The situation at UMKC is interesting, and I think it should serve as a cautionary tale for people who were calling for Scott Nagy's head this year. The story is pretty well known: a couple of years ago UMKC had a new AD come in (Tim Hall), who fired the men's BB coach (Rich Zvosec) within the first month, and the subsequent hire of Matt Brown has turned into a disaster that the program may not recover from.

Oakland's Greg Kampe and other Summit coaches have been very public in praising Nagy as a coach. How much praise have Kampe or other Summit coaches given Brown? Zip. Keep Nagy, at the very least through the end of next year. The program is on the right track. Of course, UMKC also seemed to be headed in the right direction when Zvosec was fired to make way for the guy who would take the program to the "next level".....

This is very interesting, and probably 90 percent of the fan base at SDSU want Nagy to stay and I will be surprised if a coaching change is made. To get a better coach, we need to spend more in terms of salary and offer multi-year contracts which do not happen under SD law currently for any state employee period. Yup we are backwards on a few things. I dont see a coaching change as a priority in terms of our current budget, but not an insider by any means. I been surprised before, but dont think so in terms of coaching changes.
Our coaches could leave for some other opportunity, and that is likely to happen before a firing.

I do agree that Molenari at WIU could change things for the rest of the Summit. Anyone that helped Ray Meyer build a good program at DePaul in the mid 1980's has got to know what they are doing. Also SUU has another veteran coach, so I don't see them going backwards either.

The lack of a big man in the middle (specifically defense, as AC has been very solid inside on O) was definitely a problem this year.

Having said that, I'm looking very forward to next year, assuming Davis will play, also, wondering if we'll use that last scholly on a big man....don't know.

I'm hoping Grif Callahan performs a little better next year, Gar Callahan will be solid, Sargent will be solid, Kai will be solid.

Also looking forward to seeing James Rader, Fiegen/White, and the various other guys we've got coming in/moving up on the bench.

Here is a case for red-shirting Fiegen, White and Carlson:
1. Unless you think they can help you win the Summitt outright next year, copy the Bison and make these three the base of a five-year plan in which Jacks should be competitive throughout, and potentially dominant in the out years of this class, provided the Jacks get more help in the post. As stated earlier, expectations already are that the Jacks will be in the fight at the top half of the Summit with what they have coming back, and especially if Davis, Rader and Cassady and Engen in his last year step in to contribute.

2. If Davis can't play, none of the freshmen fill the role he would fill, anyway. So go heavily after a JC big man who can help you right away. Someone that can play for two years, and be there the following year when Cordova, Sargent, Griffin C and Moss are seniors, and next year's class is in its RS freshman year. That would have the potential to be a VERY good team right off the bat.

A stronger presence inside would have turned a 13-win team into a 17-win team this year, given all the games that got away with late rebounding deficiencies that led to the other guys getting second and third shots in the closing seconds. .

1) I don't know how far SDSU is behind in their coaching salary. They are behind in all other jobs so I'm sure it's a ways but the cost of living is probably cheaper here, too.
2) I don't know who the new AD will be but look at how SDSU runs things. They gave coach Nagy several years to turn it around. I think if you're a new coach here, you'll have at least 5 years to turn it around. That way you have your own recruits in the whole system(even if they redshirt).

Oakland will be better. They get Nelson back who many thought could be the POTY in the Summit this year and they get StJ transfer Larry Wright. Nelson (6'5 225) averaged 17 ppg and 7 rpg two years ago. Wright (6'2) scored 9 ppg in just 19 minutes per game at St. Johns.

Unless the rules are changes to allow multiple-year contracts then it is going to be imperative that we have an AD that doesn't burn through coaches. Dr. Oien proved to be very patient over the years and things have worked out very well overall. Going a different direction could be disasterous. If the new AD came in and made a change now it would severely handicap the university in finding a solid candidate. Even if you are one of the people that would just assume see a change, now would be a horrible time to do it.

I don't think I am out in left field when I think that the search committee is most likely looking for candidates that can build on what exists at SDSU. Any candidate that comes promising Pie in the sky will be quickly eliminated from the pool of candidates. I would be totally surprised if adminstration was looking for a miracle worker in the newly hired AD.

I don't think the fair-weather element of the Jacks' fan base (which is large and tired of losing) would be very supportive of another multi-year build-up plan. The Jack men have reached the point where they'd better put everything they've got into winning now, or at least not going down without a heck of a fight. Davis might be the key. Go, Jacks.

You are right on.Coach Nagy in his radio interview after the last regular season game said one of the biggest problems was that players were worn out both mentally and physically from playing too many minutes.So,I don't think red-shirting will be an option.

I think you're right. I think Davis is a huge part of how next year shapes out. We'll see. I also agree that if anyone can help next year they need to play. Someone brought up NDSU and the 4 redshirt seniors. With all due respect, that was 5 years ago hen NDSU was just starting the transition and could afford to take a bullet. We're not in the same position. We have a coaching staff that knows they need to start winning and a fanabase that needs a jumpstart. I'lll take the lost year of eligibility for a winning season and even a shot at March Madness.

At this point, looking at Oakland compared to the rest of the conference, I hope they just dominate and even make a run at recieving votes (that's a tall order for a Summit team, I know). It's obvious that, on paper, they are the frontrunner...by a comfortable margin. A great roster, experience, nice size, a great floor leader coming back, two upper classmen players joining the team and a coach who has been there forever.

Nagy has also said he wants to build the program the right way, by red-shirting his freshman. I hope he follows this plan.
