Re: Argus Editorial on Nagy
How many of the original D-1 recruits that came in here actually stayed? I dont even remember who were the orignal recruiting class. There have been a series of events that have had a lot of players leave the program for many different reasons but lets look at who we lost. Would have, could have and should have, doesnt count now because you can only play with who is on the roster but to deny that Nagy was not able to recruit is crazy. Maybe it does start with him and getting recruits to stay. Have we had a full recruiting class stay together yet sense the transition started?
I know players can come and go from programs all the time but we have sure had a lot go and the new ones replacing them were not at the same level if you ask me. Our hold overs from D-2 were Geiver, Hokensen, Dejong, Beran, Green, Klienjan I think came in as a D-2 recruit also but didnt play till we were d-1. Moeller transfers which hurt and many people critizied him. Jones got mono and could not play anymore. So we lose are 2 best from D-2 as we start the transition. Green doesnt last, Wenig left before we were D-1. That leaves us starting the transition not well. Beran and holdren did well the first year, that was about it. Our first recruit Holdren had a good freshman year and an injury his second then he trasnfered. If he stayed he could have been special here i think.
The next year Cadwell, Gilbert, Berte, Frias, Heien and a few football players. we all know how well that turned out with Cadwell 2 years then left, Gilbert gone after 1 year. and Berte left but wanted to stay and came back. Fans seemed to really like him. We never saw his full potential if you ask me. Frias was ok but nothing special. Heien transfered in and could actually shoot the 3 but he left to get married and go to grad school so he didnt play the next year as a senior.
The next year Williams and Callahan with Engen, Bilitz and Horby Basset and Yackley. Bilitz and Horby were non factors. Williams and Callahan stayed and showed that they have the talent and can be awesome players. Beran took this year off so we lost some size and experince. Engen is still a work in progress. Basset stayed for 2 years i think then he left. Yackley i beleive only played 1 year and left. not sure everybodies reason that year for leaving.
Then last year Beran came back, Williams played awesome Callahan was not 100% from a hand injury. Other then that we relied again on a lot of young players to fill in. Cordova, Moss, Sargent Plareca and an injuried Cassaday.
Now this year we are playing 1 senior scolarship, who was a walk on. We have a good Jr class who is showing us what they are capable of. The Sophs are starting to make some plays and Sargent has the potential to really break out.
Next year we gain a lot of talent and size and athletic ability, but as freshman they will need to develop to play at the D-1 level. The seniors are going to be really expected to do a lot for us as they should. Its not untill next year have we really had a senior class who was cut out for D-1. We see it in the hustel and effort of the team, its just going to take them to figure it out and put it all together.
Nagy has had some good and some not so good players to work with but every year its like he had to start over will a bunch of new young players. give him some recruits who commit to stay and a full set of assistant coaches and i think you would be able to see Nagy really excel.
Sorry for the long post but I don't think some people understand what the team has gone through with losing players and using guys who werent really D-1 material to fill in. I just looked at stat sheets and used my memory to compile the list of names and how long they played. Im sure others could fill in more detail.
