So, let me pose a question....can anyone confirm or deny that an arrangement through the Foundation ALREADY exists? With the top three coaches (AJ, Nagy, Stig) that we have and the single year contracts and salaries they are paid, it would seem to me that there may need to be a little something extra that the general public may not know about that's keeping them around (other than the fact that SDSU is awesome). Just some food for thought. I don't know either way, but would not be surprised if something did exist.

Excited for the first "a friend of my first cousin's ex-wife's neighbor heard from the bartender...." response.
Like yourself, I have no inside information source, but if we are to entertain coaching raises and/or multi-year contracts that the BOR can approve, the Foundation is going to have to play a major role in raising the funds. Based on past experience, the BOR seems to be pleased with a "SHOW ME THE MONEY" approach and whether they will do that with multi-year contracts remains to be seen, but I am inclined to believe they will follow the same pattern, if the money from other than state or student fee revenues are present. If they bulk, then they would be going against their past policy of D1 athletics where SDSU was granted permission provided no student fees or other state revenues were involved. No matter how we cut the cake, the Foundation is a role player in this whole matter.

Just think some alum, at UM bought out Tubby's contract. That money no doubt was channeled through the Foundation. So our peers at the D1 level have used their respective foundations a number of times in a number of ways to accompolish their goals, whether to give a coach a raise or to can a multi year coach such as Tubby Smith.

It bothers me when people say things like you have to make a choice between someone who will be a man of character or choose someone that does anything to win. We have a coach that has as solid a moral character as you can find, he cares about academics, he cares about the institution, and he wants to WIN! To me that sounds like we have the right guy. Now let's take care of him. He's earned it. Raise my tickets a couple bucks a game if you have to do it to get the job done.

We all saw the great things the national media said about our coach, our team, and our school. There is an awful lot of that which is a result of the guy running the program. Obviously there is a limit to what can be done but stepping up to take care of the staff is what needs to be done. If he gets the call for a major job then that is a whole different universe.

Wow to think we missed all this by moving up to D1.

First of all no coach is an angel, they all have flaws, even Nagy.

Second we are talking hypotheticals and eliminating people already? Its a hypothetical short list, not a search committee putting together an actual list.

People are saying Nagy is only interviewing for a pay raise, I don't look at it that way, he would have received a pay raise anyways, and it wasn't as if he was the one leaking the story. (I found a tweet from a reporter in Muncie, and I forwarded it to Terry, and he got to the bottom of it, and most of the story was written without a quote from Nagy). So its not as if he was doing a public out cry to get behind a pay raise, more or less just looking at his options, which I think many of us would do if in the same place.

As for if he'd leave for Muncie? I'm not sure, it would have to be a blow him a way deal $300K+ 5 years, solid bonus', solid assistant staff budget, solid recruiting budget, etc. Then I'd be worried. My guess is though Nagy wants to be considered for a better job, and he was getting the reputation that he is a lifer at SDSU so he goes and interviews for a place, thinking his name will probably get brought up, show the consulting firm that was behind it that he is interested, etc.

            Just my theory behind it.

Re: Ball State Interested in Scott Nagy

When the day comes that this policy is changed, I think it will be driven by college coaches contracts at the Division I universities. However I wonder how narrow that policy will be able to be crafted? In other words will this issue be complicated because it is drawn up as a general allowance of multi-year contracting for state employees in general. Or will it be written with an allowance for university faculty and staff? Or can it be written to encompass only coaching positions? This to me seems unlikely.

My point is that eventually this will have to be dealt with. But when it does come to pass, it might open a can of worms.

The evidence cited to throw Margenthaler's character into question is awfully flimsy. I don't think it would hold up in kangeroo court at an unchartered frat house.

Do you have an opinion about the evidence against the freshman reserve Margenthaler accused of trying to punch him and clipping his jaw? Because Margenthaler and his assistants seem to be the only ones who saw it.

Wow, I'm convinced. Some people with a motive to say things went one way, say it went one way. Some people with a motive to say things went another way, say things went another way. (I find the Omaha head coach's phrasing of a statement "“There was no closed-fist punch,” McKenna said" just slightly curious. But hey, there's no way to take a swing at somebody without closing your fist, right?

He dismissed two transfers who weren't fitting in. No coach in the history of college basketball has ever done such a hurtful and unfeeling thing.

He texted a recruit, and then self-reported the incident and got suspended for two games. A crime so heinous that the NCAA changed the rules and now allows that kind of contact.

OK, yeah, I'm totally on your side now. Margenthaler is obviously totally evil. Totally.

As someone who has followed MSU basketball for several years now (seeing as they're one of the top teams in Augie's conference year in and year out), those two players are FAR from the only two players who have been dismissed from Mankato's roster over the past several years. After last season (when they finished 13th out of 14 in the NSIC), he only kept 5-6 players out of a returning 10+, and none of those dismissals were for disciplinary reasons from what I've heard. And that was just last year.

Not a comment on his character as a whole, since I've only seen Margenthaler from the sidelines as a fan of an opposing team, but it definitely seems he's willing to ship out players at the drop of a hat, and not that many have been reported as disciplinary reasons.

FWIW I find your comment more informative than some previous ones on this thread on the subject.

Glad to hear it. It's not often that my comments are well-received on this board, but I at least know a decent amount when it comes to NSIC basketball-related things.

Why the smack on kangaroo courts in unchartered frat houses? Some of us spent a lot of our college years as either defendants, judges or complaintants in such a venue.

When a sore loser is shoving you toward the locker room, it's possible to swing your arms toward him while raising them to protect yourself, but in the second article Margenthaler explicitly accuses Pace of throwing a jab.
