  • Re: UMKC to the WAC?

    Ok Question:

Why is it assumed it would be NDSU and SDSU IF there was a MVC invite?

Why not USD, UNO, and SDSU? Wouldn't those 3 be better located for the rest of the MVC schools. Or would the MVC schools want to take the stronger programs regardless of distance?

Always thought the 190miles north of Brookings could one day hurt us if conferences are looking at it that way. Maybe with the airplanes and budgets these days it doesn't matter.

I think the general thought is, that SDSU and NDSU are the most "ready" to move up to that conference. USD and UNO are behind aways financially.

So UMKC informed the SL yesterday they were leaving, and then leaked it out this morning to the media, or perhaps a member of the WAC or SL leaked it out. I have no problem with that. However, now they will not offer any more comments until February 14th? What a ****ty administration! They should have been prepared to hold a press conference this evening or tomorrow. How can it take 7 days?

        Good riddance!

          different theories.

          1. they had no plans to make it public until next week
          2. they expect other decisions conference balls to be dropped and don't want to go public until those fall
          3. and is my guess..... they weren't prepared and figured who cares, lets wait

Probably number 3. And they are probably right, no one in KC gives a crap.

              Very true.

UMKC is a distant #4 in the KC media market, and that's arguable, as Rockhurst (D-II) quite possibly has a stronger following here. (Kansas #1, Missouri #2, Kansas State #3, in general).

UMKC athletics are, in a word, pathetic.

If all that happens is a Denver-for-UMKC swap in Summit League membership, then the SL comes away from this a clear winner.

                But then there is Denver?

They(UMKC) picked a good day to announce. It is a second page story to Nate having career day at Ft Wayne. UMKC would have picked the Great West first, but that league has already dissolved.

I don't think UMKCs move made ESPN yet.

It could happen, I don't know. I don't know anyone in the AD's office. I'd guess that if the MVC had been on campus that something would have leaked but that is just a guess. Seems Brookings is too small for something that is perceived to be a done deal not to become public. I'd rather the XDSU's be big fish in a small pond and try to make the Summit a better conference and build it around them, however the MVC (depending on what happens to them), does appear quite attractive.
Holy crap...is it 2002 again and we're contemplating a move to D1?? The MV has programs that are our peers or at the very least what we should strive for. USD and SF tourney be damned. Where there's smoke there's fire...damn near every time and we all know it.

                          4. They are courting another school to join them in the WAC and they think they'll have a better chance if they wait until the 14th and send a giant "Be My Valentine" card with the request.

They know tomorrow people will actually look to see who is in the WAC - and really would you want to answer questions about that?

After looking briefly at the MVC fan forum, it seems that they value geography and basketball first schools. They don't believe the XDSU's would offer much of anything except bigger travel costs. It would be interesting to know what the presidents and AD's thought about NDSU/SDSU, as they are the decision makers. Would the Valley football playing schools have enough clout to bring us in if NDSU/SDSU/USD had to join Big Sky for a conference if the Summit collapses? Would the Valley football teams really care enough to lobby? It would weaken the football conference and potentially jeopardize the MVFC auto. Is anyone in the Valley other than Creighton being looked at by other conferences? if they lose a couple of non FB schools, I think the voting block would favor us. How would Western Illinois fit into all of this? Too many questions, no answers.

Nevertheless, I'm leaning towards zooropa's explanation, it makes the most sense. But there's a lot of ????'s with all this. I saw on bisonville that Oakland has removed the Summit logo from their court. Not sure if they were joking on that.
