Vogel played 17 minutes . . . no wonder her stats were down.

(Of course, they have SDSU as a team with 197 minutes and Minnesota with 203 . . . must be the same folks as the clock operators . . . ;D )

Did she seem gimpy to anyone else? I thought I saw her limping into the huddle at one point early in the first half.

      6) If Borton has another program melt-down this year and she is out, AJ may be on the Gophers' wish-list.
That one worries me. But I think Minnesota has some good young players and they have to give her another year or two. I can't imagine Maturi would fire yet another coach this year. They had to borrow money from the academic side of the university to pay off their other fired coaches. Maturi can't afford to fire anybody else for a little while.[/quote]
Borton's buyout is likely chump change compared to what Monson and Munson received for being fired. My hunch is that Maturi would only fire her if she had a bunch of players leave again and the program appeared to be in melt-down mode. In general, the Gophers are the only program that worries me in the near-to-immediate future when it comes to the possibility of AJ leaving SDSU.

        Re: Minnesota

Another thought--it's entirely possible that we'll see Minnesota again this year. I am not convinced that the Gophers are an NCAA tournament team this year.

But with the WNIT expanded . . . and how this game ended . . . can you think of a better way to get Minnesota fans out to a WNIT game than to give them a re-match against the Jackrabbits?

You're right. BUt they still have to come up with like a gajillion dollars to hire new football and basketball coaches. AND they're building a stadium. Unless Borton's program completely implodes (like it did last year) she'll probably be there a couple more mediocre years.

Minnesota's official site now has the story and a link to video of the final 30 seconds.

That's the story link. The link to the video is right above the story:

                From the Minnesota web site:

                On Official Ruling:

Official John Morningstar said the television replays showed the ball had left the South Dakota State player's hand before the red LED lights that surround the backboard glowed. He said, according to the rule book, those LED lights, not the scoreboard clock, are the determining factor. The basket originally was ruled good. The officials conferred around the replay monitor. Morningstar said the three officials could only make their ruling after seeing a second replay from a side angle. "It was closest play I've ever seen," Morningstar said.

He said the officials made only one ruling, after the three had conferred for some time. When asked if one officials hadn't waved the basket off before making the final ruling, offical Ron Applegate said, "I'm not sure we did that."

I was at the game, and watched the end again when I got home on TiVo. I can't remember if they showed it on TV, but he definately turned around and waived off the basket, which sent the arena into a frenzy thinking they had won. Borton was none too happy when AJ got them to look at it again.

Good game by the Jacks. They should have won by a good margin. I was sitting with some Athletic Department staff, one mentioned that this was a three game series, but didn't say if it was 3 for 0 or 2 for 1. I'm guessing 3 for 0 since the Bison supposedly did a 3 for 1 to get the game at Fargo this year. Will be interesting to see if Borton sticks with this, or backs out like some other schools have done to AJ.

Was great seeing this team in person. Lots of talent on the floor. Really showed a lot playing most of the game without Vogel and still handling the Gophs.

Was great to watch the game on TV, looking forward to more Jacks games televised. Can't ask for a better finish as far as suspense and exposure. Curious to see what the Argus has for headlines.

Nothing on ESPN website, regardless of the national media, the locals should have it.

Nice link.  What a bunch of crybabies. The officiating wasn't nearly as bad as the timekeeper. How does 1.1 seconds o off the clock on a tipped inbounds pass  :-? not to mention the 20-30 seconds that the clock didn't run while the ball was in play.  They complained that Courtney travelled every time she touched the ball.  How many times did we have 3 seconds called on us in the first half, you rarely see that called.   In the second half, the one moose they had on the court never left the lane and I don't recall them ever being whistled for it.  :

SDSU beats Minnesota on last-second shot
                            Jackrabbits score 59-58 victory

                            Published: January 14, 2007

MINNEAPOLIS – Maria Boever’s layup as the final horn sounded lifted South Dakota State to a 59-58 win over Minnesota, with both teams waiting several minutes for the officials to review a videotape replay before making the final ruling.

The Gophers had taken a 58-57 lead on two free throws by Ashley Ellis-Milan with 3.5 seconds left. But after Minnesota’s Brittany McCoy knocked a long pass out of bounds, the Jackrabbits got the ball in to Andrea Verdegan, who drew the defense with a baseline drive before a bounce-pass to Boever, who put in the uncontested layup as the horn went off and lights flashed around the backboard.

The Gophers started celebrating while the officials were still huddled over the TV monitor. But after several minutes of review, the officials came up for a discussion before indicating the basket had counted.

It was another win over an established Division One school this season for South Dakota State, which also has beaten Southern California, Virginia, Kansas, Colorado and Alabama. . . . (read more)

Take my word for it there is no way Megan would have ever intentionally bumped into #3 Kelly. She has never been that kind of player. Didn't you see how unselfishly she conducted herself on the floor.. why would you think thawould take place off of the floor. If you actually know Megan at all you would realize she didn't do that intentionally. Actually, if you watched the media conference she said she didn't know she what the press was talking about. If you look at the game replay she keeps walking. My guess is she was so full of emotion she didn't even know she bumped her.

I realize she bumped her but Kelly tends to overact as well. They are making a way bigger deal of this than it really is. If it would have happend to any other player or by someone on their player on our team nothing would be mentioned. We need to support Megan!!!

Lost, then won and back again more than once, the Gophers women's basketball team's 59-58 nonconference loss to South Dakota State at Williams Arena delivered a frantic finish that paled compared to the controversial minutes that followed it.
