  • Re: Cody Larson II....

It is hypocritical for Stu to be so uniformly negative about SDSU, while he lambasts others for attacking kids like Cody Larson.

To finish that blog off with a remark about accepting Larson as a South Dakotan galled me.

Who are the students at SDSU, if not South Dakotans? Nagy? South Dakotan. Stig? South Dakotan. The SDSU fans he called fools? How many of them are South Dakotans?

You can't make a career out of attacking South Dakotans and then turn around and accuse others of the same thing without tainting yourself with the stench of hypocrisy.

you dont care about south dakota kids that go on and play basketball?

No I really dont, just those who play at SDSU. If they are some hot shot, from Sioux Falls with a checked past, then I could care less.

I'm glad Cody found a home with Florida... would I have liked to see him in a Jacks uniform? Of course. But that wasn't gonna happen, wishful thinking aside.

The thing about Stu is he's just like the rest of us in the media... he's got a big mouth and he isn't afraid to use it. I have a big mouth, Mike Henriksen does, hell we ALL do! But that's why we're in the business we're in. Only difference is Stu has a bigger audience (note I didn't say bigger fan base). He's a pretty good writer, but he likes to tweak the masses, ala Jim Rome. Only Rome has the larger audience!

Now that's out of the way, I hope Mr. Larson does well in Florida. I hope he can start with a clean slate and get himself a good education. But am I going to fawn all over him and become a Florida fan? Hell no. Not because I'm not "supporting South Dakota Basketball," but because I'm an SDSU fan and Florida is a potential rival. I think we've had enough South Dakota boys and girls move up to Division I basketball the last few years that we don't have to follow every team blindly out of some "dedication" to our state. After all, do you see all of Florida following Easter Upper Michigan Teacher's College because one of their players is from Miami?

And to the person who posted the neg reps for Nidaros, grow up. If you're gonna ding someone just because you don't like what they say, have some cajones to put your name behind it.
        I am Ed. Fear me.

Good post and rep points for you. I could argue that South Dakota journalists and publications would do better to fawn over those talented athletes who choose to stay in South Dakota and help our institutions reach the levels they are capable of in all divisions. Those who choose to leave and go far away, can receive mentions in the "sports briefs" they deserve in state IMO. And it will now be a pleasure to move onto other threads and close this one (for me, anyway).

I just like the double standard Stu applies.
If SDSU doesn't take a kid from SD, they should have because they should keep local talent in state. But if SDSU goes after players like Larson, they are fools for throwing their hat in the ring(even though the coaches probably knew he was too good to come here).
I guess it's all up to weather Stu thinks the players should go to SDSU or not.

I think Florida will be a good fit for him. I'm not going to throw a High School kids under the bus, people make mistakes. Hopefully, he learns from that and moves on. I just know Miller went to Florida and he did well.

I would have liked to see him go to SDSU to play but I'm not too sad he chose Florida. In SD he would have been held to a higher standard. In the SEC, he's just another athlete.

Although I don't completely agree with it (I'd cheer for some SD kids), I like your honesty.

I would like someone in the know to answer if Cody Larson actually is on scholarship at Florida.

Also, is there any concrete proof that all the said colleges who were supposedly interested in Cody were really interested?

I heard recently, from a very reliable source, something to the contrary.

If what I heard is correct, then Stu is wrong and SDSU was very smart to "throw their hat in the ring" b/c SDSU actually offered to pay for his education. Florida, I believe, is one of the cheaper universities for out-of-state students.

I recently saw Stu at a local establishment. He was sitting w/ other well known locals and openly clapping loud and cheering for the team playing the Twins when they did something well. He's the kid who finds out what annoys other kids and does it ad nauseum, getting a big kick out of it. He's a (very) poor mans Marriotti or Rome. I think he'd rather get someone fired up about one of his articles instead of a pat on the back. It's who he is...and why I rarely read anything he submits or have ever approached him the many times I've been in the same room.

If it was the Tigers that is understandable as he is a Detroit sports fan.

The phrase you are looking for is "Homeless mans Marriotti or Rome." Which is funny because Marriotti is a homeless mans journalist.

Because he has some questions? I know you have to defend your players, so maybe answering the questions for him will put it to rest as well? Or don't answer, I guess I really don't care.

EDIT: I am not trying to be a smart mouth. I just thought a few more facts might quell the swirl of the rumors.

So was it wrong for SDSU fans to hope their was a chance Cody would come to SDSU? I think many felt after he decomitted from Iowa this would be a good situation for him. Aren't you the one who always comes on here preaching we don't need to look outside the region for talent and then when fans get their hopes up that maybe we could land another premiere recruit from the area and all you can do is mock and ridicule. I had heard early on that Florida was making a strong play and had posted as such. Not everyone on here understands how high Cody's ceiling is and how much he was coveted nationally and that it was probably unrealistic to expect he would committ to SDSU, but for you to insinuate that it was so far thetched that Cody might come to SDSU is arrogant. "In SD we eat our own" look in the mirror. I think most on this board and around the state genuinely hope Cody does well at Florida, but don't forget his latest problems were self induced. I guess SDSU is good enough for some of your players, but not others!

I've seen you write this twice now in regards to Cody Larson and I just don't see where you are coming from, nor do I see how this issue only pertains to the state of South Dakota.

There will always be supporters and haters of people who are in the spotlight, and this is prevalent everywhere, not just South Dakota. No matter how well you do something or how good of a person you are, there will be people who try to bring you down regardless.

That being said, in the case of Cody Larson, he hasn't exactly had a career that was free of turmoil, and there are a lot of unanswered questions about his past transgressions. Asking a simple question is not "eating one's own", but rather it is a person lacking the needed details that would help form an informed opinion of the kid.

I personally not only wish Cody well, but will be rooting for him to succeed at Florida (unless he is playing against SDSU of course). At the same time though, I can't blame people for being skeptical of the kid either, nor should every South Dakotan be expected to support the kid in his basketball endeavors, because that is an unrealistic expectation.
