Amen! I grabbed one of the cheerleaders the other night and told her that. I'm going to re-emphasize it tonight, and I'm going to try to get them to split up, 1/2 facing each side. Will have to wait and see what happens. Will probably be a smaller crowd tonight, which won't help, but that is the way it is.

      Re: Crowd

While we're on the general subject, I have another Humble Suggestion:

Pre-game, change the order that The Yellow And Blue and Ring The Bells are played at the time the team comes onto the court just before the game, thus:

      1) Play the Yellow and Blue first -- it's a slower song, but gets people's attention. PUT THE WORDS UP ON THE SCOREBOARDS!
      2) Go IMMEDIATELY from the end of Y&B into State Cadence. Do it right. Do it fast.
      3) Immediately at the end of State Cadence, State Sensations and the Rabbit begin vigorously ringing cowbells--five or ten seconds would be all you need. This is intended to get the crowd going at full-blast.
      4) Then, launch into Ring The Bells. Don't play it twice, play it once, but hit it HARD AND FAST. Keep the words up on the scoreboard! For maximum impact, have the team hit the floor at the first notes of Ring The Bells. GIVE THE RABBIT AND THE CHEERLEADERS COWBELLS TO RING!!!

Tweaking can be done with the above, of course, but this gives it a bit more of an air of "spectacle" that the (utterly lame) pre-game videos just simply don't. My complaint with the videos is that they tend to bring everything to a screeching halt. You want everybody to be involved and active--not sitting back and either watching the scoreboard or cowering from the earbleed-producing music (or both). If you must, play the pre-game video before this team-entrance sequence.

The goal is to get the crowd entertained and fired up about the game, isn't it?

Hey, ideas? I got lots of them. Some of them might even be good!

Great ideas, every time I've talked to Mr. Sell he has said if you have a good idea send him an e-mail. I think this would be a good one for you to contact him with.

          Re: Crowd

My suggestion isn't really a crowd thing but it's somewhat close, so I'll add it to this thread:

The Junior Jacks should not be standing at the end of the line when the starters are announced. I don't have a problem with the Junior Jacks, lord knows that would have been awesome for me when I was 5 years old, but I think they should introduce them, have them high five all the players, and then move them off to the sideline. That way the players can have a proper introduction and actually get pumped up a little bit.

            Re: Crowd

I agree the crowd is far too quiet. One thing that does always amaze me, however, and this goes towards football to, is how quickly fans turn on each other! How many posts over and over talk of how great a fan they are and others are not?! Far too many in my opinion. It reminds of retired pro athelets talking about how much greater they are than the ones today.
Ask the players if they care if everyone stands. I would assume they don't as when the boys are at girls games and the girls are at boys games they never stand except for a tshirt! Watch and see if I am right. I always watch that and I am shocked at how they act when they sit there in the SW corner and seemingly sleep.
I agree with all the posts that point out the changes in seating at Frost since the early days, when I was a student, and now. None in my opinion helped improve the crowd involvement. The suggestions made by some about changes with the songs and cheerleaders I couldn't agree more with. The cheerleaders are usually a downer but in their defense, they have very little access to the student section except at timeouts and even then they cant get close to the students. I love the idea of moving the band to the other end! If they put more reserved on the upper southside I would favor returning courtside ends to bleachers and getting some of the vocal students to the floor.
The Junior Jacks thing is a nothing to me. If the players need to do without them there to get pumped up we need other players. I don't really care one way or the other if they are there or not but let's not be crazy here. I would vote for the players being there for the National Anthem and then leaving and having a big entrance at the 2min mark that could be maintained to the start of the game.
One final note, Nagy is right about us winning, it will bring crowds. He could certainly help to get the crowd pumped a little himself, however. Even on the best play he is NEVER happy! I watched Wisc and Ohio State this weekend and watched Matta and Ryan clap and act enthused when their players made a good play! Why can't he EVER do that! Maybe clapping or giving a high five to a player once in a while just may be noticed by the crowd and feed on itself. Small thing I know.
Everything that has been discussed has, in my opinion, gone a long way to chip away at the crowd over the years. It will come back and has been showing signs of that already happening. Great discussion to all!

Please be careful when you "grab" the cheerleaders - we don't want to have to start a "Free #1 Fan Defense Fund" The regular season may be nearly over, but we need you in Sioux Falls !

Now this is funny, but Jack#1 has his wife generally with him so I suspect he grabbed one of the guys as they are generally in charge.

Seems like the guy who uses the handle Roy was one of the great cheerleaders at SDSU, that is if he is the one I am thinking of. Seems like about 1957 through 1963, we had some real great cheerleaders, some who were male, who really worked the crowd, mainly the student side in the Old barn. Now everyone seems kind of shy about getting out there and working up the crowd. I think we need to bury that t shirt cannon and start working the crowd doing cheers during time out. Going to a game is so different now days, with all these promotions and what not that have to be worked in. These promotions are making the crowd into a passive NBA type crowd. We could just as well add an organist.

I gave up on reading this because it was all put together, but I did catch this.

I was thinking the same thing a while back. Fans feed off and take on characteristics of the coach and how he/she is acting. It would help if he got excited and gave a fist pump or whatever. Maybe jumped up with some excitement. It would help the team out as well.

At tonights game, when the cheerleaders weren't even there, and they played the 3 minute pre-recorded cheer on the video board, I thought of this thread and laughed out loud.

I didn't think it was possible to make a cheer anymore pathetic, but then they put it on tape with terrible audio in an empty arena and played it for God and 1500 of us poor saps to see.

Wait...wait...wait...didn't we have a big discussion how Nagy was too emotional on the sidelines earlier in the season? Now you are trying to say that he isn't emotional enough?

Sometimes the "Blame it on Nagy" crowd really has to reach to find things. I would put the blame of the lazy crowd on the lazy crowd. Stop wasting your energy b*&$%ing at the officials and cheer on the team.

I think its time to start looking for a pipe organ and an organist. Then we finally have arrived in NBA land. After that I guess the next big decision is where to put the pipe organ. The Organist will have to know how to play the charge chant.

                          Dumb post.

I'm a Nagy supporter and always have been. I must have missed the memo on the "too emotional" discussion earlier in the season so I'm not sure about that. I was just saying that I agreed that sometimes fans will follow with how a coach acts. If he's showing excitement in that SDSU needs a big stop on defense, the crowd may stand up and cheer or feel the urgency in the team.

However, I get your point in that if the crowd is lazy then it's a lazy crowd, but I think the coach can help.

AWESOME.. you know nothing about why this was done, but you probably don't even care. so i won't waste either of our time.

The problems you all state about the cheer team mostly comes from things the athletic Dept. won't let happen or mandates.

                              I'm done.
