Southern displaying depth on defensive line

The one thing that's becoming evident quickly -- and, keep in mind, there have been only five practices -- is that the Southern defensive line is developing into a force.

The group is deeper, faster and in better shape than last season at this time, and perhaps in a long time. There's a focus and a palpable sense of energy that wasn't there a year ago. All told, this could be SU's best defensive front since the dominant one of 1999 (though still not in that class).

Southern Notebook: Kick returns progressing well

      By JOSEPH SCHIEFELBEIN

      Advocate sportswriter

Southern has taken the time the last few days to solidify its kickoff returns, and the head man has been pleased with the work so far.

The strongest of Pete Richardson's teams have been well-rounded, with great special teams. In going 12-1 last season, the Jaguars scored twice on kickoff returns, including Ezra Landry's jaunt to jump-start the season, and twice on punt returns, including Lenny Williams' crucial game-winner against Texas Southern.

Jones doing what it takes to succeed at center

If you want to know why Brandon Jones is such a good center for Southern's football team, why he's overcame so much and why he's the consummate team leader, then all you have to know is this:

The guy didn't miss an offseason workout and he's having to make all the snaps in practice, so he's pretty much in the best shape of his life, yet he's focusing on getting in better game shape.

"You have a little more weight on you with the pads," Jones said. "Being in playing shape is all about being in shape in the fourth quarter. Late in the game, you have to stick it out." Read the story

Jaguars offense flexes muscles at scrimmage

Southern's first scrimmage of preseason camp packed plenty of powerful pops.

Power running. Solid hitting. Thuds. Whacks. Grunts.

As expected, the Jaguars worked the running game extensively during an 82-play workout at A.W. Mumford Stadium.

"We're developing an attitude of being a physical, tough football team with a little hard-nosed edge to us," offensive coordinator David Oliver said. "Just because we spread people out and use multiple formations, that doesn't mean we can't be tough. We stressed that point, and you saw some of that today." Read the story

            Saulsby gives O-line boost

The Southern University offensive line got a boost Sunday afternoon when senior guard Thomas Saulsby returned to practice.

Saulsby had missed all of last week after hyperextending his left knee early in preseason camp.

"It's going to help," Southern head coach Pete Richardson said. "It's going to be a slow process to try to get him back and get that leg stable. Hopefully, that will add some depth over there." His return helps two spots: center and guard. Sophomore Lance Gerard had worked at right guard in Saulsby's absence. Now, he can return to center, backing and giving a rest to junior Brandon Jones. And Gerard can also play guard, giving Southern depth because senior Nick Price left the team after the first practice and sophomore Seth Rooks is ineligible.

Wallace bridging gap in Southern secondary

Southern has taken all kinds of transfers in Pete Richardson's 12 seasons. There were plenty of guys looking to get out of bad situations, from doghouses to a simple lack of playing time. Guys who had traveled the back roads of college football, and some who had gotten off the road and were all but forgotten.

But one coming to graduate school? Not until Gabe Wallace came.

And the timing -- for Wallace and Southern -- couldn't have been better. Wallace, who came to Baton Rouge in July after graduating from Mississippi State in May, immediately fills the loss of Jarmaul George at free safety. On review, the NCAA threw out the ACT score (approved last season) for George, making last season's Southwestern Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year ineligible for this season.

Tailback Steel adds strength to Southern backfield

His first name fits his body. Steel.

Perhaps appropriately enough, Steel is written on the back of his jersey instead of his last name, Adams.

Clearly, the benefits of having a bodybuilder for a father have been sown into Southern tailback Steel Adams, who carries a rock-solid 225 pounds over his 6-foot-2 frame.

"He's a big power back with speed that we haven't had in the last couple years," Southern head coach Pete Richardson said. Adams, a junior, transferred from Southern Miss a year ago, after two carries for 11 yards in 2002. Unhappy with a fulltime move to fullback, a position which, at the start of preseason camp, had only two plays in the Golden Eagles playbook, he came to SU instead.

                    Ricks shines in scrimmage

Just like any quarterback would, Southern's Thomas Ricks liked what he heard when Jaguars head coach Pete Richardson said Wednesday's scrimmage would highlight the passing game.

Richardson was true to his word, and Ricks didn't let the opportunity go by unnoticed.

After shaking off an interception on the second snap of the scrimmage -- that SU's Denard Duhart returned for a touchdown -- Ricks was dominant as the Jaguars went through a 2-hour scrimmage at A.W. Mumford Stadium. Facing the second-team defense for the most part, Ricks completed 22 of 32 passes for 522 yards and six touchdowns, with all six scoring strikes going to different receivers.

                      Thierry ready to contribute

As freshmen go, Jacobi Thierry doesn't fit the bill.
After all, he's been on Southern University's campus for two school years. There's no need for orientation meetings or to buy a campus map.

Redshirted as a true freshman in 2002, Thierry missed all of last season, getting a medical redshirt, after having right shoulder surgery. So, he's still listed as a freshman.

Healthy again, Thierry will be expected to contribute immediately when the Jaguars have their home and season opener against McNeese State on Sept. 4.

                        Frederick's roles small, vital

How rarely used is a fullback in Southern's spread offense? The designation has been pulled from the Jaguars roster. Mark Frederick, for his senior season, is simply a running back, an RB, no longer an FB. You have to be patient. You have to be laid-back. And Frederick, who has 10 carries and one catch in three seasons, has both qualities in ample quantities. "He's a great kid. I think he's probably the team comedian," Southern offensive coordinator David Oliver said. "He keeps everyone light around him, but at the same time when it's time to go to work, he really buckles it up and does a solid job for us. He's a fun kid to be around." Read the story

                            Focus drives SU to opener

Practice will look much the same for Southern University's football team as all the periods in the previous two-plus weeks.

Then again, this is game week, with the Jaguars readying for the home and season opener against McNeese State at 7 p.m. Saturday. Change will be subtle, but sure. "The mental focus of playing an opponent and the challenge of that as opposed to lining up against the same people day in and day out will be stimulating," offensive coordinator David Oliver said. "We expect so see a little more hop in their step (today)."

                              SU looks for momentum

The season opener is only one game. Not make or break.

                              Right?

To an extent. Then again, there's no denying the fact Southern has gotten some serious momentum from winning the first one. Last season's 12-1 mark, with Southwestern Athletic Conference and black college national titles, began with Ezra Landry's electrifying kickoff return for a touchdown to spark a 29-0 win over Mississippi Valley State.

                                SU, Grambling to rule SWAC

Alcorn State http://www.2theadvocate.com/stories/090104/sou_swacprev001.shtml"]wants a breakthrough[/url] so bad the Braves emblazoned their preseason prospectus with the word.

Well, while that's true enough for Alcorn, that sentiment is also the feeling of the entire Eastern Division.

Louisiana powers Southern and Grambling have dominated the Southwestern Athletic Conference for the last seven seasons. Southern wrested the label of the team of the 1990s from Jackson State, by winning the SWAC crown in 1997, '98 and '99. Then Grambling started the new decade with three straight SWAC titles before the Jaguars returned to dominance with Bayou Classic, SWAC and black college national titles in a 12-1 run in 2003.
