  • Re: 2013 Recruiting List

I am not sure that we will take our lumps over the next two seasons. I know that we are graduating the best player in the school's history (Wolters) and a very good player in Fiegen, but with our returning players, redshirts, and recruits I like the potential of the team. I also think that our roster is not set for next year. I would not be surprised if we have a player or two that do not return for next season. I think we need to still be recruiting a point guard and another big from the juco ranks or as a transfer. I am going to throw this name out there as a suggestion and I know some might not agree with me, but if I was the coaches I would recruit Cody Larson. I think both he and the team would benefit by him playing for us.

I talked to a friend of Cody Larson's recently, he didn't have any information or anything, but said he'd be shocked if he ever played for SDSU, and wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't play basketball again. (for what thats worth), and that is all I'm going to say on the matter.

As far as the team, they could be a dark contender next year. The conference will be tough to determine, Denver, NDSU, Oakland and Western Illinois would be the top tier teams, but IPFW is better then a 300+ RPI, IUPUI has been injury plagued, USD loses a key player but has a big transfer red-shirting this year and some young players, its pretty hard to get a reading on the rest of the conference. (Omaha is in 5th place this year) Its just a hard read on the team. I don't think they will be terrible, quite my guess is something in the 3-6 range in conference.

I keeping hearing WIU as a contender next year, but they lose Clark and Parks. They will be hard to replace. I think they will fall back to the bottom of the league. I would not be surprised if their coach left to be honest with you.

Wolters 36 Broman 42 on the 9th? Could that be a sign of the future? I sure hope so.

If, and its a big IF, Molinari stays, I think the style that they play will make them a contender, now probably not on the same level as a NDSU, Oakland, and (maybe) Denver, but they surprised quite a few people last year. I'd put SDSU and WIU in that kwazi second tear, where there are some ifs but they could contend as well.

They are a similar issue, good team over all but not much for depth, lose their 2 key guys. arguablly fiegen if one of our 3 most important players if not 2nd after nate. I dont know what they have for talent coming in but i know next year we have 3 key guys back and every thing else is a crap shoot. could surprise and contend maybe be a top 4 team in confrence, or we bomb if things dont click and are strugglin to compete. Heemstra will have to be huge for us next year. Horstman should get more minutes, not sure what to think of prince for next year. maybe we need his aggressiveness with nate gone but my guess he still doesnt fit into the style of play. Donlan and Devine will need to play some minutes do to my guess that heemstra will get himself into foul trouble plently. carlson and white will need to pick up the scoring and dykstra is going to have to figure out how to be the guy we expect him to be on this team.

This is off topic, but I remember Tyler mentioning it and when I was looking things up on their website I saw it again. They played Indiana at home? Does anyone know what the story was behind that?

There are old-timers who will tell you that Don Jacobson was the best basketball player SDSU has ever had. He played in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Lee Colburn came around in the early 1970s, and some thought he was the best ever. Then came Steve Brown, Steve Lingenfelter, Mark Tetzlaff, Austin Hansen and, now, Nate Walters. Along the way there have been other stars, too, like Dave Thomas and Chris White. The point is that SDSU has produced a lot of great players, and it looks like more of them are on the way. I'm not writing off next season. No way. I liked last year's recruits and the incoming class looks really good.

I think I will buy a pair of those rabbit glasses too. Otherwise it would make no sense to buy those season tickets. I have been through the transition years which made wonder why I stayed for the men's games so optimism is not a bad thing to possess. Those recruits are staying for the full 4 years more often and the program grows. Let's keep that home streak going into next year!

I dont think anyone is writing off the team, but their appears to be more questions then answers for the first time just to do we knew we were going to improve the last 5 years, really had good players coming in and developed good program, now we have questions who will step up as the leaders as the seniors, who will come off the bench, how many red shirt and incoming freshman will need to play or be effective if they are. We have a good core and a lot of talent, just not sure yet how it all fits toghether. I trust our coaching staff will figure that out.

The first couple of transition years, which included several embarassing losses, tested the loyalty of a lot of SDSU fans, myself included. It's much more fun to worry about the coming loss of a superstar due to graduation and whether the Jacks will be able to maintain a high level of success with a promising crop of recruits.

My Dad has seen almost every home basketball game at SDSU since the mid-1950s. He would tell you that Nate is the best player SDSU has ever had. That is not to take anything away from those amazing Jackrabbits of the past. Nate is just at another level.

I think the game has changed so much over the last 70 years that to compare Nate Wolters to Sonny Schmidt, who did not score 1000 in his career is not a fair comparison. Sonny played right after WWII, when there were many more low scoring games and no behind the back passes and driving layups like we have seen from Nate Wolters. Even since the days of Don Jacobsen, the game has changed very much. The way the sport is run now its impossible to be a 3 sport athlete such as Wayne Rassmusen. There just is not time to fit another sport in. Heemstra BB and Baseball is an exception.

JJ, Dad is right, Nate is the best player to play for SDSU, but there are players on the way that will no doubt break all of Nates records. My gut tells me Broman has the best chance to do that. I could be very wrong. Will NBA scouts be watching? Who knows? They just might be.

I not one of those old timers, see my above post. I doubt they exist, in your mind only perhaps?. I do agree with your assertion that the past does contain legends of players who were greats in their times. Any old timer who has watched Nate, can only draw one conclusion, and that is he is the best to date.
