    Re: Crowd

For awhile during the transition I know it was hard for students to keep track of because games were at different days at times. So constantly check to see if there is a home game. Now confrence is the same day and time at home so that should help. I spent a lot of time in the HPER for classes and such and kept up with the schedule rather well, but many students I don't think have much desire to even go. No reason there can not be 2k for students everygame.

Do other programs and arenas have problems with needing to have standing and sitting sections put in place to try to get a little unity for both groups.

      Re: Crowd

One thing that I think would help with student attendance and their participation during the games - and maybe I'm dead wrong or just cranky - but I think we need to get non-students out of the student section. I looked over tonight and behind the UMKC bench (outside of their empty fan section...sigh) I bet I could have counted at least two dozen fans that were anywhere from 30-60 years old. Never mind the dozen or so kids that were 12 or under.

If I'm a student, I don't feel comfortable standing, yelling, blocking a view, being rowdy, trying to intimidate, etc., if I'm surrounded by people the age (or older) of my parents. Or worse yet, still in elementary school. I want to go to the game and sit around other students, not random fans that thought they found the best GA seat in the gym. Winter break, etc., that is a different story. But while classes are in session, I don't care if the section is half empty. I think they need to have ushers at those steps only allowing students in the section. There are plenty of other really decent GA seats that those folks can sit in on any given night.

Maybe it wouldn't help...but I don't see how it could hurt.

I agree with everything except the bolded part. Sight lines are terrible for most GA seats, especially when the east and west upper bleachers aren't pulled out. The more I think about it, the more I think we need to put priority on some sort of new seating arrangement in Frost.

Lastly, somebody give the Jackrabbit a cowbell for crying out loud. Let him ring the crap out of that thing before the game, leading the team on the court, during timeouts, whenever he can and game ins't in play. I hate to say it, but people need some sort of prompt to cheer (whether that's a dunk, a big three, a bad call, or a signal from cheerleaders).

Dale had some really good dunks last night...if that can't get the student section to get off their butts, not sure what will. Fail!

Sad thing is, the student section is maybe 80% full when the 30-60 year olds and kids are sitting there. With out them, the east side about the visitors bench would look empty. But i agree, the site lines are terrbile for the GA bleacher seats. They use to have ushers (ROTC) at every entrance to each section.

one more thing, IMHO, I think the visiting fan section should be moved to the top 2 or 3 rows of the lower level reserved east side chairbacks directily opposite of the SDSU parent section. I believe that would encourage more students to be more directly involved. I would still have a police office behind the visitors bench to keep things in control, but the 3 reserved rows are useless when empty. The only visiting team who uses them is NDSU.

I don't mind the visiting fans section where it is. I know this won't factor next year but during doubleheaders, the women's teams normally sits in there. I know some teams have a few parents and it's nice to let them be by their team/kids. Otherwise some students lean over the rail and yell(used to ring cow bells) the whole game. I like the yelling but it will normally turn to bad language and other things. I'm a big supporter of being loud but I think it should be more during the game.
The day the students fill "their" section, they should enforce who sits there. When that section is bare, it's sad. If the students want to stand and yell the whole game, they can do that. If you don't like that they do that, move to where you are supposed to sit.

Conference rule. Can't do much about it.

                      Re: Crowd

Last year SDSU averaged 2,204 fans per home game. This year we averaged 2,502. A decent improvement, although last year had several weather conflicts.

For conference home games, we averaged 3,055 fans which is 2nd in the conference behind Oral Roberts at 3,239.

We noticed last night that not even a third of the students even stand for the school song. Maybe it is time to bring the old traditions back, Frosh are required to know the song and recite it if a upper class member request it. .

Somewhere between Friday night and 8am Saturday I completely lost my voice! I stood in the student section and thought to myself how pathetic this is. Only twice did we do a "DEFENSE" chant and nobody except a handful of us stood and cheered for the "SDSU fight Jacks fight" chant. I graduated in December and haven't been to many games this semester, I didn't realize how pathetic the student section has become. It has honestly become more of a social event for a majority of the student section, even the other SA's don't really pay attention or cheer. Then again the outcome of both games was never really in doubt. I was one of those students though that waited as a freshman for 5 hours before the WNIT games and remember how unbelievable loud Frost can be. Thursday night was somewhat similiar, but we have a long ways to go until teams hate playing at Frost.

The reason for this, IMHO (and y'all have heard this before) is that the cheerleaders just start State Cadence (which is the name of the 1-2-3-4 Tell The People Who You're For chant) TOO DAMN SLOWLY!!! It's supposed to energize the crowd, not be a lullabye! If they can't speed up State Cadence and do it the way it's supposed to be done, then it should be turned over to the band. At least they (the ones who're in the Pride, anyway) will have an idea how it's supposed to sound).

Generally, the cheerleaders do cheers way, way too slowly for the students--when a students do a Defense! chant it seems like it's almost twice as fast as when the cheerleaders do it. Heck, when I start a cheer, it's faster than when the cheerleaders do it!

I also renew a call to move the band down to the other end of Frost next to the opponents' bench. It's a nasty, mean, evil thing to do--rather out of character for SDSU, I'll admit. Oakland does it.

Good suggestion. Since some of those seats are already sold as season tickets, they may have to implement this sugguestion next year. Otherwise a very good suggestion. I grew up in the era when 3.2 beer was king in Brookings no cocktails for sale and the BB games were the only event going on most Saturday nights, but the student body stood for the yellow and blue and ring the bell was kind of a backseat song not played as often. Maybe we should move the games back to the barn, it might teach these youngins a lesson, but I doubt that. Not when one of them had the nerve to write to Argus about sub zero weather and classes. The Cheerleaders do need to take the initiative, and not be wall flowers.
