    Re: 2005 Recruits`

The date is in april i believe. There was talk that Yackley was going to be non-scholarship for us (due to a family trust or something) would that open up another scholarship slot to bring in three more players?

Yackley is a walk on-"technically". Hornby Bilitz and Engen would be the scholarship players, leaving two more scholarships available. If I understand everything correctly.

Another guard the Jacks were looking at one time was Mid-Prairie's (Iowa) Travis Kern who is having a good year and may be candidate for Mr Basketball in Iowa.

          • West Lutheran High School’s boys basketball squad ended its regular home season Feb. 22 with a 65-39 victory over Minnetonka Christian Academy.

West Lutheran’s Bob Bilitz achieved a milestone by scoring 17 points and surpassing 1,000 career points. He also had 11 rebounds and two blocks.

The game was stopped when Bilitz scored his 1,000th point and coach Steve Jensen presented him with the game ball.

Bilitz has signed to play basketball at South Dakota State University next fall.

The West Warriors will meet Southwest Christian Thursday, March 3, in the subsection tournament. West Lutheran is located in Plymouth.

            Re: 2005 Recruits`

This may be the Jacks recruit out of Missouri that was alluded too. He is listed as 6'4 on his team roster. Pretty good coach as his son plays for the Bulls (Kirk Hinrich). Listed as #23 on the top 25 players in Missouri.

            23. Adam White, North Kansas City

Adam White is a 6'2" solidly built guard with good athleticism for North Kansas City and their coach Jim Hinrich (Kirk's dad). Their team emerged and made sectionals led by Adam and his older brother Jason (who is currently playing at Lindenwood in St. Charles). He has a solid all around game and is usually playing at the point this year. He can score in a variety of ways, as a solid outside shooter and posting up smaller guards. White's strength is slashing to the basket, he is an adept finisher and creates many chances for his teammates.

As a junior White earned all-conference honors in the Suburban Middle Eight conference

White is receiving low major Division I looks, and would be a nice fit at many Division II programs.

Even though NKC was blown out, it shouldn’t take away from the final performance of one of the city’s most underrated players, 6-4 WG Adam White. White, who went for 20, has attracted offers from Evansville and South Dakota State and has several other mid-majors looking. His junior teammates Brandon Coleman a 6-2 PG/WG and Corey Fennix a 6-6 jumping jack combo forward could eventually be division one prospects as well.

Maybe if we get Adam his teamates will follow the next year. It would be nice to get esstablished in a recruiting ground like Kansas City where we have relationships with coaches and area players who can help us bring in other players. Minneapolis is another place in relative proximity to Brookings that has a lot of talent and only one DI school in the state.

                  Re: 2005 Recruits`

I got a chance to see 2005 Jack recruit Bob Bilitz play last night in the Sectional Tournament. His team led by double digits most of the night and then collapsed in the final 3 minutes and lost by two after a barrage of 3 pointers by New Life Academy their opponent. Bob at 6'10 was 7 inches taller than anyone else on the court  dominated the boards and scored 25 points. He has a very nice spot up jump shot, shoots free throws well, runs the court and without the ball well and is not selfish looking for teamates constantly. I have heard how thin our two 6'10 recruits are and expected Bob to be frail and that is not the case. He certainly has plenty of room to bulk up but has a good frame and will benefit from the Jacks conditioning program. At 6'10 he dunks with ease and is athletic for a young guy his size. I think if his teammates had gotten him the ball more in the low block he could have utilized his height more, but it seems all about the 3 point shot in high school. I think a lot of these young tall kids come with about the same amount of ability out of high school. Once in college it's how much they want to improve and push themselves and the quality of coaching. I would think Andy Cone is good at working with the big guys as I felt he improved a lot from the time he first arrived in Brookings. The player who led the comeback and can flat out shoot the longball is a 6'3 junior named Max Holmgren. He has tough arrogance about him that good players have and was not about to let his team lose. He finished with 31 points and maybe a kid we want to watch for the future. Fun game to watch! Look forward to seeing Bob with the Jacks next year. If we do redshirt him for a year look out as he will be ready to go. Anxious to see him match up against players his size and ability. One final point, Bob has a tremendous wing span that enables him to block a lot of shots. He may not be done growing either!

Coach Johnston was on the KWSN show this afternoon and indicated they have a verbal from another perimiter player out of Wisconsin. He hopes to have another committment by the April signing date and maybe two. Getting ready to go to all the area Basketball tournaments.

