    Re: Women's Basketball

Disappointing loss, no Jackrabbit could score for nearly 10 min in the 2nd half!!! I hope we beat them up there.

North Dakota State 76, South Dakota State 67
Brookings, S.D. -- North Dakota State dominated the last 19 minutes as the Bison rallied from a double-digit deficit to defeat South Dakota State 76-67 in at Frost Arena.

SDSU built a 26-13 in the first ten minutes and led 37-31 at
halftime. The Jacks opened a 43-31 lead when Shannon Schlagel hit a pair of three-pointers in the opening minute of the second half.

Angie Froehlickh led a Bison comeback which included a 12-0 run when SDSU was held scoreless from 13:28 to 8:35. By the time Heather Sieler scored for SDSU, the Bison were ahead 57-50.

Froehlich hit 11-of-14 field goal attempts and finished with 23 points to lead the Bison while Michelle Fricke added 19 and Katie Lorenz, who was 8-for-10 at the foul line, had 12.

Shannon Schlagel had a double-double by halftime (14 pts, 10 reb.) and finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Jacks.

Megan Vogel added 17 points and seven rebounds.

Turnovers were a big factor in this one. SDSU had 28 with NDSU scoring 35 points off SDSU mistakes. NDSU had 19 turnovers.

NDSU hit 14-of-22 field goal attempts in the second half, 63.6 per cent, to finish the game at 46.7 per cent (28x60). And after SDSU had a 30-15 rebounding advantage at halftime, NDSU won the battle of the boards 19-10 in the second-half.

SDSU shot just 37.9 per cent (22x58) for the game.

Just read where Stacy Schooley, a former Jackrabbit and now the point guard for the lady Coyotes, suffered a knee injury and will not play this weekend on their Minnesota road trip. The article also mentioned that based on the MRI results (to be received by 2/12) she may not be back at all. That is sad news for her and for her team.

While I hate to see anyone get hurt I can't help thinking from a Basketball perspective what Mandy and Stacy gave up to go to USD. While they have improved the program at USD they could have been part of SDSU's National Championship last year and quest this year for a repeat.

Jacks earn tie for conference lead

Schlagel scores 20 for SDSU women

FARGO - Eighth-ranked South Dakota State rallied from a 19-point deficit to beat No. 7 North Dakota State 71-66 in North Central Conference women's basketball Friday.

Shannon Schlagel scored 20 points Friday to lead the Jackrabbits.

The win pulled the defending national champion Jackrabbits into a first-place North Central Conference tie with North Dakota State, and denied Bison coach Amy Ruley her 600th career victory.

Brenda Davis added 13 points for SDSU (18-4, 7-2 NCC), and Megan Vogel pulled down 9 rebounds.

North Dakota State (18-4, 7-2) was led by Katie Lorenz with 17 points and Angie Froehlich with 16.

NDSU led 37-29 at halftime and was up 53-34 with 15:14 remaining before SDSU began its comeback.

The Bison still led 60-53 with 5:26 left, but the Jacks took the lead behind a 9-0 run that was keyed by two Schlagel lay-ins.

                  Go Jacks!

                    Re: Women's Basketball

Jacks women must have went south on the interstate instead of north, they didn't show up in Grand Forks. A lot of that has to do with UND, clearly a better team tonight.

Tough SCSU team on Friday. Hopefully AJ can get their heads screwed back on straight and the homecourt and home fans can push them past the Huskies. We need a sweep in Brookings and at least a split the next weekend if we want any chance at hosting the NCC tourney. We will need a lot of help from the others in the NCC and some big upsets over UND/NDSU.

It would also be nice to snag a higher seed for the regional so we don't have to face a tough NCC team in the 1st round. I'd much rather play one of the RMAC or NSIC teams rather than SCSU or USD.

                      Re: Women's Basketball

Had a chance to attend this game and was the worst performance I witnessed by the Jacks this year. They didn't play smart were out husseled and played like they were content to get the split in North Dakota. I have never seen so many unforced errors out of this team. I still think Vogel is one of the top players in the NCC but she sure didn't play like it.. Brutal game to watch in person and imagine it was the same to listen to on the radio. They now have moved back into a logjam and NDSU has the upper hand. Jacks may have the better schedule down the stretch.

Coyotes take on NDSU, Jackrabbits face Kearney

The time to start talking about another national championship has arrived for South Dakota State.

The defending Division II champion Jackrabbits and the University of South Dakota Coyotes begin NCAA North Central Regional women's basketball action today in St. Paul. The Coyotes are the No. 6 seed and will play No. 3 seed North Dakota State at 1 p.m. SDSU, the No. 4 seed, opens with fifth-seeded Nebraska-Kearney at 6 p.m.

SDSU (23-6) won the past two North Central Region titles, earning back-to-back Elite Eight appearances. However, SDSU coach Aaron Johnston won't let his players dwell on past achievements.

"I don't think we necessarily talk about repeating," said Johnston, the 2003 Molten/ Women's Division II Bulletin Coach of the Year. "We've talked about what happened last year and put that out of the equation for right now. We talk about this team competing for a national championship, but not by following a formula from last year or a game plan from last year." . . .

. . .The bracket is set up for a potential repeat of last year's regional final, when the Jackrabbits defeated the Coyotes 87-63 in Brookings to move on to the Elite Eight. But each will have to win twice to set up one last matchup before SDSU heads to Division I next year.

"None of these games are easy," Lavin said. "They're all great teams."

                        Good Luck Jacks! ;D

                        Go State!
