    Re: 2006 Recruits

Reading the Fargo Forum Chris Wellenstein commented on the "diehard" football environment in Fargo. They do have that advantage right now and that is the major reason we are losing some of these recruits. Clearly, there is a trend towards improving the FB environment at SDSU which can only help.

Re: recruiting connections. Keep in mind that RTR is the home of four recent Jack greats: Shane and Troy Bouman, Darren Baartman and Melissa Pater. Those connections should be valuable for attracting talent to SDSU.

The Showing Blitz web site gives a list of verbal commitments for fall 06. I don't know how they get their information and they only show a few so far. Another page on their websites invites athletes to submit their own information. I don't think schools could submit. But they do have one listed for SDSU. You can go to the site below. It is updated regularly this time of year.

Take this website (and all scouting websites) for what thier worth.  Yes, a school cannot comment until they have actual signed LOI.  Plus a verbal is a verbal that is at the whim of a high school senior, junior and even a soph.  Not to mention the whim of some parents.

Melissa Pater was not a product of RTR. She had a Holland, Minnesota address, but played high school ball at Southwest Christian in Edgerton and followed the likes of Deb Van Klei and Gina Mouw to SDSU from there.

Very true, but you don't see a lot of players back out once they have made a decision and made a verbal committment. Nothing binding granted, but pretty good chance that student athlete will end up at the institution he has verbaled too, especially this late in the game..

                  Re: 2006 Recruits

Jacks seem to be recruiting Iowa very hard again this year. The following players have indicated they will be taking visits to SDSU in January:

Ben Evans-Iowa City High 6'0 165 wr/db 4A second team offensive. Also visiting Iowa and NWMS. SDSU coaches have told him they would like him to play defense which is his preference.

                  Ben Lamack-Cedar Rapids Kennedy 6'5 240 TE 1st team offense 4A

                  Mike O'Connell-Iowa City Regina 6'1 185 4.6 40 Safety

Austin Frain-Treynor Linebacker 6'1 190 lists SDSU as his favorite.

Now that we have Antonio Thompson committing to SDSU would be great to see Quincy Christie from Pierre committ to the Jacks.

Thanks for the correction. I did play high school sports at Southwest Christain. I did however live very close to R-T-R. Southwest Christian and R-T-R have had some very heated battles over the years in basketball... girls and boys. I hate to say it, but R-T-R beat Southwest to go to State my sophmore year. I should also mention Daynica Drake and Grethe Bornhoff played basketball and volleyball for R-T-R and then went on to play volleyball at SDSU.

Here are some other Seniors from South Dakota who I wonder if the Jacks are considering based on their size, success on the field etc:

Tyler Duffy 5'11 190 RB Brookings
Casey Grimsrud 6'4 210 QB Sisseton
                        Ryan Issacson 6'4 210 FB/LB O'Gorman
                        Tony Lesnar 6'0 205 RB/LB Milbank
Ryan McNight 6'4 260 OT/DT Sioux Falls Washington
Chris Patron 6'1 232 NT Sioux Falls Washington
                        Jon Ryan 6'4 181 WR/FS Watertown

                          Ryan Isaacson verbaled to Augie.

The word in Pierre this week was that Quincy Christie will visit USD on Saturday and has cancelled his scheduled visit on Sunday to SDSU. He wants to run track and play football. NDSU is still in the run. Minnesota is making a track only run at him.

Would hate to lose another Pierre standout to NDSU. NDSU has two sprinters (Marques Johnson and Allen Burrell) that also play football.

I have griped before about how SDSU's football program is doing something to discourage participation in track and that's a shame (climbing up on my soapbox now). There are athletes who want to try both who will not give SDSU a look for that reason. Schools like USC, Michigan and other powers in football seem to have it figured out...just look at their track rosters.
