    Re: 2006 Recruits

On Minnesota Preps they listed the top 30 football players in Minnesota. #18 is Mike Wubbena a 5'7 160lb running back from Fairmont. It lists South Dakota State as offering a scholarship. I was thinking this guy was a wrestler and wonder if the scholarship offer was football or wrestling? Anybody have any insight?

What a great atmosphere at Coughlin Alumni on Saturday night. Great game over 10,000 in attendence,Pride playing and outdoor football. I know it was senior day and imagine along with many prospective students were many student athletes considering playing for the Jacks.

Agreed, thought it was a good attendance and they crowd was into the game. We need more work with the crowd, but it's been the best fans since the NDSU game last year.

Word is Anthony Thompson of Roosevelt who in my IMHO is the best football player and wrestler in the state is heading to Iowa State. Good picture of him running the ball against Aberdeen Central last night. I would expect at 6'3 230 he will play linebacker in college.

Looks like SDSU has interest in a NG from Sioux City East. Here are highlights from a Sioux City Journal story:

                http://www.siouxcityjournal.com/arti...ac00118ea1.txt

East senior's strength training pays off
By Steven Allspach Journal sports writer

He leaves the clanging of weight room metal ringing in the ears of opposing quarterbacks.

East High senior Alex Tomes is one of the strongest teenage powerlifters in Iowa and he's successfully translated that strength to the football field.

The Journal's Metro Athlete of the Week set a state record of 519 pounds in the dead lift competition in the 242-pound teenage class in the latest USA Powerlifting State Championships held in Sioux City so it's no wonder the 6-foot-3, 245-pounder consistently overpowers would-be blockers on the football field.

"I've spent a lot of time in the weight room trying to get stronger, but at the same time I think that work has also helped me increase my speed and quickness.'' says Tomes. "The coaches switched me from defensive end to nose quard toward the end of last season and it seems like that's the position for me.''

                And how.

Many times fighting off double-team blocking, Tomes has still put extreme heat on quarterbacks, collecting 13 sacks to share the state leadership among Class 4A players.

"Playing in the middle I can concentrate more on the people in front of me. At end you have to always worry about a play going outside of you,'' says Tomes.

He's also made 48 total tackles to rank second on the team behind the 52 stops by linebacker Marshall Tuttle. The 13 sacks total a minus 65 yards and he's also recovered a fumble. Twenty-two of his tackles are unassisted. . . .

"Defense is what I do best, that's my favorite,'' says Tomes. "I like offense, too, but mostly I just block. . . .

"Alex has probably been our most consistent player defensively all season,'' says East Coach Steve Zediker. "He's awfully strong but he's probably the second fastest player (to Canady) on our team, too.

"He works extremely hard in the weight room. Let's put it this way, he comes to play.''

Tomes, who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.7 seconds, is a natural, just like his older sister, Laura, a state high jump and long jump champ at East who now excels at volleyball at the University of Oklahoma. . . .

Along with the deadlift category, Alex also had a 318-pound bench press and 427-pound squat in the state powerlifting competition.

Alex, like his sister, aspires to earn a Division I scholarship.

"I've had letters from several schools and I've talked to the recruiters at Iowa State and South Dakota State (Division I-AA), but I've also visited Iowa and Northern Iowa on my own and I like those two programs, too,'' said Alex.

Tomes plans to major in biology in college and hopes eventually to study veterinary medicine. . . .

                Go State! ;D

If the Jacks indeed jump from 42 to 57 scholarships we are going to see a lot of new faces and talent. I wonder if Stig will continue to focus primarily on high school players or mix in some DIA transfers and junior college players. We have to be pleased with the production the last 2 years from junior college players James Epps and Mike James.

If we add 15 additional scholarships for next season you would almost think we would have to add some Jr. College kids/I-A transfers just for the sake of balance between the classes.

I agree. We are losing a lot of seniors in the defensive backfield and that will need to be addressed. Some of the underclassmen will step up but we might want to balance that with some experience.

James and Epps are very special since they both prepped at private high school in Kansas City. Doug McFadden, former assistant coach, who has since moved on to Fort Hays told me when I asked if he had been involved in their recruiting, told me that both did not like their D2 and NAIA offers they got out of high school and chose the JUCO route. Upon their visit to SDSU, they both felt that this is where they wanted to be. Both have very high GPA's I been told. They are very different from the typical JUCO, who has went that route to fix his academics.

I would not disagree that there are not more JUCO's out there with similar backgrounds. Kansas JUCO system seem to produce an abundance of football talent. Those from the 1970's remember Phil Engle, whose son is now an MD. We need to be careful in what we seek in terms of a balance between student and athlete, but we can find them and with a higher classification than D2, it might be easier.

                              Recruiting article from Fargo newspaper.

                              http://www.in-forum.com/articles/ind...section=Sports

The Border Marker isn’t the only bone of contention when North Dakota State and South Dakota State play football. The two also fight over high school prospects.

The Jackrabbits have been fending off NDSU recruiting attacks in their own backyard in recent years. It hasn’t been easy, said SDSU head coach John Stiegelmeier, because of NDSU’s scholarship advantage.

“We’ve been outbid by NDSU on every kid we’ve bid against them,” Stiegelmeier said.

Said NDSU head coach Craig Bohl: “He can say what he wants. John is a good guy.”

NDSU, which hosts the Jackrabbits on Saturday night, has six South Dakotans on its roster, five of them linemen. Junior linebacker Brett Itterman is from Aberdeen.

Junior Justin Frick from Yankton is one of the Great West Football Conference’s top defensive tackles. Senior Tim Popowski from Brookings and junior Justin Buckwalter from Lake Preston are the starting right guard and tackle, respectively. Freshmen Gerry Ebel from Yankton and Ryan Schuttloffel from Sioux Falls are redshirt offensive linemen.

NDSU currently offers 63 full rides. The Jackrabbits are at 42.

“Part of recruiting is the scholarship level,” Stiegelmeier said. “I’ll talk to a guy and if they offer a full and we offer three-fourths – I’m a dad and have children who go to school.”

Popowski said he picked NDSU because he wanted to leave Brookings and experience another city. He said there was pressure from high school coaches in Brookings to steer him toward SDSU.

“I felt a lot of pressure from a lot of people,” Popowski said.

That wasn’t the case with Ebel and Frick. Both say the location of Yankton, 130 miles south of Brookings, probably had something to do with it. Like Popowski, Frick said he wanted to get away from South Dakota, and people understood that.

“They didn’t pressure me to stay,” Frick said. “Yankton isn’t that close to SDSU.”

Ebel said he was impressed with NDSU when he came to the school on his recruiting visit. He gave the Bison a verbal commitment in early November.

“I was looking at the offer, got anxious and decided to come here,” Ebel said.

Bohl said NDSU will continue to recruit South Dakota in the coming years. It’s another reason why Saturday’s game carries importance.

“It’s important for us to have a strong presence in South Dakota,” Bohl said.

I did not realize that there are that many South Dakota kids on the NDSU roster. Sounds like we definitely have to jump to 57 scholarships next year. We cannot continue this fight with one hand tied behind our back. That is asking just too much of our coaching staff and football players. Then once we get to 57 scholarships we will need to step up our recruiting in ND as well as other neighboring states. We will need to remind the Bison that "what goes around comes around." Let's do it to them this weekend . Go Jacks
