I just think that it makes for a bit of depth and keeps things interesting. I don't have anything against the 2013 recruits at all but I think with guys with different experiences bring different talents to the table and certainly gets the Jackrabbit brand known outside of SD. I would have also liked to see a bit more height in this recruiting class but I'll keep the faith and trust the coaches.
You recruit the best players regardless where they are from. I am actually glad the coaches, didn't look outside the state, just to look outside the state. Sometimes the better player is from SD and winning in the NCAA tournament is what will get the Jacks brand known outside of SD, more so then recruiting a kid from a different region.

Get the best players we can, and I don't care where they come from because once they get here it is all about South Dakota State. I do think we need lock down our boarders as best we can and should always try to keep the SD D-I talent at home if we can, but I'll say it again the most important thing is getting the best players we can.

Flatten, the 6-foot-5 guard from Clark/Willow Lake becomes the fourth (and final) member of the Jacks’ 2013 class and the sixth player to commit since the end of the 2011-12 season.

During his last summer even with the Schoolers, Flatten said that he was likely to wait until spring to make a decision, wanted to see what might happen with a big senior year. And he did pick up a subsequent offer from UTEP. But in the end he made only one visit: To SDSU. Why the change? He talked it over with his family – both of his parents played college ball at Huron – and decided to pull the trigger.

It probably didn’t hurt that SDSU had just one scholarship spot left in light of recent verbals from Pierre wing Lane Severyn, Alexandria (Minn.) forward Logan Doyle and Lakeview Christian Academy (Minn.) guard Anders Broman.

I'm one of those that I don't care if they are local or not, I think you have to be able to keep local recruits, but I don't believe in the local recruits should be given scholarships because they local. I don't think this is the case however. This is one of the more deeper South Dakota classes and Minnesota has a deep class as well. Compared to last year where it was very thin in the region, especially South Dakota. So I think its one of those where there wasn't much advantage in going outside the region. I just thought that being the first recruiting year after the dance that they would land an out of area recruit. But looking at them, they did pretty well staying pretty close to home.

I didn't explain it good enough. I meant to say that I don't care where they are from, but if you just don't recruit kids outside of South Dakota just because. You recruit the best kids no matter where they are from. There has been some stigma that South Dakota high school players aren't as good as other states because the competition is weaker, but that doesn't mean good players don't come out of the state. They did kind of get an out of area recruit, just in the 2012 class, and the 2013 class was very very good in South Dakota.

It's going to be fun keeping tabs on the progress of this 2013 class as they move through their senior season. The sure look good on paper and the fact that they are already on-board so early is amazing.

How about another NCAA tournament run this year to help make the 2014 and 2015 recruiting go just as smoothly.

Actually Skippy, isn't this the moment we have been waiting for? We have a couple of kids that may have garnered what some would call better offers, and we got them to commit and stay in-state. How long have we been frustrated with kids that we thought were chasing the better offer and not giving SDSU a chance? I'm happy we have them, maybe they will or won't pan out but we finally got them to look at us.....maybe this will start a trend of the upper echelon instate kids giving us a serious look.

With only two seniors on the team this year, where do the four scholarships for next year come from? Do we have some open scholarships for this year?

You can have 13 scholarship players on your roster.

Assuming that Tony and Nate don't red shirt (and graduate) and everyone on the team stays and the 4 verbals sign you will have

                      Matt Donlan
                      Jake Bittle
                      Connor Devine
                      Taevaunn Prince
                      Zach Horstman
                      Braydon Carlson
                      Chad White
                      Jordan Dykstra
                      Marcus Heemstra

                      Logan Doyle
                      Anders Browman
                      Layne Severyn
                      Skyler Flatten

I overlooked Monaghan and Francis departures.

The signing period for Mens Basketball opens on Wednesday - do we know if all our verbals will be signing immediately?

Generally, if you verbal before the early signing period, you sign during the early signing period. If they don't sign, that usually means they are having second thoughts about their commitment and reopen their recruiting.

So, basically I expect all of them to sign on Wednesday(ish).

Any chance we would get some walkons or are we maxed getting 4 scholarship guys? Does that max out the scholarsips for the time being?
