Don't worry about me BlueHatMan. You know we'll be there. (And then off for the Bahamas on Monday, to cheer the Jacks against Virginia and etal! 8-)

How many times will State have to beat them before those announcers realize that maybe State is just the better team.
When will you be eligible for the Field of 64?
Who is considered the team to beat for women's basketball in the midcon? How does State stack up with them? Without really knowing who it is, I have to think that State will stack up pretty favorably. You could be looking at some automatic berths in the near future.

If we can play with the Tennessee Lady Vols, we will have arrived.

I've seen Tennessee in person this year when they blew out Carson-Newman in their first exhibition game. They are big, they are fast, they are athletic, like nothing most SDSU women's basketball fans have seen. It would take an enormous effort for the Jackrabbits to beat the Lady Vols.

I hope we'll get the chance to see the Rabbits take on Tennessee one of these years.

Until then, we need to take care of business against USC and see what happens from there.

Meanwhile, Oral Roberts is supposedly the team to beat in the Mid-Con this year. Last year, Western Illinois won the conference with an RPI very comparable to SDSU's, but they lost their stud player and are looking at being down this year.

SDSU, if we maintain our current level, should immediately compete for the Mid-Con title and a berth in the women's Big Dance (and, quite possibly, that matchup with the Lady Vols).

SDSU downs Blue Raiders in opener
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — South Dakota State scored its final 13 points at the free throw line as the Jackrabbit women's basketball team opened the 2006-07 season Monday night with a 72-61 victory at Middle Tennessee State.

SDSU, which had its scheduled season opener at Kent State (Ohio) postponed on Saturday due to travel difficulties, won its 14th consecutive season-opening game since a 74-72 setback to Moorhead State (Minn.) to start the 1992-93 season.

The Jackrabbits converted 22-of-27 free throw attempts in the second half, 81.5 percent, including 13-of-14 in the final three minutes, 18 seconds. Andrea Verdegan and Megan Vogel each went 6-for-6 and Stacie Oistad made 1-of-2 tries. For the game, SDSU made 24-of-30 attempts at the line, 80 percent.

Middle Tennesee State grabbed an early five-point lead at 12-7, but SDSU responded with a 12-0 run, including two baskets by freshman Abby Kratovil, to go up 19-12.

The Blue Raiders, who forced SDSU into 13 first-half turnovers and 24 for the game, crawled back to take a momentary two-point lead before Megan Vogel hit her second three-pointer of the half to put the Jackrabbits ahead 27-26 at halftime.

In the second half, the game remained close until the Jackrabbits took control in the final five minutes. MTSU grabbed its last lead of the game, 46-44, at the 8:28 mark on a three-pointer by Chesia Lymon, only to see that lead evaporate as Oistad buried a three of her own.

With the game tied at 54-all, the Jackrabbits went on a 6-0 run over the next two minues to go ahead for good and lead to the free-throw shooting contest down the stretch.

Vogel led all scorers with 23 points and shared team-high honors with seven rebounds. Verdegan scored all 11 of her points at the line, while adding five assists and seven rebounds as SDSU held a 37-29 rebounding advantage. Oistad contributed 10 points off the bench.

A great start to another season. Congratulations, and looking forward to the rest of the season!

I noticed that AJ stated after the game that he wanted the team to be more focused on each game. He felt that the team would kind of let down after a big win last season. They would also get on themselves too much after a tough loss. He wants this team to be more even keeled. Good luck this Friday against USC.

Lady Raiders shocked by South Dakota State
                    By MONTE HALE JR.
                    hale@dnj.com

There was no sugarcoating MTSU's 72-61 home loss to South Dakota State Monday night at Murphy Center.

"They came out, it was their first game and they stuck it to us," said second-year MTSU coach Rick Insell.

After playing No. 1 ranked Maryland to within four points Friday night and garnering 12 votes in the Top 25 poll Monday, MTSU did indeed get a dose of reality.

"They came in here and kicked our butts," said MTSU senior guard Chrissy Givens. "We took Maryland to four points and maybe we thought we were too good, but they kicked our butts. They did it here two years ago."

MTSU struggled offensively throughout, but tied the score at 52-52 with 6:52 left when Givens scored and converted a 3-point play.

However, MTSU was outscored 20-9 down the stretch as it was unable to run its half-court offense.

"They got in us," said MTSU freshman point guard Chelsia Lymon. "They were overplaying and they did a great job. They just got in us. We struggled running our offense and we didn't rebound."

MTSU shot only 32 percent from the field, while the Jackrabbits shot 56 percent and outrebounded the Blue Raiders 37-29.

"You can't shoot 30 percent and get outrebounded and win," Insell said. "It's a marathon and we've got a lot of work to do. South Dakota State is a good team and they did a great job.

"We didn't have good offensive spacing and I thought that was a problem against Maryland. You get that when you play a lot of people and that's where we're at right now."

MTSU was led by junior Amber Holt's 19 points, while Givens had 17. However, the duo combined to go just 12-of-41 from the field.

"We've got to shoot the ball better," Insell said. "We have two people that go 7-for-20 and 5-for 21. I know we're a much better shooting team."

South Dakota State hit 17-of-20 free throws after getting into the 1-and-1 with 10:39 left in the game. The Jackrabbits also hit 8-of-14 from behind the 3-point arc.

"There was no pressure for us to win this game," said SDSU coach Aaron Johnston. "We tried a basic offense. We kept it simple and told the kids about being strong and trying to drive.

Now, if we can get the average SDSU and South Dakota sports fan to understand that we gain even more. I really enjoyed listening to the game last night. Very impressed with the maturity of this young team. Vogel is a great leader. FT shooting and rebounding effort was impressive. 3-point shooting is a huge factor in the women's game and I think this team can play with almost anybody when they shoot well from beyond the arc.

                        Great win!!

I'm not sure if Bluehatman is even aware of it, but back in the D-II days, we hosted an NCAA regional tournament that included Northern Michigan. They had a kid down at the end of their bench whose first name (at least, how I recall it) was Jerry. They were playing somebody else in the first round of the regional---maybe UND??? and the game was out of hand, and Jerry hadn't gotten into the game.

The SDSU student section began chanting for Jerry to get into the game. The Northern Michigan coach finally got up, sent Jerry to the table, then turned and waved to the SDSU crowd, which, of course, went wild.

                            Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!

This is bordering on smack and is more about men's basketball but if you are going to talk about chants for a player you can't go without mentioning Darwin Claussen or Keith Hasselquist. Those of you that attended a bball game against Augie in the mid 80's knows what I am talking about.
