  • Re: Bracketology

I don't want to sound too big for my britches, but I really don't care which bracket this women's teams end up in. Even given all of the success of women's basketball team have had the last 10 years, I think this years team seems to 'dialed in' right now.
Just imagine for a second, if we were in fact in a bracket where we did face UConn and happened to win...I think this year's team believes they can play with anybody, because they can. More accurately, it's not something they believe, it's something they know!
Yes, there are brackets where based on win-losses-tradition-geography there would certainly be better odds of victory, but I'm not going to short change this women's team & coaching staff into doing the impossible. I believe they can go anywhere from here and win...
I am not predicting, I am not laying down any sort of challenge, but just daydream with me for a second, of what it would be like if you were sitting in front of your T.V., or better yet there in person, and you are watching our women cut down the nets in St. Louis in April...
When your at the poker table, you win some hands, you lose some hands but eventually go you have to go 'all in'...I'm all in!

Sweet 16 definitely, Elite 8 maybe, final four doubtful, Champion: almost impossible.

However, I think SDSU could give UConn half of a good game. UConn is just too good for the Jacks to have a shot at winning, but based on surprise factor (that despite all the film, the players would still not take SDSU seriously), and the Jacks' unconventional style of play, they could make things interesting for UConn.

Found this on the NCAA site. A question and answer with Jacki Silar of the NCAA selection committee.

        Q. Like a lot of people I'm trying to
figure out who might be going where. Just the
basic questions you get every year. Are you
going to allow a team to go up or down a seed
make the brackets fit? How much leeway to
you give them from your 1 to 64 order?
JACKI SILAR: It's a good question. We
have a principles and procedures that dictate how
we put teams into the brackets. You know, we
place the teams in the bracket in order that they
        are on the S-curve.
You know, for example, the number one
overall seed would be placed at the regional site
that is geographically closest to their campus, and
we continue through the S curve. Then the second
team would be the closest remaining of the
        regional sites and so on.
It's important to us to get our teams as
close to their campuses as possible for the student
athlete experience, to have the fans available to
travel. We do, yes, have the flexibility in our
principles and procedures to be able to move
teams across the seed line or up and down a seed
line in order to balance the bracket.

The most recent underdog to make it to the Final Four was Minnesota. (Link: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/colle...st-final_x.htm ) They ran into UConn in the Final Four and lost narrowly but it was a feel good story because both McCarville and Whalen weren't highly sought after D1 recruits. I remember watching replays of a press conference before the Final Four game when they played UConn and a reporter asked Geno Auriemma (don't quote me on this, but something similar), "Could you see Whalen as a Husky?" and he replied with a smile, "yeah she's a Husky". You never know, after the NCAA tourney, some big-time coaches might be seeing qualities in some of our players that they want on their team So, as was posted by others, this isn't the men's NCAA tournament. The gap isn't that big, anything can happen!

I think deep down UConn fears SDSU. The Jacks gave Maryland a hefty scare (could have pulled it off if the team was completely healthy) and as far as I'm concerned, no lead is safe, the Jacks came back from 14 down and dominated the last 20 minutes of the Summit championship game against a very underappreciated Oakland team. If the Jacks can get up on UConn early and keep up the intensity for 40 minutes, the Jacks might be one of the few teams that can pull off the major shocker.

Every team in the tourney has earned their way in. Whether it be by winning the conference tourney or based on their performance during the year. Next Saturday a new season starts, the teams that can come together, survive and advance will move on. I'm not making any projections beyond the first round game. I like the Columbus, OH bracket and a 6 seed, we'll find out Monday.

Creme has up a 3/11 bracketology which incorporates games through Wed. PM.

Jacks are back to a #6 seed vs #11 IL St. with a likely 2nd round game vs #3; Ohio St, at Columbus, OH.

Personally, I like this, rather than Duluth GA, as a #4/5. Louisville (just trounced by UConn would likely face LSU at BATON ROUGE, for the priviledge of facing Jacks, should Jacks succeed in knocking off the Big 10 Buckeyes at home.

I think Rabbits could be a nightmare match up for Oklahoma, should Jacks make it that far.

This could be a very good set-up for the Jacks to go beyond sweet 16. And would address if the best team in the Big 10 this year wasn't a Big 10 member.

Less not look past anyone in this tournament, don't want to go through another game where we have to climb out of a 14 pt. defecit, even though we probably could , why put yourself in that position to "have" to.

On the lighter side, i too think we'd give UConn more than they'd bargain for, but first , we have to win games to get that opportunity, but wouldn't it be fun to watch on tv.

                          I'm pretty sure UConn doesn't fear anybody. Just sayin' . . .

Still, I think the Jackrabbit proclivity for 3's from 3 or four different players on the court could possibly make things very interesting for the Huskies . . .

We are a good team, but let's not get ridiculous. UCONN doesn't fear anyone right now.

Both Ohio State and Oklahoma are the kind of teams that have big bodied, athletic post players that could try to pound it inside and get us in foul trouble. That is something that we don't really see in the Summit, and are the type of teams that could give us problems.

Personally, I'd love to see how we match up against Vanderbilt . . . they look like almost another mirror image of SDSU -- small, quick, good outside shooters.
