Blake Yackley, was named to the 2005 Class B all-state team (1st team) by the South Dakota Sportswriters Association.

        http://www.yankton.net/stories/03310...50331005.shtml

"Blake is one of the finest all-around players in the state," said Moore. "He can do it all. (He) defends and scores inside or outside, sees the floor extremely well, rebounds on both ends of the floor and is highly competitive.

"It was so much fun to go into games with him on our side, as we always knew we had a chance to be successful with him and his competitive nature. We will miss watching him compete and his ability to will us to wins," Moore said.  .  .  .

Miles Webb who is a freshman for the Gophers is transferring and is a former teamate of Andre Gilbert at Park Center. Maybe Andre can convince this 6'3 guard to join the Jacks. He would have to sit out a year but Miles was one of the top high school players in the state and nationally ranked. He got lost on a deep bench. Another player to keep an eye on from the Gophers who was a preferred walk on is Ryan Saunders (son of Flip). He has tremendous range and might never see the court at the U of M. Lived in Sioux Falls while Flip coached the Skyforce.

Is today the day when the recruits oficially sign with the Jacks? If so has anyone heard about anyone else other than Bilitz, Yackley, Engen? any word on Hornsby?

It is my understanding the late signing period begins on April 13th. Yackely,Bilitz,Engren have already signed and committed. The other rumored players Cam Hornby, Adam White etc. can't sign until April 13th. Lot's of DI players announcing they are transferring right now but have to sit out a year before being able to play for another DI university.

Mid-Prairie's (Iowa) all-state point guard Travis Kern has decided to attend Truman State. He cited educational opportunities, proxmity to home and comfort level with coaches as reasons. He was also considering SDSU,Cornell,Northwest Missouri State and NDSU. Not sure how aggressive SDSU was with this kid but he was considered one of the top senior point guards in the state of Iowa.

another story about one of our incoming kids, this time from the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

                    Four's company

Four Osceola athletes in four different sports will continue their playing careers in college next fall.

                    BY RICK SHEFCHIK

                    Pioneer Press

David Hogen grew up in Roseau, Minn., where he fell in with the wrong crowd.

                    The basketball crowd.

"There were two groups in Roseau, hockey and basketball," said Hogen, a senior at Osceola (Wis.) High School who also plays football and runs track. "We were like outcasts."

Fortunately, his dad was transferred to the Polaris snowmobile factory in Osceola when Hogen was a freshman. In Osceola, he became part of the most athletically successful senior class in school history.

Four seniors will compete in collegiate sports next school year, including three at NCAA Division I schools. Osceola previously had produced only one Division I athlete.

Hogen, Wisconsin's Division 2 state champion in the 400 meters, received a partial track and field scholarship from the University of Minnesota. Point guard Ashlea Muckenhirn will attend South Dakota State on a full basketball scholarship. Andy Geving, a two-time state champion wrestler at 160 pounds, will wrestle next fall at Columbia University. And three-time all-state hockey player Steph Kendrick has received a partial scholarship from St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn.  .  .  .

Muckenhirn was the leading scorer in the Middle Border Conference, averaging 17.1 points a game in leading her team to a 17-7 record. At South Dakota State, she will play for a school that has an independent schedule that includes Kentucky, Southern California, Oregon State, Purdue and Alabama.

Muckenhirn, who also plays volleyball and runs track, sounds ready to make the jump from the small gyms to the big arenas of the Pacific 10 and Big Ten conferences.

"For any D-I program you're going to travel a lot, and with (SDSU) being independent, even more so. But it's closer to home, so my parents will be able to come and watch my home games."  .  .  .

The four Osceola athletes have benefited from nonconference competition against the bigger Twin Cities schools. But there's something to be said for growing up and playing in a small town, too.

"Everyone in town knows just about everyone else in town," Kendrick said. "A lot of people come to our games."  .  .  .

Not a peep. A few weeks ago Nagy was hinting that he was after one or more KC area athletes but I haven't heard anything lately. I guess we'll know between April 13 and May 18.

                            Bettendorf star considers walk-on route

Bettendorf all-stater Brett Wessels is expected to meet with Iowa men's basketball coach Steve Alford on Sunday to discuss the possibility of walking on at Iowa.

Bettendorf coach Jeff Skillett, a former Iowa player who began as a walk-on for former coach Tom Davis, said that Wessels is looking at a number of possibilities after a stellar senior season, including Division II, Division III and junior college.

"Within the next week he's going to get all his visits done and get that taken care of," Skillett said. "But he's definitely intrigued with the idea of walking on. The big thing will be sitting down and talking to Coach to see what it all entails."

Wessels is a 6-foot-3, 190-pound guard whom Skillett projects as a shooting or point guard in college. His performance in the state tournament helped carry the Bulldogs to the state championship, yet he received no Division I scholarship offers.

"He's a good ball-handler, but I think his natural position would be a two," Skillett said. "He's a real strong kid. He's just really a tough kid. He's not strikingly athletic as far as being able to rise up and do all these dunks, but he's just got such a good understanding for the game. He plays angles so well, and he's real tough guarding people and he rebounds well."

I'm assuming Nagy is aware of the Wessels kid.  Must not have wanted to offer a scholarship at his position.  Perhaps the assumption is naive.  Anyone who has access to the coaching staff ought to drop his name.
