Our very own 6'4" Anthony Cordova (who has virtually no outside shot) has averaged 15 points per game against Benson the last 5 times they've played. Not to mention Benson seems to be in foul trouble every game I watch.

Cordova, I think, gets 'up' for the games against Benson.

Not to mention, AC knows how to leverage taller guys out of position.

If that is the case he should average 15 pts and 10 rebounds per game and be up for every game. He is shorter than everyone he plays.

          Fiegen 25 min
          Cordova 25 min

          Palarca 10 min
          White 18 min

Big difference between knowing and doing. And AC seems to do his best damage against gangly guys like Benson.

FWIW...I saw Benson school Cole Aldrich this year and Aldrich was widely considered (right or wrong) the best bib in CBB or at the very least the best defensive big in CBB.

I think Benson has an NBA future. Not a star, but a solid player, if only after he's been in the league a few years.

He's athletic, has length, has a decent outside jumper and is a great shot blocker. I find it hard to call one of the nations best shot blockers awful on defense. True, he needs to add bulk, but you wonder if he went to a more elite school w/ a better training program if he wouldn't be 10-20 lbs heavier by now? I think an NBA team would find it tough to let a 6'11 guy like Benson get out of the 1st round.

Re: Hot Stove 2010-11: Men's Basketball Edition

                My .02:

                Starters:
The starting 5, like this year, will really vary all year long. Who would've thought Garrett would spend the majority of games coming off the bench this year? Even with the loss of 3 guys we will have quite possibly the deepest, most athletic team ever. My early starting 5:
                PG-Wolters 6'3 So.
                SG-Sargent 6'4 Sr.
                SG-Moss 6'4 Sr.
                PF-Cordova 6'7 Sr.
                PF-Dykstra 6'8 Fr.

                BENCH:
                PG-Palarca 5'9 Jr.
                SG-Griff 6'4 Jr.
                SG-White 6'6 Fr.
                PF-Fiegen 6'7 So.
                PF-Heemstra 6'9 Fr.

                Bigs:
For the first time in the D1 era we will have a (pretty) solid 4 man big man rotation. AC, Fiegen, Dykstra and Heemstra will mean we should have two true bigs on the floor all the time.

                Now or never:
AC really disapointed me this year...bigtime. I hope he realizes that w/ the incoming guys and Fiegen having a year under his belt that if he struggles and shows the laziness he showed this year that he might find himself watching alot of games next to Austin. A "rejuvenated" AC would be huge, especially after losing our best rebounder (Kai).

                Step up:
Will Sarg be able to step up and be our big gun? Will the lack of other long shooters mean it's that much harder for him to get a shot off? Will Wolters take more control, take the ball to the hole more & open up more shots for Sarg and others? I look for Wolters to take on more of a scoring mentality. I thought many times this year he wasn't aggressive enough. I think AC puts up more numbers and I really hope that Sarg gets as many open looks as he did this year. I thought Sarg also wasn't as aggressive as he should be even tho he was often more aggressive than Kai or GC. I also think the Iowa boys will be immediate contributors. Early predictions: Sarg 14ppg, Wolters 14ppg, AC 11ppg, Dykstra 9ppg, Heemstra 7ppg, Moss 5ppg, Palarca 4ppg, White 4ppg, Fiegen 4ppg.

                It's raining.....2's?
The three-point shot was a great weapon for us the last couple of years. Now we have lost a couple of good three-point shooters. Who will replace them? Sarg can nail the 3, no doubt. Wolters showed flashes. Griff has always been a 3-pt shooter but has stuggled since arriving. Rader is a gunner, but will he see the floor? White could be a guy who sees alot of open shots w/ Sarg being face guarded and Wolters going to the hole, and it helps that Chad is 6'6, but is he a reliable 3-pt shooter? Moss is out. I think another 3-pt shooter stepping up is HUGE for next yr.

                Dee-fense!
It's going to have to be better...much, much better. We'll be more athletic, we'll be longer, we'll be deeper, but we'll be slightly less experienced and not as good of shooters. Our dee and rebounding really need to step up.

                Not Oakland, but not USD:
I think we need to cool it on the scheduling. The last couple of years we've gone a little hard. Schedule 2-3 toughs, then give the kids a break. Not sure what the benefit of scheduling a bunch of tough/unwinnable games is. Please tell me how a team gets better playing way over their heads and losing by 30.

                Early odds:
It's gonna be tough to win the league, especially if Benson returns. But my early picks (if Benson stays): If Benson leaves drop OU to 3rd or even 4th.
                1. OU
                2. ORU
                3. IUPUI

He's decent from the FT line too (73%)

If you ever listen to Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio he makes a great point on if they play defense in the NBA. Strictly offensive players in college (think Adam Morrison) can't make it off the end of the bench in the NBA because they get used and abused on the defensive end of the court.

Yes Golden State and selective teams like that don't play defense. And they don't win over 30 games. But the good teams really do play defense. It's just the great players (Kobe, LeBron, D-Wade) sometimes can't be stopped when they are in the zone.

I think people (not just you) are underestimating the loss of Jonathan Jones. The guy was their leader, hands down. Benson may have been their best player, but Jones played 38 minutes every game, handled and distributed the ball with amazing ease. Wright is a very good player, assuming he becomes the PG. But he is looking to score first.

Oral Roberts is a strong favorite, in my mind, even if Benson comes back. OU is 2 or 3. Strictly on the loss of Jones, not to mention the loss of Nelson also. That should make things back to the way things should be in the minds of the ORU people. I'm sure they think OU's 17-1 record this year was a fluke.

Ron said something similar, especially about adding strength. Ron did not sound like Benson would make it in the NBA. So Benson has his critics and soon the ones that count are going to rule his career.

A guy who I rarely see listed in the mix for next year is Brayden Carlson. Any reports on how he competed in practice? I think while he was a bit of a late bloomer he really played well his senior year and with the schoolers in the summer and may just surprise some people by competing for minutes in his redshirt freshman season.

Brayden has seemed to always sneak under the radar when people are talking SDSU basketball. From all accounts I've heard, he's at the same talent level as White & Fiegen and has really impressed people.

No I dont watch much NBA BB. You are over my head here, would love a detail explanation of your point being made. I guess you are suggesting these guys are quite bulky and I have always respected Foggy's point of view, btw.

great points but OU will also have Reggie Hamilton next year, UMKC transfer. He'll be a solid PG for them. Oakland and ORU will be close. Both are interchangeable in my eyes. Next year is wide open.
