I don't think it is just by pure number but you also have a higher number of extrememly passionate fans. The ones that aren't affraid to stand up and get others around them to cheer a little louder. That is what USD is really lacking. The student section barely even shows up anymore. Most think once the Summit League seasons start that it will dramtically change. I am not so sure I buy that. Anyway sorry to hijak your thread for a few moments.

Thanks for posting and welcome to the board.

Both of those players are very special. But Wolters and Dykstra have the potential to be just as special, if not more. I think White and Carlson have a ton of upside, remember they are both freshman with 3 more years of eligibility remaining.

No matter what, winning is the most important thing for pumping up the crowd, and we have 17 wins right now with at least 4 games remaining. We're making progress and it will getting better.

Clint's 3 Ball and Moss' dunks are going to be replaced by a talented team that will compete for conference championships and berths in March Madness. I think that the fans will gladly make that trade.

I think that is an overconfident statement. I am not convinced we will see remarkable improvement from this year unless we can sign a post player for next year.

I've been trying not to think about it. Dale and Clint will be tough to replace and I don't see anybody on the roster ready to fill their role right now. I see some potential in a couple of guys but not the same level of ability of talent as Clint and Dale. Now, I'm not saying you expect anyone to be like another player and I'm not saying either of them were the players they are 2 years ago.

I like our new recruits but I don't think any of them are expected to contribute right away unless forced to do so and with no RS on Dyskstra or Heemstra they may be asked to fill in right away.

So, I'm going to keep my focus on the rest of this year and try not to worry about next year until next year.

Best way to improve the crowd is improve the product. The women are struggling so that hurts the men have potential like we have never had but still young. After the men win the summit tourny that will bring the fans out like they use too.

Personally I would love to see more double headers. I know we do saturdays and they talk about going to a mirror schedule, but the double headers are great fun and create bigger crowds on avg.

I will agree that Moss's dunks will be tough to replace but I don't know about Clint. We have several other players that can shoot the 3. Clint is more known for it because he is a senior and he's been part of a short handed team. That means more PT, more shots and more face time for the fans. I hope you don't think I'm putting Clint down. He's a great 3-point shooter but we have other shooters. We have 6 players that shoot between .422 and .471 from 3 point land. Clint is at .422. He shoots more so it's tougher to keep that high of a % but they are there. I wouldn't take Carlson or Dykstra over Clint even though they %'s are higher.

I know its a long way off and this team has a lot left to play, but I have been thinking about the team next year what to expect. This is what I see.

                    Starters.
                    PG Wolters
                    SG Griff
                    SF White
                    PF Dysktra
                    PF Fiegen

thats not a shabby starting line up next year. a lot of talent and shooters and some height.

If the crowd cant get excited for that, what would it take. We would be 1 Senior 2 Jr 2 soph starting lineup. experience for a team to grow for more then 1 year, like when we relied on Kai and Garret.

I'm not much of a basketball mind, but my only concern is that we don't seem to have the same type of shooter on the roster as Clint. Griff and White (Dykstra and Carlson too) are great shooters and have similar success percentage wise, but seem to be more of a set shot (slower release, not as much elevation) type shooter rather than a pure shooter like Clint. I can't see either of them coming off of screens, or creating their own shot on the perimeter as Clint does. We'll miss that part of his game more than anything IMO.

I'm wondering if Carlson or White will grow into that role...or if maybe we don't need that aspect within our offense as much? Maybe we can find a recruit yet that can fill that role? Or maybe our recruit from Illinois is that type of player? I don't think it's unheard of to have a freshmen be able to do that. Oakland seemed to find just this type of player with Bader and he's playing a significant role for them this year as a freshmen.

The SDSU student section is better for the men's games than the women's games but they're not very good either. I think the reserved seats are loyal but the students and walk-up crowds just aren't there.

I disagree. We have seen this team improve from last year to the current season, and I don't see how the team couldn't improve going into next year. Dykstra and Heemestra will be coming into their 2nd year after a summer of working on their games at the college level. Nate will continue to improve (scary thought) as will White, Fiegen, Carlson, and the rest of the team.

                            Sorry Filbert, I can't resist

                            wait a minute--a new idea!

A new course, introduction to crowd dynamics--make it a psychology course, maybe a "special topics" or something, held dec. 28-dec. 31.

                            Course description:
This is a lab-based course, studying the behavior of people in large groups when attending indoor sporting events. There will be an orientation lecture which will include common chants, cheers, and songs used, their desired effects upon the crowd, and then small-group discussions of impromptu and crowd-generated chants and activities which might arise and amuse in such situations.

                            There will be eight labs:
                            December 28,
                            december 29,
                            december 30,
                            december 31,
                            january 14,
                            january 16,
                            february 15,
                            february 18,
all in frost arena. The labs are expected to last two hours, but students should be aware that the labs may run long.

Grading will be based primarily on creativity, good humor, and aural cohesiveness and intensity presented by the students during the labs.

Extra credit will be given for jackrabbit wins.

Admission to this course limited to 3,000 students. Attendance to all labs is mandatory.

Maybe this should be in the "crowd" thread.
                            I love this idea!!!!

As I tend to do, let's take this too far:

Create Crowd Dynamics 101, 201, 301, and 401 so there is some continuity year to year. Limit enrollment for each to 50 students for a total of 200. They have reserved seats in the visiting endline section next to the band (after the band is moved).

Also, additional extra credit labs will be located at the Sioux Falls Arena during the Summit tournament (301 and 401 can drink beer!).

Why hasn't any school done this already?

I don't see that, however I agree with JackMD, let's reschedule this argument for after this season. I am optimistic that this team can compete for a Summit League Title.

I know the players are easily replaced I'm referring to the "crowd" which is what we're suppose to be talking about. Those two can be replaced in the sense of talent and winning but Dale's high flying acts that get 500 youtube hits in a day, probably can't be replaced and having him definitely increases fans in the seats.
