choosing the money is one thing, but at that level, choosing to win also tends to be an important part of the conversation

I think they've been mentioned on here before for basketball recruiting but O’Neil girls from Bennett County are currently dominating the state track meet. One has one of the top hurdle times in the country. I’d love to see them pick basketball (and maybe track) and SDSU in a few years.Last edited by GoJacks2011; 05-31-2025, 07:41 AM.

More (3?) younger O'Neill's not yet bursting upon the athletic scene - Mom being an SDSU scholarship player, you'd think that roundball would emerge as sport she encourages.
Another thought: South Dakota GBB to D-1 WBB success is rare, particularily aboard the WBB D-1 Mid-Major leader - the 2025-26 roster has several that (I hope) can hurdle that obstacle.

are you saying it is rare in the D1 era for SD high school players to have success playing D1 WBB in general and more so at SDSU?
I would say this is not the final word on that, but it seems a decent way to get a quick idea about it- I went straight to the SDSU WBB 1000 pt scorer club. the list has 44 players in all.
I made no attempt to find hometowns for players that I was not positive about and I am sure there are easily a few that I am leaving out, but I think I am certain about all the players from the D1 era
overall the list has 44
counting ONLY players I personally Know for sure are from SD, I count 15 from SD and I know that there are more that I did not count. so easily over 33% of our 1000 pt scorers come from ONE state, SD.
now I think you are specifying ONLY D1 players, in that case, 20 of the 44 names on the list played during the D1 era
of those 20, ten are from SD. I would say that 10 also includes the 3 players who in my mind are easily the 3 greatest players in the D1 history of the school and probably overall- Macy Miller, Myah Selland, and Jen Warkenthien, as well as 2 other of the top 12 scorers in program history P Burckhard #6 and K Rotert #12
I think there is only one D1 player that I was not positive about, J Sunnarborg and I feel sure she is from SD or MN. if she is native SD then we have at least 16 of 44 overall, and 11 of 21 from the D1 era
OBVIOUSLY there are a LOT of players not on the 1000 pt scorer list and they were still successful players and I can think of more of those off the top of my head also, but I thought this was a pretty good and quick way to get a snapshot of the program as a whole.
as I said to begin, I am not at all positive that I correctly understood the meaning of your post, but IF the point was that it is rare for SD players to have success playing WBB at SDSU, I think this would fairly clearly say otherwise.
as far as players who DO NOT play for the Jacks, most of the D1 players would be for USD I would guess and there have certainly been a few who have gone to bigger schools or schools outside SD. in the entire history of D1 WBB, I would say yes, you are correct. not a huge number of SD players went to play D1 WBB, but since SDSU moved to D1, that has changed quite a bit and more of those players have played at SDSU maybe than at all the other schools combined
anyway, maybe I had the whole thing wrong and you were making a different point. I will leave it at that for now

I agreed that historically there have not been a large number of SD girls playing D1 WBB
but that has changed quite a bit since the Jacks made the move up
since then, there are a lot more SD girls playing D1 and the biggest group of them have played for the Jacks, but there have certainly been those in that time who have played elsewhere
anyway in that I said I was unsure where Jen Sunnarborg was from and ticket offered an answer
that pretty much sums it up.. call it what you will. I guess I would call it discussion
if someone wants to take it further perhaps it needs another thread?
