    Re: NDSU Game Thread

Woodside and Winkelman are impressive, it can be very easy for anyone (especially their teammates) to stand there and just watch them go. I am not about to predict the demise of NDSU basketball as no one knows what they have coming in and no one knows of who is likely to step up once they are out from under the shadow of the big 2. But they do have some gigantic shoes to fill.

I do like where our team is going. I don't know how you blame Nagy for players missing the front end of consecutive one and one's with under 1 minute on the clock. I don't know how you can blame Nagy for not putting AC in with 10 seconds left (he still could be fouled and give them the ball with 7 seconds and even or down 1 and no one wants to see what Woodside could do in that situation other than NDSU fans). I can understand questioning not calling timeout after the two free throws but in the end you have to be able to trust that Kai and Garrett can get things done there. We all expected them to, why shouldn't Nagy?

I was really disappointed in the result last night. I even wore my lucky Gruber Law Office basketball shirt under my sweatshirt hoping to bring the guys luck.

By the way two of the guys sitting in the reserved seats in the front row and the two kids with the wood side poster are the type of people that give Bison fans a bad name. I am all for standing up and rooting for your team and yelling and screaming when things are going right but their kind of crap makes me sick. I especially loved that no on paid attention to the two kids with the woodside poster but the 10 8 year olds standing behind them.

And from now on every time I see Justin Engalls I am likely to throw up in my mouth a bit. That guy is a walking disaster as a ref.

SDSU won't have a bench next year!
Um... you realize we graduate two guys, one who played about 30 seconds last night, and another who didn't play, right? So we'll have the same bench next year... plus a few new guys. Meanwhile, NDSU doesn't just lose four awesome players (and nobody would argue they're anything other than great). You lose about 90 percent of your scoring and rebounding. Let's see: You lose 90 percent of your scoring and rebounding. We lost... 0 percent. Thus, your post makes absolutely no sense at all.

Let's review a bit: Your bench scored six points last night and added 8 rebounds. Flowers is an athlete who has no apparent offensive game. Vaughn played 19 minutes and managed 2 points. I don't even recall seeing Carlson in the game, but he played 10 minutes (and people over at Bisonville think he's part of the answer for next year?) Sussenguth? Can we all agree he's a total bust?

Meanwhile, Wink and Woody scored 59 of your 87 points. Do you even have any other point guards on your team? Woody played all but one minute. Wink played all but two. Nelson had a poor game, but he's an amazing player, too. Despite the fact that they beat us again, it was honestly a pleasure to watch those guys play. They're just great.

Our bench wasn't super productive, either. But that's not the point. We won't be relying on those players to start next year. Why? We don't lose four starters. We lose zero starters. And we gain two freshmen who should contribute right away. And we hope to have our 6'10" center back from injury. And we have a 6'8" redshirt freshman who will contribute. We're going to be considerably deeper next year.

This is NDSU's year. Things are going to be different next year. Unless NDSU can unearth 59 points from a couple of Jucos NDSU is going to be down a lot next year.

I agree. They kind of went into a shell the last two minutes. They were aggressive and pushed the ball the second half, and then with a five point lead with two minutes left, it seemed they quit pushing the ball. I have said it before, they need to learn to win and not play not to lose. Nice crowd though, and it was good to see a good student section last night.

i think if we win our 4 home games, we should have a good chance. that gives us a 7-11 record. maybe win a couple on the road and be in better shape. lets start next week with 2 wins at home and go from there

Exactly the sort of 'kid brother' attitude that I've come to expect from some NDSU fans.

Our bench outplayed yours by any measure you'd care to put to it. You had no one that came off the bench with the impact Dale Moss had, and the stats all favor SDSU's bench as well. How that comes to mean that SDSU will have a worse bench next year (seeing how they didn't start a senior and you guys started four) completely escapes me.

I will readily grant that this is NDSU's year. You guys will be talking about Woodside, Winkelman, and Nelson for years, and rightfully so.

But please, oh, puhleeeeeze, spare us the assertion that NDSU is better than SDSU from top to bottom, as it plainly is not so.

    -----

As to the game itself, Nagy summed it up perfectly in the post game press conference: "They're not the steps we'd like to be taking. They're still, for us, steps in the right direction."

Regarding where the SDSU men's team is at, they're very very close. It was not a lack of talent that cost them the game tonight. It was not a lack of desire. It was a lack of poise.

SDSU did not play, over the last minute, like a team that was comfortable holding a 5 point lead on a good team. They played to lose, and they lost.

Good game tonight...I thought we had pulled it out up five with one minute to go. Woodside and Winkleman are incredible players, we had no answer for them. The rest of the Bison squad...not so much. I like our chances the next few years, but that doesn't take the sting away from tonight. We had another Summit victory in our hands and choked it away.

Crowd was pretty loud and active even though the overall numbers weren't as big as expected - it didn't seem like there were 3600+ there to me. Loved being told to sit down with a minute left in regulation from the old guys two or three rows behind me. [Sarcasm alert] I'm sure our players would want us to sit on our hands and not make some noise during the most important minute of the game. It will probably also help in recruiting the type of athletes we need if we can bring kids in to Frost to see a lethargic crowd that won't stand up and make noise when the team deserves it. [Sarcasm alert over] Good thing my son was with me, otherwise I probably would have opened my mouth and regreted something I said back to him.

Maybe he doesn't understand that SDSU will have 2 true freshman who should see considerable time next year...

As far as NDSU next year vs. SDSU's is that SDSU's will be more proven... Its hard to see how good they are when the seniors do so much on the team...

I didn't make friends with my first post over there, whoops. Just frustrated about the team, so I made a dumb comment, o well I think most posters over there are over it.

Just got back from the game. Great effort. NDSU has a very weak bench after the top four guys. We're going to hand them their rear ends next year. This year, though, and in particular at the end of this game, we saw some very savvy seniors from NDSU take over the game while our slightly less experienced team struggled a little at crunch time. It hurts us when Cordova sits for those last two minutes because of his poor foul shooting. For the three minutes before that, we were getting layups because they were so concerned about AC. When he was out, we were forcing it, and they were able to play us straight up. If AC can become a solid free throw shooter, it'll really make a difference having him in as a threat on the offensive end at the end of games.

Woodside is simply the best player in the league. And it's not close. Winkelman just makes shots. He's not pretty, but he's long and fairly fleet afoot for his size. We did a great job on Nelson, who killed us last year.

What can you say? NDSU has an experienced and savvy team. Our guys played well enough to beat them, but it just didn't happen.

Great crowd and great energy in Frost tonight, though. Felt like old times.

Back from the game. Good effort. Was worried they looked flat, but played with even emotions throughout the game which helped, but needed a bit more fire.

Need to get Kai involved more. MUST have Moss in during key stretches and the end. Good things happen when he's in.

Nagy wanted the screen for Garrett, not sure if it was for a 3 or drive, hope it was to take it inside because shooting 3's tonight was not the answer.

These guys can compete with anyone in the conference and should only get better. It's hard not to look to the future and get exited for the next 1-2 years. BUT, this team needs to finish the 2nd half strong and not give up. So far they haven't. This team is heads and tails better than 2-3 years ago.

Looking forward to being at the Oakland game with hopefully a chance at the 2nd win of the weekend.

Forgot to mention that AC was unbelievable, couldn't stop him. His Animal nickname seemed to fit.
