Thanks UWM and SDSU. All the stats seem to be about the same. So to assume Sat refs, being in over their heads does not seem to be a reasonable conclusion. It was a fast moving game as most of the SL games are. Refs can make mistakes. Appearances are deceptive sometimes.

There was the one foul call in the second half that pushed the Jacks in one in one, and the ref slipped up on that. I think Cody was shooting a free throw that did not go in, and one of NDSU players who was aware of one and one, grabbed the rebound like it was a ball in play and it turned out it was. I had thought Brad Hewitt to be a little anti SDSU during the Midco games he has been part of, but he was on the ball on this call and said it should be a jump ball according to the rules. Brad was Tom Nieman's color guy. I had no idea who he was until I did a Google, and found out he was an assistant at USD for a couple years and currently is the Junior Varsity coach at USF.

Heemstra traveled. He lifted his pivot foot before he put the ball on the floor. They showed the replay on the Mid-co broadcast and the announcers also said they explained to Nagy during the timeout that he lifted his foot. The call was late which made it look really bad. Hell I thought it was a bad call until I saw the replay.

The questionable travel call I'm assuming you are talking about was the one on Bjorkland. He took about three steps going across the lane after he picked up this dribble.

I'm not arguing that they weren't by the strict definition of the rule travels. I would argue that they aren't always called, especially the Heemstra violation. I thought he traveled when watching it live, Cody Larson also had a couple of moves where his pivot foot left the ground to soon. Watch Braun, he often gets an extra half step (2 full steps instead of the 1 1/2 allowed) when starting and finishing his move. It neither here nor there, things evened out, nobody got hurt and everybody stayed pretty cool headed. As an official that's a pretty good day in a rivalry game.

None of it affected the outcome. NDSU was better that day and is a better team. They have faster players that shoot, pass, dribble and defend better than SDSU's players. I fail to understand how some can't seem to make that connection. When you play a team that has better basketball players on it than you do it is hard to win. Sometimes experience, coaching, luck result in the team with lesser players winning but not often. Nobody expected SDSU to win the conference and go to the NCAA's every year, especially not this year with no true point guard, lack of quickness and strength on defense and a short bench.If our guys compete the way they did against the bison things will be okay and there is a chance the Jackrabbits could pull an upset (or two) in March and be a "Cinderella story". Jacks are not, were not and will not be the favorite to win the Summit this year.

Agree with you Doc...you said it better than I could have. I came away with the exact same feeling. We have a good team, but NDSU is better. We will have a tough time winning up there, although nothing is impossible, and I wouldn't count us out in the tourney. But this should be NDSU's year, and I was happy with the game we gave them in Frost. They were a 4.5 favorite on our floor, and that is the way the game played out (except for free throws we gave Braun in the end as we tried to cut the gap).There is no doubt the difference came in the beginning of the second half, when NDSU got six stops and pulled out a lead that was hard to overcome. We needed to score in that stretch, but we also needed to stop them several times and didn't.

Nagy noted in his comments afterwards that we "have experience too", when the Bison's experience is brought up. But I would note that we lost our top player, one good enough to go to the NBA, and NDSU's Taylor Braun, who is a heck of a player in his own right (and probably this year's MVP of the league) is back. If the situation had been reversed...Wolters still here and Braun gone...we all know it would be a different story.

Now, we just need to keep our heads on straight, and see if we can't keep improving up until tournament time.

Heemstra actually got away with a fairly obvious travel in the same half. I can't remember the situation, but I do remember thinking it was missed.

You are probably right they aren't always called, but they probably should be. Other posters just kept saying he didn't travel when in fact he did. Overall I thought the refs did ok. Couple perplexing things related to the reviews, but nothing I was terribly upset about. They have a darn tough job.

Amen, there have been a number of fans from NDSU and USD, who have stated that without Wolters, SDSU will struggle. This seems to be bearing out.

One reporter said he saw some Nate Wolters in Taylor Braun and Carlson shot that down calling Braun a special player but has nothing on Nate, which is true. Dykstra also seemed very upset. Its going to be interesting on how the team responds on the road against a good Denver team.

Game played out kind of the way I expected. I was hoping the Jackrabbits could win this one on their homecourt, but knew it would be a tough task.

The team just needs to keep it's nose to the grindstone, continue to get better, and hope the ball bounces their way in the tournament.

They are not the favorite, and shouldn't be. Doesn't mean they can't win the tournament.
