Re: What kind of a Season will 2013 be?

I sent an email to Coach Stig and he admitted that his players are human and made errors, and last year the special teams were down, but hopes to recover this season and do much better. Also he mentioned that Shannon Moore has handled special teams for the past five years.
I doubt very much that Dom Wright has or does have an ego problem. The field looked much different from his angle and he might have misjudged the speed of defensive special teams. I recall the Cole, last name escapes me, from Georgia was very quick in getting down field on KO's. Our opponents might possibly been as quick or quicker. I don't know, and I don't have time to review game films. Its more to it than stepping back or what ever.

It is so fundamental that if a player can't understand that, I'd begin questioning the mental abilities of some of the athletes we are recruiting. Remember, this happened on more than one occasion.
Bull crap. I am sure there is a spare pair of pads somewhere and then you can prove me wrong.

I recall a story of a young MN Viking that fielded a punt on the 6yd line and returned it for a TD. As he was congratulated by his team on the sideline Bud Grant walked up and said " nice job, next time you field a punt inside the 10 though you'll be cut". Plain and simple.

Seriously? What is your deal today? You need to just walk away from this. You are so wrong on this issue it's not even funny and instead of trying to prove yourself right you just attack anyone who opposes your view by saying, "Put some pads on and prove me wrong or I'm sure you could do a better job." That's really weak.

Again, I ask, do you care to rebut my argument about planting your feet on the 10 yard line and not backing up to catch a punt?

I just go to the game to help cheer the guys on. I don't go there making a critical analysis of everything they do. Like how many steps to take or not take. Means nothing to me, but if our players make mistakes, does it help to tear them apart and give our brilliant critical analysis? And who is the weak one when that is done? I believe loyalty is worth something, oh that's right we do have a right to our own opinion, but heaven help our players if they make mistakes.

Please explain to me how the quickness of the punting team has anything to do with keeping your feet firmly planted on the 10 yard line and not moving backwards to field a punt. Fair catch signal anyone?

I turned down an offer to become the Pope and I was a great punt returner on the play ground in grade school.

Our punt return game has been horrible the last few years and basically cost us the game in Kansas and repeatedly puts our defense (yes defense) in some very compromised positions. Not only is there a problem with fielding punts inside the 10 but I think and even bigger problem with NOT FIELDING OR FAIRCATCHING PUNTS BETWEEN THE 10-30 yard line. If the return man can safely fair catch or field and return a punt he has to do so when its at this area on the field.

When you field a punt or fair catch it inside the 10 or 5 yard line or fail to fair catch or field a punt between the 10-20 yard line you put your offense in a position of protection which often leads to a conservative offensive approach and a quick possession. This allows field position to swing if favor of the opponent and puts our defense back on the field that much sooner. Football is way more about field position and time of possession than most people recognize.

Zach Zenner bailed out the punt team on numerous occasions last year with huge runs from the LOS. I don't think that is happening with as much frequency again this year. I hope it does but last year was special.

Punt return game needs to improve and I'm confident the coaches at SDSU understand that.

Now this is what I call a critical but thoughtful post. I agree with the points you have made. Its detailed but not over simplified nor do you mention that your children are smarter than our student athletes. I did send Coach Stig a email this morning, and was totally surprised that he replied so quickly. I would rather not post it here, but he did mention that special teams and how important they are and that they worked hard on getting things right. He did mention that things did fall off last year and that they were working on improvement for this coming season. Shannon Moore, he said has been the special teams coordinator for the last five years. I personally don't think we can blame anyone individual for last years snapfoos. football is a team sport. Lets hope for a great season this fall.

Yikes. Didn't mean to set off a big thing with a comment about special teams... Wasn't intending to be critical of players or coaches. Just one area we could improve relatively easily over last year (in my untrained mind).

I don't think you set off a big thing. One poster can't stand being called out for being wrong and continues to jump down everyone's throats for being critical of coaches and or players. He must not have had his morning coffee.

It is so complicated to figure out, that apparently it takes an astrophysics degree to figure out when and when not to attempt to return a punt. I guess I have to go back to school or read a book about that one.

One more thing. Football IS a team sport, so when you field a punt inside the 5 yard line and get immediately tackled, when you get to the sideline make sure you tell the coaches to spread some blame onto your teammates for the poor decision.

Yeah maybe its because my kids are not smarter than the student athletes that have been recruited recently. Its a shame they don't have your brains. They would do much better on KO returns.
