COUGFANcom: You touched on this but will Washington State football end up at 79 scholies, or at 85, somewhere between 85 and the new 105 limit, and are there also going to be some partial scholies: What's the fully-funded number for this year's fiscal budget that's currently being worked on?
Honestly, because we're going to more of a pool approach versus number of scholarships until we know how many in-state, how many out-of-state, what type of academic or other aid they'll get, what type of revenue sharing we're going to do vs. outright scholarships … That's a hard question to answer right now.
I think what we're really leaning in on is providing football more money than they've ever had for scholarships. Now how that ends up at the end of the day, how they choose to break it out relative to number of scholarships, that is yet to be seen, But it's not because the financial investment isn't there, and not because it isn't increasing. It's more a product of how they'll choose as a sport, and a coaching staff, to really allocate those resources.
COUGFANcom: The Cougar Collective and others have written the regents asking that the Cougar Athletics budget be restored to the $85 million level of the previous fiscal year. Is that realistic? And is it even realistic to stay at the current $74 million level without additional cuts even there?
I think, as you know, we've been pretty public about how the $74 million definitely is challenging to put forth a high-level Division I athletic program and to really not cut back on the student services and to continue to invest in staffing and everything that's a priority.
We feel like the mid-80s range, that $85 million, is absolutely where we need to be as an athletic program going forward. We feel like short-term, we're doing well in the lower amount while we let some dust settle, so to speak.
But I think that it's an important crossroads for Washington State University as a whole right now to really determine what do they want from their athletic program and how does that look funding-wise. And that's everything -- evaluating things we can generate and do as a department -- but also really what the university could or should be investing in athletics as part of the overall strategic -- and support the overall strategic -- mission. And I think that's the important kind of cross-section for me: I don't feel like it should be athletics vs. academics or other areas of the program.
Overall, it's Washington State University as a whole and really making some strategic decisions of what the priorities are and then what can help best support that. We feel we can help support increasing enrollment and increasing retention and student experience (and) all of those sorts of things that make Washington State University a phenomenal place. But at the end of the day, students are coming here for tremendous academic experiences, too.
Finding a way to really make some long term, strategic decisions on all of that and then how the dust settles on the finances is really important. I think $85 million is an important place for us to land.
All of our new Pac-12 members are only growing their budgets right now and need to … they've found money right now with joining the Pac-12 relative to the conference distribution anticipated to be higher than they currently have. So, we need to do our part and find additional revenue streams as well.
