I was looking on ESPN for any thing about the jacks and I found this:
weagro1 (3/13/2007 at 10:50 AM)
How come there is no coverage about South Dakota State in this WNIT field? I know that the WNIT takes a back seat to the NCAA tournament, but the Jacks are making history and nobody knows about it. This is the FIRST team in history to ever be invited to the WNIT while transitioning from Div. II to Div. I athletics. Simply put, its never been done! Not only that, but they have earned a first round bye and a home game in the second round. I think this team deserves some coverage as their 23-5 record, including 12 straight victories to close the year would indicate. Over the course of the season, the Jacks defeated the likes of Minnesota, USC, Virginia, and Middle Tennessee State, a team that was given a 5 seed in the Women's NCAA Tournament. Can this team get a little love here?!?!
Congratulations, Jacks. Very well done. Now the burden is on us fans to fill Frost to the rafters on Saturday night. I think we can do it. This is a big deal, a historic moment. (Though in a couple more years, the Jacks well be setting their sights even higher than the WNIT.) This team has been great fun to follow. Let's keep the season rolling.
BROOKINGS - By 10 a.m. today, South Dakota State coach Aaron Johnston should have three game tapes of potential second-round opponents Illinois State and Rice in hand, and it will be business as usual - sort of - for the first transition team to earn a bid to the WNIT.
But Tuesday was different, and the Jackrabbits weren't about to pretend otherwise. Following a brief morning meeting, the players - many low on sleep and high on adrenaline because of Monday night's postseason invitation - were sent off to enjoy the excitement created by their accomplishment.
"It's just an experience for all of us," said sophomore forward Jen Warkenthien, one of 10 underclassmen and five South Dakotans on the state's first team to qualify for an NCAA Division I postseason tournament. "We want to use the emotion and the excitement we have toward our game, toward getting a win; embrace it."
SDSU (23-5) did not have practice, giving players a chance to deal with a glut of media requests, phone calls, text messages and ticket requests. Senior Megan Vogel attempted to take a morning nap, but her cell phone kept ringing so she eventually gave up and headed to Frost Arena for a shootaround. It was a light and successful workout. The electronic display on the rebounding machine said she made 13 of 19 3-point tries.
Meanwhile, freshman center Laura Nielsen and sophomore guard Ashlea Muckenhirn battled the elliptical machines near the crowded box office. Tickets went on sale to the general public at 1 p.m., even before the date or time for the Jacks' first game - 7 p.m. Saturday - had been established.
Less than four hours later, all 2,100 reserved seats had been sold.
The hype, huddled athletic department employees decided, surpassed even the anticipation for the 2003 North Central Regional, for which SDSU was host en route to winning the Division II national title.
"It's a neat day," Johnston said. "A lot of people in the state of South Dakota and the region are excited about this. I don't think you have to be an SDSU fan to feel a little excitement about what the team is going to do." . . . (read more)
Well I did some fact finding about the WNIT from the last two years and here is what I found.
For 2006:
Out of the total 41 games played, the home team won 36 times. The team that won last years WNIT was Kansas St. and they hosted every game at home and of course won every game. The second place team, Marquette, hosted every game at home, except the championship game and they won every game at home and lost the only road game they played. Prior to the WNIT, Kansas St,was ranked No. 54 in the NCAA RPI and Marquette was ranked No. 57.
For 2005:
Out of the total 31 games played, the home team won 25 times. The team that won the 2005 WNIT was Southwest Missouri St. (I think this is now Missouri St.) and they hosted every game at home and won every game. The second place team, West Virginia, played two games on the road and lost the championship game on the road. I could not find the NCAA RPI rankings for 2005.
In summary, it is very important to play games at home and teams with RPI's in the mid-50's don't always make it to the NCAA tourney, but are very successful in the WNIT.
Go State!!! 8-) 8-) 8-)
Well I did some more research on attendance for the WNIT for the 2005-2006 season. Last year the WNIT had 40 schools in the tourney and this year they will have 48 teams. Of the 40 teams last year, only 16 teams played in round one. Here is a summary of the attendance for those games.
Round One
The worst attended game was Jackson St. @ Rice, with 328 attendance.
The most attended game was UC Santa Barbara @ Fresno ST. with 1820 attending.
The average attendance for the eight games was 935 for Round One.
Round Two
This round consisted of 16 games
The worst attended game was Illinois @ Marquette, with 609 attendance
The most attended game was Idaho St. @ Kansas St. with 3,775 attendance
The average attendance for these 16 games was 1,676 for Round Two.
5 of the 16 games had less than 1,000 attendance.
11 of the 16 games had less than 2,000 attendance
All but one game had less than 3,000 attendance
Round Three
This round consisted of 8 games
The worst attended game was Xavier @ Villinova, with 423 attendance
The most attended game was Fresno St. @ Kansas St. with 4,794 attendance
The average attendance for these 8 games was 2,795 for Round Three.
1 of the 16 games had less than 1,000 attendance
4 of the 16 games had less than 2,000 attendance
Only 3 games had more than 4,000 attendance
Round Four
This round had 4 games
The worst attendance was Western Kentucky @ Villinova with 423 attendance
Next was Virginia @ Pittsburgh with 1,504 attendance
Next was Indiana @ Marquette with 1,943 attendance
The most attended game was Nebraska @ Kansas St. (Big 12 game) 6,258 attendance.
Round Five
This round had 2 games
Pittsburgh @ Marquette 2,307 attendance
Western Kentucky @ Kansas St. 7,538 attendance
Championship Game
Marquette @ Kansas St. 13,340 attendance. Kansas St. won the WNIT by the score of 77 to 65.
Interestingly enough, Kansas St. had the highest average attendance with 7,141. The next highest attended home team was Wyoming with an average attendance of 3,523 per contest. Wyoming had two home games for the WNIT.
Based upon this I would think that SDSU has a very good chance of hosting at least one WNIT contest, with a high probability that SDSU could host games as long as the women continue to win in the WNIT. Of course the women need to continue winning the games left on their schedule and they have to get an invite to the WNIT.
Good Luck to the women's team tonight!!
Go State!!! 8-) 8-) 8-)
This set of information by NorCalJack emphasizes the importance to the WNIT committee in selecting who hosts games. In not one single instance did the lower attended game winner host the next round. Blowing the socks off the attendance figures, and winning should keep us hosting. Getting the Missouri game (assumes Jacks win twice) at Brookings will help in our revenge against the only team in our bracket that we lost to this season. Otherwise, we would not see any other team that we've played this year until possibly the championship game.
What would look super cool is if everybody sitting on the student's side wore yellow and everyone on the reserved side wore blue....either way I believe the women of Illinois St/Rice are in for a rude awakening. Is it Sat night yet

While we are still just about 4 days out wanted to throw this out there so you can plan accordingly.
Wear Yellow To The Game
That is all thanks.
Talking with a co-worker and one thing we just don't understand. Athletic Dept catch phrase: Go Big, Go Blue, Go Jacks. Yet let's encourage everyone to wear yellow. :-/

The alliteration with Go Big, Go yellow, Go Jacks! just isn't quite the same though is it?
