keeping kids in state like the women have done. Getting one kid who is a "high recruit" like Cody or Joe K can go a long way in making sure SDSU, or USD for that matter, gets EVERY kid that they want in the state to stay here to play.
There has always been a feeling for south dakota kids that if you are good and want to make it or be someone you can't do it in state. Its that mind set that is the problem. Stu thinking we are not good enough for a high caliber player only adds to that we aren't good enough mind set. A week later schools get critized for we are not good enough to keep the best players in state, yet the same people say if you want to be something, you have to leave the state to do it. Example, Montana, Their state has a mind set of kids growing up playing football wanting nothing more then to play at either Montana state or the U of Montana.

That is the mind set we should be having. As a state we want kids from here to do well, but damn it, why can they not be able to do well and sucsessful here. I feel thats what needs to change is the atitude and mind set.

Stu is too predictable, too cliche, too hackneyed. Too much of a time-waster.

Agree with goon. When I chose to stay in state for undergrad and then medical school instead of going off to a more "prestigious" east coast school a lot of people felt I was underachieving. Same thing often gets brought up when colleagues from my post-graduate training program find out I'm in Yankton, SD. They wonder out loud why I'm not at someplace "better".

The idea that Cody Larson or those before him must go out-of-state for the best possible experience should be expected to change. SDSU is now a DI program and should be considered a top option for local athletes who have the skills academically and athletically to play DI sports. We should actively pursue every athlete, especially those that some people consider "to good to stay in SD". If we hadn't contacted Cody Larson and said check us out, I would have been very disappointed.

Stu is irrelevant as it pertains to any of these discussions and in my opinion, life in general.

While I agree with what you're saying, there is something to be said for experiencing different things. For about 3 years in High School I wanted to come to SDSU (shocking, I know). I never really seriously considered another school. I love SDSU and I love all the people that I have met here and I have a blast at all of the sporting events that I go to. I don't regret my decision. But there is a small part of me that wishes I would have gone some place far away for college, just to try something new. I'm a pretty shy kid when I'm around people I don't know, so I think it would have been good for me to try something different. It's why I plan on studying abroad and backpacking in Europe after I graduate.

Anyways, I think there is something to be said for Cody going some place different and trying something new. And let's be honest, SEC > Summit. I applaud his choice. I wish I could have watched him for 2 years at SDSU but I can't, so I wish him the best.

I wasn't trying to speak to Cody's decision or anyone elses decision. I was speaking about the attitude that someone MUST leave South Dakota as the opportunity here is not equal to that available somewhere else. I also applaud his choice but its not because I don't think he could have had a great experience in SD, it's because he made the choice.

I see what you're saying and I definitely agree. I love this school, contrary to what most people on here think about me

I do agree with this--and it will be more true in a few yrs after the Jacks make the ncaa tournament.

But if you have a chance to play at Florida(2 recent NCAA Championships), or schools like Ohio St, New Mexico, Mich, Indiana, Wake Forest or Arizona St---it would be awfully tough to pass on that. He's going to play for a coach that has been to 3 National Championship games, winning 2---for everything that's happened to Cody lately, those are some nice options and very tough to pass on.

Im not saying the oppertunity else is not a good option, Im really tired of the mind set. Sam Ostrello is the perfect example, she wanted to come to SDSU more then anything, had another option she felt she could not pass up. We need more kids like that who dream of playing at STATE, and even maybe the U for that matter. I feel if she stayed to go to SDSU many people who have said oh thats to bad, she could have gone off some where bigger or better. I say enough of that mind set. I think it would be best to start with the local media as one place. Also friends and family support to help keep the top students and atheletes in the state.

For the record, what I hear and posted from someone inside the Schooler's about Cody appears to be just a bunch of baloney. Not sure what their intent was. Jealousy maybe? Anyway, I have already apologized to Cadsev in private. I wanted to come on here and apologize as well. I learned my lesson and in the future will not make this mistake again.

To Cadsevs credit, instead of taking me to the woodshed in public (on here) he sent me a private message. That was nice of him.

I don't blame Cody in any way for choosing Florida or anyone else for that matter, even if it he had picked Mount Maty. When I ran a competetive team I always told my guys I would never be upset if they left and played for someone else, no matter what their reason. Same goes for Cody, and others. We have no idea why kids choose where they get their education. It would be darn hard to turn down KU, Michigan, Ohio St, Iowa, Florida, etc for SDSU. Imagine if it were you or your kid. Go get 'em Cody, make us proud!

Goon: You say the media would be a good place to start, and I agree. Although I also find it ironic that there are several people on this board who have commented that if some members of the local media had any talent, they would not be here.

People come from, and go to, and stay at or away from all kinds of places for all kinds of reasons.

I think the media is coming around. The Argus has TV, who is a dedicated and passionate beat writer. KSFY has a weekly SDSU show. Midcontinent shows games. KWSN's coverage is improving. ESPN 99.1's coverage is good. I have had private discussions w/ both Gaskins and Mattik. Gaskins is a little more open minded and dare I say neutral. Mattik....well....you know . The coverage is better, more games on TV, more about the Jacks in the Argus, etc. Heck, even Scheel's is carrying way more SDSU stuff than they ever used to. It's coming around and I think the addition of USD to the Summit will only help w/ regional exposure. I also think Justin Sell's vision of selling the Jacks more to Sioux Falls and the whole state will payoff. I've said for years that SDSU should market itself much better in SF. Dare I say all of this is in large part due to a SUCCESSFUL move to D1? Whaddya say Craig?

We need kids wearing SDSU apparel, going to games, dreaming of playing in Frost or Coughlin when they grow up.

IN MY OPINION, I'd rather stay at SDSU rather than go to Florida. You could help a home state team win the conference and make the big dance. That would help with recruiting and other things. There are other factors such as playing time and closeness to home that would factor in. I don't know how much he'll play at Florida and he must not mind getting away from here. It could be a good thing for him to get away with his situation.
I'm just not a big fan of the SEC. The SEC, USC and OSU are the schools that I look at as not very "student athlete" friendly(or should I say too athlete friendly). That's just my opinion and he has his.
I hope things work out for him.
