If Scott is looking I can't blame him. Nobody gets into coaching to get rich but if the opportunity to double your salary is out there you have to give it a look. Buy low and sell high and I don't know if his value will ever be higher. Hopefully the job won't be offered or he'll decide to stay with a raise from SDSU.

I'd hate to see him leave, but I'd love to watch him go.

          Wait....what?

Whether he's interested in the position or not, I think he has to do himself justice and at least go interview. I personally hope he stays, but it's always nice to see a Jackrabbit coach move up. (Is Ball State REALLY a move up?)

If the numbers are accurate, unless Ball State is willing to significantly increase the offer over what their outgoing coach was making, then this situation will not take Nagy away from Brookings. Ultimately, it will just provide an opportunity to leverage his salary for next year closer to, or slightly over the $200K mark.

Don't forget that his son is a junior at Brookings High School this year. That and a good veteran team coming back next year should be enough to keep him in Brookings at least for one more year.

First of all I think Nagy has to interview for the job, its part of the profession.

As for is Ball-State a better job? Pay is better, and reports are they are prepared to go $300K+, reports are they are prepared to up the recruiting budget, recruiting is better in that area (more recruits period), and from the sound of things they have a solid team returning and the style fits Nagy's style well.

At the same time they fired their coach this year and they weren't terrible, they haven't made it to the NCAA tournament in over a decade, and clearly haven't been supporting their basketball program. Nagy would have to do something terrible to get fired at SDSU, if they didn't fire him during transition he would have to have multiple under 10 win seasons and off the court issues to get fired. He has a large family, including a high schooler, he has been at SDSU for a long time, has hinted if he left he would like to get closer to his and his wife's family which is in the Chicago/Champaign area, which Muncie is closer, but still a ways.

As for how would I feel if Nagy left? IDK, I'm a huge fan of Nagy's, but I feel confident that Hanson can take the torch and run with it. I think its good for your program when former coaches end up at better jobs and can help with recruiting (you hear every year about how 1 school was full so they tipped off their former school about a recruit).

I am thinking that if Nagy goes so does Hansen and Klink. He would need a staff at BSU. Billy Taylor no doubt will take his staff with him.

If he doesn't look at all, it does not encourage SDSU to up his pay.

This. Also, get used to this being an annual ritual . . . given the state's unwillingness to give multi-year contracts to coaches.

Having said that, I think Nagy's earned a hefty raise at SDSU. And I really would like to see some creativity between SDSU and the Foundation to see if they can't figure out how to offer some kind of multi-year contract (my favorite angle is "marketing/promotions") through the Foundation, which "supplements" the one-year state contract.

A great concept which I would hope they are already looking at. Sell said he was not intimidated by Ball State U finances, a comment that suggests that he has an offer ready and backing from the Foundation.

Yep, pretty much. There are many coaches that interview for a job opening just so they get a pay raise at their current job. Shaka Smart, Brad Stevens or Les Miles. It's a smart business move.

He has to consider serious offers. My expectation is that he keep the process open so SDSU can begin looking for his replacement if he chooses to move on. We don't need to know about it but the players and administration do.

Wolters is gone, the future looks bright but is uncertain and he doesn't have a contract for next year much less 2 or 3 years from now. I'd say he would be crazy not to consider other options even if the consideration is just to generate leverage.

I'd highly doubt Hansen or Klink would turn down the chance to be SDSU's next head coach to be an assistant at Ball-State. Now if neither of them got the Head job, then yeah I'd expect them to leave, and no doubt Nagy would need a staff, but he has been a HC 18 years, and his dad was an assistant coach at Illinois, so I'm sure he has some connections.

Bottom line is that I am happy for Scott Nagy and SDSU to be in this position! It means things are going quite well.

I remember back in the D2 days there was a lot of chatter about Scott leaving. Then D1 and many people wanted to show him the door. He has persevered and done it with class.

I'm glad to hear some of Justin's comments about stepping up to take care of Nagy and his assistants. That is the right thing to do. They've earned it.

My hope is Scott remains here for the rest of his career but it would be equally good if he got the call to make a major move up. We'd get the chance to watch those teams that open those doors.

Life as a Jackrabbit fan has arguably never been better!

Agree 100%. During the darkest times, when he was getting it from all sides Scott never waivered in his committment to SDSU. He did not attack the neysayers. He was then who he is now. A classy guy who cares about the institution and the student athletes who play for him.

Now is the time for the State of South Dakota to gets its act together and allow multi year contracts. I see where Iowa State just resigned Hoiberg for 10 years. Really, and we're still on one year contracts? Scott needs to be rewarded, as does AJ for bringing more attention to the state of South Dakota then a full year of tourist advertising. Ok, maybe that's an exaggeration but when I wear my Bunny gear out west I now get comments from people who know South Dakota State. They know who Nate is and they are well aware of the fact that we are a D1 school with a solid BB program. That is a credit to our two coaches and the student athletes they have been able to bring into the program.
