      That's exciting!

It's not the Mid-Con Basketball Tourney but it is a good thing that we are getting to host events such as this. The more we show that we can host events like this and do a great job, the more willing they will be to let us host these events!

Great job to whomever is responsible for hooking these things up!

City bids to host Mid-Con tourneys
Basketball events would be in '09-10

Whether called the Mid-Continent Conference or the Summit League, Sioux Falls is in the running to host its men's and women's basketball tournaments in 2009 and 2010.

Sioux Falls Sports Authority chairman Kevin Lampe said that his group submitted a bid for the two-year contract on Wednesday - one day before the deadline - to the Chicago-based NCAA Division I conference that is reportedly changing its name next week and definitely bringing South Dakota State into the fold on July 1.

Although he declined to disclose specific dollar amounts, Lampe, a vice president at Sanford Health, believes that the bid is competitive based on previous tournaments.

The 2008 event will be held in Tulsa, Okla., for the fourth consecutive year.

"We think we're in good shape, but you just really don't know until the conference gets a chance to look at all the bids they might have and start their process," said Lampe, whose first-year organization worked with the Arena, SDSU, mayor Dave Munson, the Skyforce and the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau on the bid.

"We believe if we can get them here to Sioux Falls to look at us that they'll believe what we believe and that it'd be an outstanding tournament." . . . (read more)

Is the tournament awarded to the lowest bid or do they put into factors like, city size, facilities, city support and so on.

I would guess it is awarded to the highest bidder.

                The SDSU Blog on ArgusLeader.com.

According to commissioner Tom Douple, Mid-Continent Conference officials will visit Sioux Falls on May 31 and June 1 in regard to the city’s bid to host the league’s 2009 and 2019 men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.

South Dakota State athletic director Fred Oien said that the conference – set to relaunch as The Summit League on June 1 – received bids from three cities. He wouldn’t disclose the other two, but the Tulsa (Okla.) Sports Commission confirmed that it put in a bid.

Douple said that the list of candidates will be trimmed to two likely by the end of this week, and that Sioux Falls is the only one that will get a site visit because the league is already familiar with the other options.

The tournament host should be finalized at the league’s June 25 presidents meeting.

“It’s awesome. It’s really serious,” Oien said. “Obviously Sioux Falls has presented a great proposal to attract their interest. I know that everybody will put their best foot forward for the site visit.”

Apparently Fargo wasn't the other city to put in a bid. The tourney dates have been reserved by the Red River Valley Sportmen's Show(a major Fargodome event) for the past three years. It sounds like Summit tourney dates will be taken into account in the future planning of the RRV SS.

Yep. At least they have been for a number of years.

Bring Douple out to Ribfest next weekend (I believe he will be in Sioux Falls June 1st and 2nd). We'll show him a good time. I would love to attend The Summit League tourney in Sioux Falls.

A set of six representatives from the Summit League - no longer the Mid-Continent Conference as of today - began arriving in Sioux Falls on Wednesday to take a closer look at the city, one of two finalists to host its men's and women's basketball tournaments in 2009 and 2010.

It's a sight visit as much as a site visit.

"They're going to look (the city) in the eyes," South Dakota State athletic director Fred Oien said, "and see if the commitment is there from corporate sponsorship and the kind of things that really make a tournament feasible to host."

The tour, hosted by the bidding parties, the Sioux Falls Sports Authority and Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau, formally kicked off Thursday evening with some wining and dining at Minnehaha Country Club, replete with remarks from Gov. Mike Rounds. . . . (read more)
