I did talk to Cody Larsen on Saturday night. There is a very good chance he will be at SDSU next year. Discussions with coaches and current players have met with approval.

      Let the games begin....

I'm all for giving a kid another chance and with Cody - I think school/academics HAVE to come first. If he can enroll and become a great student (I don't think a GOOD student is going to cut it - we need to expect more of him and all our student athletes) I would be in favor.

I've always been of the mind that you see a person's true character in times of greatest challenge. I would love to see him pull himself up and make the most of an opportunity. (IF we were to give him one and unless we were talking about the Yotes, that is...)

Whoa. That would be huge for SDSU. He wouldn't have to sit out at all correct?.....Because he's technically off the Florida team right now?

I don't think there is a scholarship available though. Hopefully it works out.

I agree with this post. BTW What happened to Cadsev? He hasn't posted much lately.

If he has grown up, which appears that he may have, I would love to have him as he provides an instant impact at a position of need. I assume that he would be a walk-on, atleast for his first season here based on the scholarship numbers and he is in a position of needing to prove himself.

He would know more than anyone regarding him. He lurks around on here but doesn't post as much.

Him = Cody Larson. Okay, I got my fingers crossed and my prejudices all locked up.

No, I don't think Larson would have to sit out, since he hasn't played collegiate basketball this season at all.

I'd be OK with giving him a tryout as a walk-on next year, and holding out the possibility of a schollie in 2014-15 if he proves to be a net asset to the team. I don't know if I'm comfortable throwing a scholarship at him--at least yet. After the "has he learned his lesson and straightened out his life" question, the other big one is what kind of basketball-shape is he in?

He'd come in as a sophomore, but I'm a bit hazy how many years he's got left--usually it's 4 years of eligibility in 5 calendar years, and he's already red-shirted one year at Florida, and then has not played at all this year. Not sure if he has three or only two years of eligibility left. (Not my department!)

I wouldn't turn Larson away if he's turned the corner and begun to straighten out his life in general, certainly, but some degree of caution is warranted. (This is why Nagy is the coach and I'm not, by the way).

It might be that spending a couple of years under the tutelage of Scott Nagy could be the best possible thing that could happen to Larson--from both a personal and from a basketball standpoint.

As in so many things - - - we'll see what happens.

I'll trust those closely involved to make the right choice for the players already signed for next year and the program as a whole. Coach Nagy, Coach Hansen and Coach Klinkefus have certainly done a great job of signing young men that are excellent representatives of SDSU as well as great basketball players the last several years. There has not been a great deal of precedent for upper class men joining Nagy's program recently. Other programs in the Summit have employed the philosophy much more regularly. This may be the right opportunity. Time will tell.

Cody, technically has one year of DI eligibility remaining and would have to sit out a year due to the NCAA transfer rules. Athletes can have the sitout year waived by the NCAA but this requires a successful petition to the NCAA to have that happen. Athletes also do get lost years back upon petition to the NCAA as well (see MN Trevor Mbakwe for exhibit A). He's only played one year of college basketball, had a redshirt year as well and has sat out this season but that doesn't matter for the transfer rule. The only way he'd be able to play right away next fall at the DI level is with a waiver from the NCAA.

I don't see him getting a waiver, if he can last the season as a walk-on/transfer sit out then I'm fine with him being on the team.

You do have to wonder how good he will be though, he red-shirted, played very little and then hasn't played this year, if he has to sit out another year, well then you have to wonder. but he is 6'9"+ and if you can walk and chew gum you won't hurt the team any.

Thanks, Cadsev. I pretend no expertise in NCAA eligibility rules. Doesn't seem right that he'd have to sit out essentially two straight years, but I'm not surprised that this would be the NCAA rule. I'd expect--if this board chatter has any basis in reality--that SDSU would pursue the petition to restore years and the immediate-play waiver, but it's possible that this would require SDSU to extend a scholarship offer.

I don't know if I'm counting right, but it does appear SDSU might have a scholarship to give. I count 12 scholarship players next year--Heemstra, Dykstra, Carlson, White, Prince, Bittle, Devine, Donlan, Severyn, Doyle, Broman, Flatten, and I think the men's limit is 13.

I believe its not the sit out a year, its that you have to be at the new university for a year. , and you forgot Horstman

                                Hortsman would be 13.
