Re: 2008-09 Season about to Tip off

SMSU sent 3 people to the boards on offense and they went crashing. Surprised no over-the-back calls were made but it was pretty physical under the basket. Not too often a Jacks team gets outrebounded that bad.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

I thought I might share this with you. Here is a quote from a 2006 national championship coach and the coach of a team that the women's team will be playing this year. It might shed some light on exhibition play:

Senior All-American candidates Kristi Toliver and Marissa Coleman are known quantities for the third-ranked Maryland women's basketball team. Today's exhibition game against DT III—which the Terrapins won, 83-72, in front of 1,568 at Comcast Center—was more about the young players that will be surrounding them.

With four minutes left to play, Maryland led by only two points, 68-66. But the Terrapins closed out the game with a 15-6 run.

"I hate the exhibition games that are 40-point blowouts and you're not able to learn anything from it," Frese said. "I thought time and score at the end, we were very poised and we were able to see some positive things at the end."

      -Washington Post article

I think that Coach Nagy used this game to give some players experience and also just to put them in game type situations. For example, the play at the end of the first half that isolated Mack so he could get a shot off, showed one of those situations. Don't forget that SWMS hung strong with NCAA tournament qualifier Drake last year in their exhibition before Drake pulled away late in the game last season. I'm sure Nagy will take some things (such as the 1-14 three point shooting) that need to be worked on and help the team improve on them.

Don't sweat it! I would put more weight on a regular season game any day.

Excellent post but it does very little to change my frustration level as it pertains to this program right now. Last night performance just adds more angst. It could be a very long season.

Not a good start, but good fodder for our friends in Clay County. Lots bb left to play so we can only get better. I think SD hoops made an excellent post. Rep Pts.

Maryland has done something with their program and uses the exhibition games to get younger kids some minutes. SDSU has done nothing the past 5 years and needs exhibition games to build chemistry, work out the kinks, see where they are......almost losing to DWU last year and then struggling through a miserable season....losing to SSU last night doesn't fare well for a program that can ill afford another 5 win season.

BTW....move on from Nate Wolters.....seriously, he's got no other DI offers....it's obvious that he doesn't want to be a Jackrabbit.....you need kids that want to be in the program not those who are leveraging your program against DII schools or a better DI offer. signing day is 8 days away....whats the hang up?

No one in Clay County is surprised at this loss.

On a positive note, the sun came up in the East this morning and it was a beautiful sunrise.

I can't think of any positives to take out of the game last night but let's not put too much stock into it. It is an exhibition game. We have a number of guys that are banged up, so much so that it has been hard for the team to practice on some days. It's not an excuse for the loss, just a fact. Not a fact that bodes well for the year either.

That said, I hope we can all get behind the team and support them. They need that. Let's give them a chance to grow from this and see where it goes. Some will bristle at that suggestion but it is what I intend to do.

Next up: San Jose State, picked to finish fourth in the WAC and with their entire starting lineup back from last year. GO JACKS!
I saw Clint hit the floor early in the game, which seemed to tweak his groin again. Based on my experience, it's going to take quite a while to fully recover.

After watching both the DWU game last year and this one,i thought.....whats the point? If you're not going to work on the things you mentioned, then why bother.

IMO, all that was accomplished was it sets a really bad tone for the season.

                      Nor should they care.

I, for one, was not surprised by the result. The lack of intensity and desire to finish an inferior team off is very discouraging but becoming the norm for Coach Nagy's teams. In how many games did we roll over and stumble to a loss or barely win last year? It was a bunch. Different year same result last night. I didn't see any changes during the off-season that would have compelled be to believe any differently.

Jackmd, I have to take exception to that comment. It's one thing to be frustrated by how things are going but to say that people shouldn't care? That kind of negativity stinks in my opinion.

You have definitely established that you are not happy with things the way they are. Nobody has been a more outspoken critic of Nagy over the last few years. It seems you have an axe to grind and the only thing that will make you happy is a different coach. That is your perogative. But to suggest we shouldn't care? That bothers me.

Nobody wants to turn things around more than Nagy, the coaching staff, and the players themselves. Maybe we could all give them the courtesy of supporting them and giving them a chance to do just that rather than suggesting we not care. Will there be a different result? Who knows. I sure hope so but only time will tell.

I'll probably get crushed for posting this but it is only because I definitely DO CARE!

My comment was directed towards Drake in reference to Clay County home of Vemillion and USD. I personally believe they (USD fans) need to be more worried about what they are doing and less worried about the struggles of our men's program. I think any Jackrabbit fan better care and better be worried.

I have supported Coach Nagy and the men's program in a multitude of ways and will continue to do so. Criticism will remain part of that support. See it as you would like but don't single me out. I know plenty of other very strong supporters of the program who share the same concerns that I have expressed here. When we meet to discuss future support losses like last night are discussed.

Shoving optmisim down my throat doesn't change what I've witnessed on and off the court the last 5 years. I have stated very clearly that Nagy deserved another year with these players and another year to bring in DI recruits with a full slate of scholarships. This year, in my opinion, is the definitive one. We can afford to go backwards from where we are now.

If my opinions offend you please understand that many people share similar opinions. I'm sorry you choose to see me only as a critic when those who know me much better would tell you that there are few people who support SDSU the institution and Jackrabbit athletics more than I do.

Now, I know its not about me and I can handle that. This forum is an excellent place to decompress and it better not be consider as anymore than that. Coaches coach, players play, fans support the program as they see fit. Last nights result was not unexpected by some. We need to see a better effort going forward, thats for sure.

I won't judge the entire season based on one game. Disheartening as it was last night, it was an exhibition game. Now, if this season turns out like everyone one since the transiton began, well then the stuff needs to hit the fan. Plenty of people have made plenty of excuses as to why the men's basketball team hasn't succeeded. Most of us would lose our jobs for the type of performances, both on the court and off, that we've witnessed in the past five years or so. Yes, he's a great person and was a very successful DII coach. But being a great person doesn't equate to job security in my opinion. The other coach that I've been critical of over the years (Stig) has stepped up the on the field performance of his squad, improved recruiting and added quality staff. He's also a great person, but he also figured out that that and a $1 would only get him a double cheeseburger at a certain fast food joint. I'm all for letting the season play out and re-evaluating in March.
I updated my signature for the first time in six years.

Sorry to continue posting on this subject. I just thought the headline from KELO.com was kind of funny. I don't think this loss "shocked" anybody that knows anything about regional sports and the state of our Men's Basketball team. It just happened to shock the clueless f#<?s at KELO.