I know there's a couple more that have committed but i can't think of their names. Doesn't look like anyone of them will be reshirted as we'll be a little thin next year.

                      Losses:
                      Shannon
                      Sarita

                      Comments:
Starting 5 looks pretty good. Bench may need some help. Corrie showed some good flashes this season. Maybe Courtney will gain some strength and quickness this off-season. Don't know much about Hegge. She seems to be a lot like her sister, willing to do whatever is best for the team. Should have another successful year, but not as successful as this year.

                        Women's Basketball Signees

Four high school standouts have signed national letters of intent indicating they will enroll at South Dakota State University in the fall of 2005 and compete for the Jackrabbit women's basketball program.

Signing during the November signing period were:
                        • Natalie Carda (pronounced SAR-da), 6-1 post, Beresford, S.D.;
                        • Ashlea Muckenhirn, 5-8 guard, Osceola, Wis.;
                        • Stacie Oistad, 6-0 forward, Sartell, Minn.; and
                        • Jennifer Warkenthien (pronounced WAR-ken-teen), 6-0 post, Willow Lake, S.D.

Carda has received Class A all-state recognition three times heading into her senior season at Beresford High School. An honorable mention all-state selection in 2002 and second-team pick in 2003, she earned first-team honors in 2004 and was chosen for the Sioux Falls Argus Leader Elite Five. She averaged 20.4 points, 11 rebounds and 4.2 steals per game, while shooting 57.8 percent from the field last season. The state winner of the Wendy's High School Heisman Award earlier this fall, Carda's career totals include 1,080 points and 697 rebounds. A member of the National Honor Society, she also has received all-state honors in volleyball and has placed in the discus twice at the Class A state track and field meet.

Muckenhirn will join the Jackrabbits after earning second-team all-state honors from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and third-team honors from the Wisconsin Associated Press in 2004. The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram Player of the Year, Muckenhirn led the Middle Border Conference in scoring (17.8 ppg), rebounding (7.3 rpg) and free throw percentage (86.6 percent). Her career totals have included 928 points, 457 rebounds and 188 assists, while leading her Osceola High School team to a 63-8 record over three seasons. She also has been an all-conference performer in track and field and volleyball, while being selected to the National Honor Society.

Oistad has been a starter since the eighth grade at Sartell High School. A three-time all-Central Lakes Conference selection and honorable mention Class AAA all-state pick in 2004, she averaged 13.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game her junior season. Oistad’s career totals include 891 points, 509 rebounds, 200 assists and 94 blocked shots. A member of the National Honor Society, she also has competed in volleyball during her prep career.

Warkenthien has been a two-time Class B all-state selection at Willow Lake High School, earning second-team honors in 2003 and first-team recognition in 2004. She earned a spot on the Sioux Falls Argus Leader Second Five last season after shooting 53 percent from the field and averaging 23 points and 12. 6 rebounds per game as Willow Lake advanced to the state championship game. A member of the National Honor Society, Warkenthien enters her senior season with 1,283 career points, 756 rebounds and 89 blocked shots, while setting single-season records for scoring (551 points) and rebounding (303 rebounds) last season. She also holds the school high jump record at 5 feet, 3 inches and has placed in the Class B state track and field meet four years in a row, including a runner-up finish in the high jump as a freshman.

South Dakota State, coached by Aaron Johnston, is in its first season of NCAA Division I competition. The Jackrabbits compiled an 86-19 record the past three seasons as they qualified for three consecutive NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearances. SDSU claimed the 2003 national title, finishing the season with a 32-3 record. The Jackrabbits ended the 2003-04 season with a 26-7 record.

Freshmen coming in have always impacted the women's team in the past. I would expect the same from next years class as well.

Most players end their high school careers without getting to play in a single state tournament game.

Oshkosh West seniors Jessie Wilcox and Morgan Meier will end their careers not knowing any other ending to their season.

The Wildcats qualified for their fourth consecutive Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association girls basketball state tournament, and Wilcox and Meier have been there every step of the way.  .  .  .

Both Meier and Wilcox will play in college next season. Wilcox has signed with Division I Northern Illinois University, while Meier has received offers from Division I South Dakota State University and Division II St. Cloud State University in Minnesota.

Their time at West will come to an end sometime this weekend, with either a postseason loss (they have a 17-1 record in the playoffs) or a third straight state championship.  .  .  .
